ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

The games to come after this will be horrendous, they're clearly done mentally. Not even confident they can beat Netherlands at the moment.

I didn't expect them to win this WC but it's alarming how it's fallen apart so badly. Moeen said yesterday 'If we're going out, we're going out with a bang' but there doesn't seem to be much evidence of that today.
They are being banged tbf

Aside from all of the obvious things, Root's performances at the start of an innings are a huge issue. He's usually the type of player who comes in and looks comfortable from ball one but he seems to be really struggling against the new ball in this format. Since the last WC he's batted 16 times in the first 10 overs and been dismissed in 9 of them at an average of 5.22! His SR in that period is also very low at 38.84.
Now 10 dismissals in 17 powerplay innings and the average is down to 5. Makes no difference now I guess but Stokes should bat 3 for the rest of the tournament.

There's an argument that we use potential next generation test players for ODIs. All players nowadays are used to limited over cricket and it's a lot better than having a bunch of over 30 year olds with nothing to prove and no interest out there.

The likes of Mahmood are massively undercooked (injuries aside) and could have been used for the last 4 years in ODIs. They will be needed soon anyway after the inevitable retirements.

220 or so might have made a decent target with these early wickets. A bit harsh to criticise Stokes maybe but his shot was unnecessary at that point, he still had plenty of time and competent batters with him. They could have just nudged it around for a while, get to 200 and then look to play a few shots.

Why isn't anyone interested in ODIs anymore?

It's the perfect compromise between the nonsense of T20/100 and the majesty of Test Match cricket.
Lack of interest. T20 and franchise cricket has taken over. Test will always be priority for many and t20 for others.

I hope 50 overs doesn't die because there is still enough interest.

can England go home after this?

Imagine having to stay there for another few weeks knowing youre probably getting tonked each match

I have tried to avoid commenting on this thinking that we would eventually turn it around, but Sri Lanka are not a good team and they're beating the dog out of us.

This whole tournament has been a joke and we have been absolutely pathetic.

Massively disillusioned and disappointed.

I agree, personally think the Coach should be sacked as its just not acceptable. While I think we have the players to move on after, I believe a better coach is needed.

I think he'll probably walk - which is lucky as the ECB would probably give him a second chance as we won the world T20 - but agree that this has been so badly planned and executed he should go.

Surely Buttler is sacked as a captain too after this?

Probably in time he'll also resign - but there's barely any rush with that as most of these guys wont play the next bilateral ODI series anyway

There's nobody obvious to take over from Buttler anyway. Curran might be next in-line if he nails down his place but that's no guarantee at the moment.

Mott has been unfortunate in terms of barely having anything close to a full squad to work with for any series. I don't think he'll be sacked but he'll be under pressure for the T20 World Cup next year. Probably has been slightly underwhelming overall though, I thought he'd make this team more ruthless but it's not really happened. At the time he looked the safe bet with McCullum the big risk, couldn't have been more wrong.

I said after the Afghanistan match that Mott will probably be safe because of the T20 WC win last year but I don't know now. The absolute state of this WC campaign might be enough on it's own to justify letting him go. And we've got at least 3 more hammerings yet to come.

That WC win last year looks more and more like a blip.

4 defeats out of 5 this World Cup and they've all been absolute batterings.

I look at the fixture list every week and go "hmm these 3-4 matches look good" and they all turn out to be one sided

I don't feel like as England fans we can have a totally objective view on this WC due to our own horrendous performance - but I'm trying my best and it still feels like a total bore? Add in the organisational chaos resulting in no visiting fans and some disappointing attendances...it's a bad look for 50 over cricket at a critical time.

What does everyone else reckon?

I still don't think there's been an exciting finish to any match yet and we're 25 matches deep into the tournament. I think it's been a dull tournament although granted I may be biased towards feeling negative about this WC due to the state of England.

I think South Africa are the one bit of excitement in the tournament so far. Afghanistan getting two big scalps too is good for the game. Slim pickings after that though.

Didn't realise the India match was on Sunday, should finish just in time for the United game :nervous:

I think it has been fine attendance wise. Even the crowd for Netherlands and Australia yesterday was pretty good. First week was a bit meh and since then the craze has picked up.

I may be in minority but I am not a fan of this format. Yes, all teams play each other but after a point most of the games become meangingless. I rather follow the 2003 or 1999 format where you have two groups and then super six and then semis and final. Gives a fair shot and point carry forward system would mean every game would be a bit fun.

England will beat India..
I don't think it's happening. England just look down and out. India needs to literally not show up to lose. I expect a better fight from england but India will eventually win the match.

If Lanka had Hasaranga and Chameera fit then they'd have been quite close to qualifying imo.

Looking forward to Kohli working out how to score a century when India are only chasing 112
