I don’t celebrate goals anymore

And we have the benefit of replays, as well as perfect angles to see each play develop. I’d say the joy sapping effect of VAR is far worse for fans in the stadium.

Aye. Its a tricky one, because at the end of the day I'm in favour of the correct decision being made, but its definitely taking something from the game.

This. It’s feckin awful.

It directly affects fan emotion and reaction to goals, NOTHING in the rules need to do that. Nothing should affect the fan experience.

I can’t stand VAR, it’s implementation, management or anything about it.

It’s benefited us quite a lot but as I said at the beginning it’s not worth the hassle and interference with fan reaction to their team scoring, it sterilises the game imo.

I’m buzzing with how well we are doing right now so I try to block this out but it really does affect the way I celebrate goals.

Rashford's winner was my most subdued stoppage time winner ever, I'd imagine. Boring game on a stream and initially unsure if it was in or behind the goal so barely a reaction from me.

VAR has really ruined my immediate excitement when United score.

Last night when Rashford scored the winner in the last seconds, all I could think of was that VAR would probably call for offside. Usually I would have cheered a late winner like a maniac.

Is everyone else able to ignore potential VAR rulings when watching their team score?

Yeah I absolutely ignore potential VAR unless I can see the flag is up or something obvious. I don't really care, feck all United goals get disallowed anyway so I celebrate them all.

I still cheer like a maniac when we score last minute winners. It's a double celebration - one for the goal, and the second for it not being ruled out by VAR a minute later.

I made my son cry with my celebration last night, said I hurt his ears.
That was probably only because there was no way VAR could have over ruled anything with that one, but yeah the celebration is tempered when it's a touch and go offside decision.

My swearing at the tv during united games has to stop, my kids think I am a lunatic.

As for VAR, overall I think it's for the better and will only improve once current teething problems are resolved.

Brilliant and what a great outlook.

It’s not a conscious thing though is it? And it’s not just offsides that cancel goals out now. The Scotland goalkeeper couldn’t even celebrate what was possibly the greatest moment of his career because he had to wait for a potential VAR check.

Whether you are pro VAR or not, I really don’t see how you can argue that it doesn’t take something away from goal celebrations to a degree. I don’t choose not to celebrate, but I find myself holding back sometimes subconsciously.

If for nothing else then VAR has been a success in preventing keepers from coming two yards off their line to save a peno. Was a pet hate of mine.

VAR enforces the rules which makes the game fairer for smaller clubs, just needs to be a bit quicker and 100% consistent application.

Imagine holding off celebration due VAR checks, God forbid you celebrate and if VAR cancels it, emotions go in opposite direction. Also, before VAR, people had initial celebration till late flag for offside, its not like brand new concept.
It's a defence mechanism and is understandable to soften the spirit-crushing realisation that his toenail is offside.
I didn't celebrate Cavani's because that looked offside. I did Rashford's though.

You get used to it, just celebrate twice. NFL, tennis etc... do it all the time.

I’d rather that than being robbed blind due to a lack of technology, think Porto 2004 for instance.

The difference was before you can tell by the players reaction if the flag is up. That was after 2-3 seconds.

now a player can celebrate, do a lap around the stadium and then the goal be ruled out because his pinky finger was offside.

I find it difficult to celebrate twice. As celebrations for goals are really an emotive instant reaction. I wouldn’t be celebrate Ole’a winner twice after a long delay

This is the key point for me. VAR is very much still in its infancy and it will get better

I had an immediate celebration as the ball went in last night but then had to calm myself for fear it could be offside. It 100% ruins the feeling of certainty we used to have.

I still celebrate goals and if VAR disallows a goal, so be it. I just wish VAR got it right more often. That’s the problem.

I lost myself in the moment and was ecstatic for a few seconds after Rashford's goal. Then reality hit and the fear of a potential VAR involvement. I don't enjoy the feeling of impending doom.

Both goals against Leicester i held off for.

But yesterday i forgot and went mad. Couldn't have possibly been off from that position anyway.

I had this problem at first but then I started to celebrate VAR instead. The culmination of technological precision and human-centered decision making is, for me, the pinnacle of human ingenuity. Once we lived in caves, scared of the sun and ferocious badgers but now we can harness the power of VAR to ensure football goals are given correctly. It all started with the code breakers don't you know. We'd never have had VAR if the Germans had won.

God bless it.

Same Im a bit unsure at times and I did the same last night where I had to wait til it was confirmed.

If you actually watched the game and were focussed on it, why would you ever have thought that VAR could have given that offside?

Rashford was off-camera when Bruno played the ball. Nobody who was watching on TV could've been certain that he wasn't offside.

Funny enough this happened to me when Bruno scored the second goal against Leicester. I just sat there waiting for confirmation. Strange considering how important that goal was at the time.

Still not there.

I went crazy last night (wasn't 100% sober, though - to be painfully honest).

But, yes, I see where you're coming from - of course.

VAR has done very little to improve my "match experience" so far.

Enough people have said similar for me to believe it's true.

I just don't understand it. Celebrating a goal is such an instinctive thing, I don't think I'd be able to stop myself. I celebrate, then worry it could be overturned, the do another little giddy clap thing when it isn't. In much the same way that when I'm watching rugby I still celebrate a try even if I know there's a chance I could get stung by a forward pass or whatever.

I can understand it changing the way you celebrate alright but not stopping it. But hey, different strokes and all that.

It's more of a: "yeeeeeessss! feckin' yeeeessss!" as it used to be, but always followed very shortly by an extremely worried "wait, hang on....is it legit?"

Followed by another "yeeeeeessss! feckin' yeeeeessss!"

It took me a fraction of a second to realise we'd scored. I thought it had hit the side netting. I will celebrate regardless.

It takes almost 1.5 seconds from Bruno strikes the ball to Rashford appears on screen. Common sense would tell you he's gaining a few meters on the wrong-sided defender during that timeframe. The only way he would have been offside was if he was standing still the whole time but then he wouldn't have had the acceleration to get to the ball so much quicker than the defender.

VAR is the worst thing to ever happen football.

Some of the best moments in my life came from goals that would definitely have been VAR reviewed and so that celebration where I lost my mind with everyone around me would have been diluted.

I love football for so many reasons but the climax of a goal celebration was the icing on the cake.

I accept it now but only because the alternative is to not watch football anymore

If I ever stop watching football, the main reason will be this.
It's even worse for the fans in the stadiums*, who should take priority really.

Some of you are right moaning, over-dramatic gits. What’s the alternative? Stop VAR from intervening with offsides, so goals like the Drogba one in 2010 can stand and deny us our rightful title?

VAR is brilliant and enhances the sport. The right decision has to be made, and if it’s given like last night, it allows you to go nuts with your celebration twice. If not, tough. The right call was made. United win the title in 2010 and because actually we did it in 2011, Fergie wins an unprecedented 5 in a row, one of the most brilliant achievements in football history.

Football is modernising in terms of on-pitch technology, and it can only be for the better. Jorginho really went up in my estimations when he stuck up for VAR in a recent press conference.

I still celebrate but just on a small delay.

Odd. I celebrated Rashfords goal last night louder than any in the last few months I can remember.

Very much like you, the potential for goals to be ruled out by VAR has pretty much ruined the most exciting part of the game.
It was brought in for clear and obvious mistakes.
So on that basis, the offside lines drawn to line up with an elbow for example cannot be defined as clear and obvious.
What happened to level being inside.
It is a mess frankly.

It’s naught to due with VAR for me, just close offsides. I’ve always been like that, same as with near out of bounds TDs in the NFL.

I admit that goal yesterday is the loudest I have celebrated in a while...

Weird timing for this thread.

Why's it weird? You celebrated loudly so everyone else must have done?

Personally I was bored shitless, mentally switched off from the match and was composing a post about Wayne Rooney's Derby winning last night because it was more interesting to me. The goal barely registered. Nothing to do with VAR but I'm not going think you were strange for not acting like I did, everyone's different.

I celebrate but it's less intense as I'm never sure the goal will stand. Before VAR, only a belated offside flag could deny a goal and it was generally fairly clear on first viewing. Now it feels like any number of reasons could stop the goal, from a minor nudge, to a toe being offside, to an offside player interfering with the goalie's line of sight. It's felt like VAR has been used to look for reasons to disallow goals too often and it's killed some of the spontaneity for me.
