ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Sounds like we are dropping Woakes (not sure), Curran (thank god), and Livingstone (I'd have given another game).

Stokes (wooo), Atkinson (deserves a go) and Willey (FFS) come in.

I think it shows how Mott & Jos have been so confused with this squad. They picked Livingstone over brook in the first squad, then picked Brook over Roy in the final squad and now 3 games in they have picked Brook over Livingstone. The team picked 5000 all rounders in the squad and now suddenly gone to specialists. England have enough talent to win but there is a lack of direction

Agree with all of the above.

Any Aussies out there that can explain why both Smith & Labu-Shane gets picked? Is there a lack of other solid options out there? Has Matthew wade retired from ODI’s? I guess once Head is back, one of those 2 will drop out?

Is Babar Azam actually that good or really over rated?

outside of World Cup I don’t follow much of Pakistan cricket and he is hyped up at every World Cup, and he very rarely does something notable. And his captaincy is consistently horrid.
I would say he is a very good player but no way a Kohli or even Rohit. He is 29 and these are the tournaments you have to elevate yourself to be competing with the very best.
Its weird, because watching him in person yesterday he looked different class to the rest of his teammates even in the very short stay. It was the perfect opportunity and the platform was set for him to play a big innings.

Captaincy was pretty poor though, no doubt. Completely flat body language. He was looking elsewhere when the ball was being thrown to him between balls a few times. Fielders weren't paying attention to him when he wanted change in positions, i saw rizwan having to intervene several times. Just make Rizwan the captain.

In general, there was a night and day difference in the fielding professionalism between the two teams.

He averaged 70 in the previous WC and also top scored in the T20 WC a couple of years ago. Think he's just burnt out at this stage. Plays and captains all matches in all formats while expected to carry the batting lineup. Same kind of mismanagement and lack of rotation that also leads to Shaheen and Naseem constantly being injured.

He's a woeful captain though. Clueless in the field.

This has real disaster vibes all over it - has done for the whole WC so far (England)

England have the quality of player at the top of the order to chase a big total, but they don't have the depth. I've said it for a while now, England simply aren't producing good enough bowlers to accommodate their batting ability.

It does feel a bit of an end of an era for this crop.

Yep, the balance of the side is completely messed up. The last time England had a good balance to the team. This team just isn’t that and players are completely out of form. I dont expect them to qualify for the next round and a rebuild will be needed after the tournament.

Could get brutal here, expecting SA to make 350+ comfortably. This tournament has more of a 2015 feel to it for England, probably going to be a similar turnover of players after as well. I don't think Malan, Stokes, Moeen, Rashid, Willey or Woakes will play another ODI, possibly Wood also.

Looking ominous for England. SA will be dunking on us in both sports today.

England have been rubbish at bowling throughout the whole tournament but have particularly struggled during the middle overs. How they would give for a player like Plunkett like in the last tournament.

You made a similar comment a few pages ago. It was shite before and it’s shite now.

He should be banned from the dull WUM thing in here as this is a good thread for normal chat and he's perfectly capable of talking cricket.

People are overreacting on England's performance. The game is not even 25% done and writing off England as if they are some pub side.

Really good over topped off with a wicket by trusty Adil. I fancied Van der Dussen for a big one on here so we needed that, got to keep taking wickets on this.

It looks like it's been one tournament too far for this group of players.

They've been brilliant for England so can't criticise them too much , we've made the knockouts for every tournament since the big revolution after the 2015 WC. Not sure anyone else has matched that consistency.

Wicket though!

:wenger: The feck are you on about? I've only made one previous comment about England at this tournament and that was this:

Have to say England’s team balance is very odd. 4 seamers in India? Why is Woakes playing in these conditions?

Too many allrounders. Livingstone, Curran, Woakes. They’re all playing as either front line bowlers or batting in the top 6. You need to be an elite allrounder in the mould of Kallis, Watson, Stokes, Shakib etc. to manage that.

Malan, Bairstow, Root, Brook, Stokes, Buttler, Livingstone/Ali, Rashid, Willey, Wood, Topley.

Top 6 need to be your 6 best batsmen. 8-11 need to be your best bowlers.

Proper top 6 with a good allrounder at 7. 3 good seamers, 3 solid spin options. You don’t even need Stokes to bowl.

Willey is an underrated bowler. Excellent in the powerplay with his swing. Would be starting for most other teams.

Nah, we know as England fans. The bowling has been poor and continues to be and we don’t have the batting form to chase big totals. The only way would be to restrict SA to a decent total to chase but the game is getting away at the moment.

You are playing in Mumbai, one of the better batting tracks. Historically chasing here is easy. Unless SA score some crazy first innings score , I am backing england.

Yes plenty of time to go in this game and England could chase a big one on here - my bigger concern is our body language and general confusion in selection/plans.

WTF are you on about???? You made a similar comment about a title defence a few pages ago and you’ve made several comments on England not just the one above. Maybe cease with the WUM comments and stick to the cricket. Then we have your genius comments like this.

England 'won' a World Cup on boundary count. It's like the football WC final had stopped after extra time and the winner was decided on throw-in count.

We've seen this story with England before. Anything 320+ which let's be honest SA are going to canter to, I'm not sure we have the batting form to chase.

What happened to Topley? Any chance he comes back or are they counting on Atkinson to bowl 10?
