How much of a priority is upgrading our goalkeeper?

It should be your biggest priority. The guy is a disaster. The only area he’s any good in is on the line and even there he’s getting shaky. He’s holding you back. Terribly overplayed goalkeeper who’s style belongs in the early 00‘s. Completely lost with the ball at his feet, can’t defend crosses at all and doesn’t even attempt to sweep.

His style doesn’t belong in any era. How many successful teams over the last 30 years have had a goalkeeper that never leaves his line? Goalkeepers of the early 00s were expected to be even more dominant than goalkeepers of today. We used to laugh at Newcastle fans lauding Shay Given for being a good shot stopper but never leaving his line in those days.

Number 1 priority.

His game outside of shot stopping is basically suicide and I am certain that his cowardice and lack of command creates anxiety and nerves throughout the whole backline.

Who are the bright upandcoming goalkeepers around at the moment? Outside of the fella from Leeds I'm clueless.

It’s mad. I don’t think Henderson is anything special but surely he was at least better suited to how ETH wants to play, no? I have to say it’s very disappointing that he hasn t been able to recognise issues like this.

Newcastle got Pope for £10m who is far better and we're scrambling around with a rumoured £7m budget to hopefully replace someone on £20m a year. So ridiculous.

There's a few things you can definitely ask questions regarding Ten Hag about but the Henderson issue is a non starter. The cnut didn't even speak to Ten Hag in fear of being kept on.

Pope is pretty much high level at everything but he’s appalling with the ball at his feet. He is a keeper that would’ve been world class 20 years ago but now he‘s deficient in a way that means he isn’t good enough for a top club.

Meant to be one coming out of Belgium I think. Vandevoort, don’t know the first thing about him though, plays for Genk.

edit: just read he’s joining Leipzig in 2024.

Midfield and attack needs to be sorted first, they are worse than the GK situation.
After that it's a toss up between RB and GK for me.

No clue what good keepers are out there, though.

I'd thought we could hold off for a year but he needs to be replaced now. The first 2 goals are absolutely on him, but I'd also blame him for the third goal.

If it was a driven ball or swerving heavily it would be one thing, but the ball absolutely floated across the six yard box and any other keeper would have claimed it.

By 3 nil down we're chasing the game so the 4th goal is immaterial I suppose.

We've rewarded mediocrity for so long it has become the norm. To be fair, on his day, his shot stopping is world class. But other areas of his game are mediocre or even lower than that.

It's time to move him on.

Always felt that we missed a golden opportunity by not signing Pope. He was a relatively safe bet and affordable at £10M

If we intend to play out the back then it is a massive priority. Same as when Pep had to replace Hart.

Number one priority and I'm not telling this just because of yesterday's disaster. It amazed me that ETH didn't deal with it immediately, when you build your team you are starting from the back and we have a goalkeeper who is not suitable, who is terrible when it comes to crosses and sweeping the back line and who is on massive unjustified wages.

The first thing he should do is replace him, not spend funds on Malacia and Martinez, because now we don't have enough money to solve all issues within the squad. It's shame that Onana agreed to join Inter before the ETH appointment because he could join for free.

It is very unlikely that we will bring another keeper this window, but in the future, options should be between David Raya and Robert Sanchez. Raya is a little bit better with feet than Sanchez IMO, but Sanchez is much better dealing with crosses so overall I would prefer Sanchez. Luis Maximiano is another keeper I like, comfortable with both feet, a great sweeper to his back line and very good at claiming crosses. Unfortunately, Lazio brought him a month ago for a fee of around £10m.

I can see one of those three goalkeepers being at Bayern in time when Neuer decides to retire.

A lot of the problems with the defence centre on how bad De Gea is.

Every time a defender passes back to him they have to check first to see where he is rather than instinctively knowing. as would be the case with 99.99% of keepers.

The central defenders can't depend on him coming off his line at those times when 99.99% of keepers do. This disrupts their natural game and it's the reason why you can buy another two central defenders and they'll struggle.

I'm not saying he's the answer, but the defence to me, Maguire especially looks a lot more composed when Henderson plays. He's vocal, he comes off his line when he should, they can pass on instinct because he's in the positions when the defenders pass the ball that they've been passing too since they were playing in the U21's.

The real meltdowns from memory usually involve De Gea losing his head.

How anyone can defend him, especially with the salary he's on at this point is beyond me. I suspect they're the same idiots who a few years ago suggested he was better than VdS and Schmeichel.

I was watching UnitedView the other day and they were looking at an article stating that there's a £7m budget for a backup keeper. What a joke this club is.

Is he also a coward who loses his head under pressure? No, that's an upgrade for me then. We're not a top club anymore, we're shambles FC.

This shall become the No.1 priority now. I remember Pep showing the door for Joe Hart right after he took charge, if Ten Hag had done a bit of research he would have done same, atleast he got time to fix this in this window itself. He should act on quickly, everything starts from the back, if we can fix this then we can atleast sort out our defence.

Ah, I remember hearing about him a while back actually ayye. Never seen him play.

It's those leipzig scouts we need more than anything it seems.

I honestly thought it'd be a high priority from the start. When Pep arrived at City, he ruthlessly disposed of Joe Hart because he couldn't play out from the back. He brought in Claudio Bravo - who made far too many mistakes - but at least he didn't fundamentally hinder the progression of the team by being unable to play out.

Henderson would be Ten Hag's #1 now if he had stayed, but alas.

It's not even hard to upgrade from DDG. His area commanding is awful, distribution is terrible, doesn't move away from goal line.
Pep binned Joe Hart, Klopp sign 2 GKs before Allison and I lost count how many GKs Chelsea's signed over the years.
Just get a stop gap GK to challenge DDG this season. Not every signing has to be a luxury one.

The Joe Hart / Pep comparisons are lazy but perfect. DDG cannot do, not will be be able to learn, what the manager needs his keeper to do.

We need a new keeper. This transfer window.

One of the highest priorities. City and Liverpool’s recent goalkeeper signings were game changing for their entire style of football and progression has been astronomical since. No idea who is out there in that mould mind.

De gea will cost us points this season. In the same way he has for the last 3 years. That will pale into comparison that amount of points we will lose because we don’t have a functional team.

I know we will need a keeper more suited to ten haags football soon but I’m sure someone can teach de gea to pass it to our left back.
I'd argue he's already cost us 6 points.

He was terrible in both league games so far.

I would say he cost 4 points max. Hard to blame him for the 3 points against Brentford when the team didn't score.

What you saying now?
I’m saying that he had a horrible game. And a pretty bad first one too. But unlike the rest of the usual suspects, I’m still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Dave cost us the game yesterday, 100%. I still don’t think its a priority to replace him. If the trend continues though then obviously yes, we need a new goalie and fast.

We need a keeper who is a leader and can distribute. Doesn’t hurt if he can also handle balls into the box. You know, everything you expect from a keeper in a top side. Dave is done; we need to just bite the bullet and try to loan him out and cover most if not all his wages or buy him out of his contract. Defense wins championships.

He can't play football. We have a manager who wants us to play out from the back.

He's no longer in the Spanish squad due to this.

He's done.

I’ve defended him for a long time, and I will admit its getting harder and harder to do so, but I am still willing to give him one last chance. Not least because there are about 5 players who deserve to go before he does.

Raya the Brentford Goalie should be a target for us, he was outstanding last season before his injury and he seems to have pick it up this season again just look at how quick he was to get that ball off Rashford and that Free kick claims he made yesterday i thought to myself Dave won't be that brave.
