ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

England post 2015:

2016 T20 WC - finalists
2017 CT - semi finalists
2019 WC - winners
2021 T20 WC - semi finalists
2022 T20 WC - winners

Amazing era, shit tournament. No need to go mad.

Lack of interest. T20 and franchise cricket has taken over. Test will always be priority for many and t20 for others.

I hope 50 overs doesn't die because there is still enough interest.
Was listening to the Red Inker podcast and they were saying that this may be the last 50 WC. Apparently there are already moves to scrap the 2027 tournament.

Would be a shame but that's the way the game is going I guess.

Yeah. We may have won the '21 W20 as well had the tosses gone our way.

This is our Spain 2014 moment. The players have gone on one tournament too many, we've done no preparation and it seems we've got the captain and coach wrong. Nothing else to say really.

I don't feel like as England fans we can have a totally objective view on this WC due to our own horrendous performance - but I'm trying my best and it still feels like a total bore? Add in the organisational chaos resulting in no visiting fans and some disappointing attendances...it's a bad look for 50 over cricket at a critical time.

What does everyone else reckon?

My own issues aside with India as hosts aside…(https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/india-cricket-world-cup-sporting-world-must-challenge)

I have enjoyed it somewhat despite the lack of close games. It could just be because I genuinely love cricket or because some of my best memories growing up were in 50 ODI cricket. I’m glad there’s been some upsets - they always help.

I think having a long drawn out group stage is a bit silly. They could easily do 2 games a day. I also think the pitches being prepared in the way they have been is just pretty stupid.

It’s a competition I hope is kept on for the future although it probably needs some refreshment.

Moaning about the pitches is pretty weird. Pitches mostly have been pretty good. Like I said people like to moan for the sake of it. People were moaning here about the 2019 wc as well (of course non english supporters) for weather and some flat pitches. People would have moaned about the 15wc as well and same for 2011.

I think 50 overs can only entertain that much in the modern times. If you honestly ask me I still prefer matches where 250 odd is par and is defended. Find the 350 odd games boring and that's even though the Pak SL game should be highly talked about but yet no one even mentions that game.

I do agree there hasn't been any great games so far so for that I would say this has been a dull tournament. The most enjoyable games in this tournament for me so far have been

Eng Afg
Ind NZ
SA Netherlands
PAK afg

Rest have been meh

I don't like this format at all, there's effectively only three games where anything can happen.

The league-based round to semis insulates the big sides against the odd results by diluting the stakes. It's no secret which side this format benefits the most.

We get such predictability and one sided dominance in bilateral series all the time, what's the point of a World Cup when it's turned into a World League?

What can be said is that pitch quality cannot be used as an excuse for this England defeat. Bangalore is the flattest as humanely possible flat track in the world as SL showed in their chase. Hard to know what the root cause is though.

The pitches have been fine. The BCCI have mismanaged the tournament so much that it's a joke.

Apparently 2027 WC is a 14 team tournament with 2 groups of 7, which IMO is a much better format.

This format worked fine in 2019. That time likes of Bangladesh and Windies were competitive, with latter close to making semis if a couple of close matches went their way. Problem this time is you have 4 teams that may cause upsets but realistically have less than 1% chance of qualifying. So that has automatically led to and will continue to lead to a lot of matches with very less stakes. Then on top of it England collapsing this badly also means the last top 4 place is just going to come down to Oz or Pak.

If Saffers beat Pakistan today, then the top4 is more or less sealed with 19 matches still to go that's the problem.

Yup. For me if you want to lift the trophy, then win 3 knockouts in a row. Much better than this boring world league.

They should rename it the World League. Cups don’t have this kind of ridiculous group to knockout ratios.

I agree with the format being boring.. but 6 teams competing for 4 spots is fine.. and that is not counting SL who were on a long winning streak till the Asia cup. they wouldve been the dark horses to qualify

There have been enough upsets to make the fight for the qualification spots interesting.. Afg vs Pak / Afg and SL vs Eng / Ned vs SA..
The disappointing bit has been the top teams not putting up good fights against each other...

Hopefully the next few games are close(r).
Pak - SA / Aus - NZ / Eng - Ind / NZ - SA .. all in the next week ..

Pakistan just need to put up any sort of score here and then scrap for it. Can see them folding if they panic and go to hard.

This Indian team under Rohit/Kohli would have won all the ODI tournaments and World Test Championships if those were just a league, which is the intent.

That said, T20 WCs are also a joke with Australia winning one purely because they won all the tosses.

The main issue with cricket is the few competitive teams.

Funny how there was a discourse in last year or so how SA cricket seems to be dying and now they’ve four five absolute awesome talents coming through.

Plenty of support for Pakistan here. Visually looks like more than every other place they've played at so far.

Surprisingly pleasant to watch. It’s not that hot in the stands. Just the three stands which were on public sale are packed. Rest are about half full

Is anyone else hearing this fecking screaming voice during the broadcast?
