Overall that was a really pleasing performance, not collapsing under the pressure despite losing key wickets which we’ve seen so many times before. Decent bowling and great in the field. Professional turn out.

Funnily enough getting a ‘par’ score and winning that with their bowling is probably better for England’s long term psyche this tournament than smashing a 400 score this game.
A terrible batting performance by us doesn't change Englands rather average batting performance.

The average ODI score is around 250-255 over the last 5 years. 311 is probably an "average" score on flat wickets.
You should've watched it happen. They looked on their way to 360 but completely lost momentum in their innings.
His Dad played Rugby league for New Zealand I think.

They were not looking to get anywhere near 360. As per Root's mid innings interview, they were looking for 310-330. It was not an absolute flat wicket to be fair. Slower balls were gripping and the wicket was a bit sticky. England reached 311 due to some smart batting and very poor bowling from SA's 3rd and 5th/6th bowling options.
311 was above par on today's wicket as per many experts and I agree with them.
That doesn't make it rather average though , it wasn't a flat wicket . They lost an early wicket and then lost wickets every time they tried to accelerate but still were sensible enough to score 311 which was pretty good on that pitch
It is, but that's kind of the point. We're talking about great players, and I just don't think he has that extra gear to really hurt teams when he gets in. He might get up to a run a ball by the time he reaches a hundred, but that's about it. An exceptionally consistent accumulator, but without that destructive power that separates great batsmen from very good ones despite what his average says.
Definitely. The batsmen can't get 400 every game, we're going to have to rely on our bowlers sometimes too.

Yeah he's a top tier batsman, run a ball hundred with other hitters finishing the job you can rack up the scores.
Would people really have Root amongst their greatest ODI batsmen either?
He's probably currently England's, but I suspect most would have him a level below the greats (or even lower probably), which is exactly where I'm saying Amla is.
This. Archer came in at number 10, that is some batting strength. I fear India fail miserably in that department. Once we are 6 down , thats it for us. 270-6 , we will be bowled out under 290. England can still go 300 plus after being 6 down.

The greats are winners. The greats are clutch players. Amla is just a stat padder.
To be fair to Amla, I think he has been clutch plenty of times in tests. He’s definitely well into his decline now, and he was never going to be the one to lead from the front in this World Cup.
I think this World Cup is going to turn very quickly into the big 3 + 1. The winner is definitely going to be one of the big guns. England may be peaking too early though.
Yeah in tests he's easily up there with the best players in the last 15 years. In ODIs he'll score well batting first when the pitch is flat but in pressure moments and chases he has always been featherweight.
No mate I'm not having that. Amla is one of the classiest top order in a generation.

They had 200 for 3 after 35 overs iirc. They basically collapsed to 311 for 8. Ngidi, Rabada and Tahir pulled it back.

So they were batting at 5.7 an over up until 35 overs and then for the last 15 overs went at 7.4. Not bad I'd say, no issues losing wickets as the pitch was slow and the batting was deep.
