I get that. The thing about England at the moment though is I expect them to bat well. If they fall short it's with their bowling. I would find it hard to find someone to dominate their batting.

The only way they fall short batting is if several top quality batters under perform.
 
Would be good to see England finally win it
 
So we're starting to see glimpses of who the semi finalists will be. Think the current top 4 are signifcantly better than the rest. I can't really see anyone else breaking into it but I guess you never know.

If tomorrow Australia beats SL and we beat Pak on sunday I think that pretty much would seal it. The games to look out for would be NZ/PAK, NZ/WI, Ind/Eng, Aus/Eng, NZ/Eng. Unless South Africa starts to get things right and make something interesting Otherwise you are right the current top 4 would remain as top 4.

Starc IN Lee OUT

Also had a re-think & I've got Symonds IN & Kallis OUT. Though this leaves me a 5th bowler short, but Tendulkar & Symonds can sort it out between them.

Rohit & Gilchrist also had me thinking a bit, but with a middle order of Kohli, Ponting, De Villiers, Symonds & Dhoni I don't want an opener to soak up the first 50 balls in the first power play & only explode at the end. Would rather Gilly comes in smacks himself out in the first 10 & then leaves enough time for the likes of Kohli & Ponting.

Yes, Ponting's out of position at 4.

In the world in which he averaged 44(tendulkar has the same avg) with a strike rate of 73(tendulkar 86) and has 300 odd wickets.

Every team needs an anchor to build around. And good luck scoring 450 against akram,mcgrath opening spell, waqar coming at first change with warne spinning his magic and having klusener/kallis as the fifth bowling option.

Surely no point in having Dhoni if you’re having Gilchrist open? Unless it’s for his leadership (and obvious batting/finishing quality) but then an all rounder option like Bevan might be more useful?

I mean rohit innings the other day shows the importance of having an anchor, even warner/finch against us(finch was at 75 before destroying hafeez).

With Gilchrist and tendulkar opening, you can use one person to bat through to 40 overs.

Going with Hayden over Gilchrist as I think he's more intimidating. Pollock over Waqar/Steyn etc for some more lower order batting insurance. Essentially a coin toss between choosing Murali over Saqlain.

ABdV is a slightly dubious choice. Nobody
else came to mind for a #5 batsman who can instantly and destructively accelerate.

Hussey was great but Bevan was an awesome finisher. How many games did he win? Also bowled left-arm wrist spin so he's always going to get my vote.
 
People picking Bumrah and Starc etc are just wrong. Akram, McGrath and Ambrose are the best 3 in the our era. Warne or Murali pick themselves. That leaves a 5 bowler who'd probably have to be Kallis.

Oh yeah and I agree, Hussey > Bevan. Bevan wasn't much of a hitter and iirc, had a terrible SR

Have to consider the era Bevan played in when talking about SR.
 
Michel Bevan was incredible.. Cant remember how many times he won the match for Aus.

If we need an all rounder, Klusener gets in.. If its just a finisher.. Bevan easily.

All time XI... Guess neither for me.
Gilchrist + 5 top batsmen.. 2 great all rounders and 3 top bowlers.
 
What, nobody mentions Desmond Haynes, Malcom Marshall, Micheal Holding, Joel Gardner, Andy Roberts or Gary Sobers?!?! How can anyone take a best XI seriously without a mention of at least one of those cricketers???

You are right, no odi all time xi is complete without sobers who took one wicket in the only match he played.

What about Andy Roberts or Malcom Marshall, the 2 greatest fast bowlers to ever walk this planet? The Windies sides of the 70’s & 80’s dominated all forms cricket like no other team has before or since so any cricket XI should include at least 2 or 3 of the great lengendary Windies quickies. Im still traumatized from watching the Windies sides in my youth terrorize batsman.

I think most of us are making these based on players we've actually watched. I'm thankfully not an old cnut, it's why I specified that my team's only the players I've seen (2000s+).
