Great win.. Hope the Irish public have some interest in cricket to appreciate the job their players have done.
That really is a stupid decision. Ireland deserve an ODI status like was granted to Zimbabwe in the early 80's. Kenya also, I think, was granted the ODI status, which made them eligible for ICC tournaments.
Ya.. Imagine playing a event like the world cup without a David vs Goliath type of story.. I can understand the commercial interest in having India and Pak advance till the later stages but the competition shouldn't be diluted..Ireland actually deserve test status. Especially if we consider how soon Bangladesh got. Problem is, Bangladesh is Cricket crazy so it made sense commercially. Probably doesn't make commercial sense to award test status to Ireland. It will also mean mandatory series with test nations and the top nations might not want to squeeze out time for Ireland from their schedules jam packed with IPL etc.
There really should be relegation system for test nations every 2-3 years if Cricket can't accommodate more than 10 test nations.
You must have seen that stat mentioned excluding today's result when match was on. It stands at 6-3 now. Six times 300+ has been chased, thrice by Ireland. England, Netherlands and West Indies.Missed Ireland's innings but feck that's brilliant!
Here's a stat that I just saw: 300+ has only been chased 5 times in world cup history. Twice by Ireland!

That's even better! Yup I saw it on someone's twitter feed but didn't notice the time on itYou must have seen that stat mentioned excluding today's result when match was on. It stands at 6-3 now. Six times 300+ has been chased, thrice by Ireland. England, Netherlands and West Indies.
At least Ireland is achieving something in cricket.
Football World Cup? Euros is by default.Unlike Rugby (Won both games in 6 nations so far)
Football (In a good position to qualify for the Euros)
Boxing (Worlds best female boxer)
MMA (McGregor soon to fight for featherweight title)
We are actually a great sporting nation given the size of the country
eh?Football World Cup? Euros is by default.
the seed was planted
Not this again!
Naah. You cannot lump test cricket with ODIs. Also, cup upsets happen all the time in all sports. That's 4th test playing nation Ireland has beaten at world cup. Pakistan, Bangladesh, England & West Indies. These guys should really be considered for test status.
I had no idea we were even playing cricket like the rest of the country but word spread this morning that we won a game and now people are talking about it.
The Irish will take to anything they win in even if it only lasts a week or two
@Lynk get him!!!What? Why me? I am just trying to cheer them up considering they don't really think of cricket as a sport and do nothing relevant in football. Two most popular sports currently.
Case in point:
And we told you before 3 world cups and 2 euros since 1988 for a country our size is very goodSorry, I meant International football.
Even our athletes qualify for Olympic finals' every 4 years. Players seeded in draws for Grand Slams. Doesn't make us any less sporting country. And we told you before 3 world cups and 2 euros since 1988 for a country our size is very good

Yeah I understand that but Bangladesh had done relatively lesser in ODI before they swiftly got test status. Many Irish players play in county cricket, so they won't exactly be awful in tests.Naah. You cannot lump test cricket with ODIs. Also, cup upsets happen all the time in all sports.

To me, the fear is, Ireland losing (because of age) good players by 2018. Strike when iron is hot etc. If ICC are serious about it, this is magnificent chance to probably increase popularity of the game in Ireland. If not test status directly, at least increased ODI programs can help. They blow hot and cold. Scotland absolutely trashed them a week ago.
If they want test status then they can win it, if they're good enough, in a few years.

Question really is how much better than Scotland, Netherlands and Afghanistan they really are right now. I'd say the gulf between the Windies and Ireland is probably bigger than that between Ireland and the rest. I'm not sure they've done enough to justify special treatment, yet. Though, they've started this tournament well. They could go on to strengthen their case further. To me, the fear is, Ireland losing (because of age) good players by 2018. Mind you, they are not like awesome etc. They will still be at max 8th in rankings but to me, there is not much between them and WI, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh right now. Probably WI are overall better but other two not so much. All I want is for ICC to make sure that associate countries who show talent are worked with quickly to make game popular there and spread Cricket in these countries.
Good point but I would say they have done more than other 3 associates you mentioned. This is their 4th victory in world cup over test nation. They have chased 300+ twice vs test nations. Scotland are winless at world cup. Netherlands have won just two and they have been against Namibia and Scotland.Question really is how much better than Scotland, Netherlands and Afghanistan they really are right now. Follow up of Ind-Pak mauka ad, this time with SA and tables turned
Would it be a leap too far to predict death of top class Cricket in the Windies in a few decades?
Would sooner sandbelt my scrotum than take up watching Cricket. But good on the lads.
