How good is Eddie Howe?

He will keep his job until summer or close to it and get sacked and mourinho will be in in the summer his contract up with Roma then.

then the real cash splashing starts

Will probably be good timing for all parties if the England job comes up in late summer. Howe will walk that interview process given what he's achieved in last decade.

Yeah can't see him continuing beyond this season at the most.

Wouldn't be overly surprised if he's gone in Feb though.

Like others have mentioned, he's going to be a victim of his own success. I think it was a massive achievement what they did last season and there was always going to be some drop off given they were competing in not only europe for the first time but the CL (in recent history). They've been hit by a massive spate of injuries which mean they haven't been able to rotate the squad and with the intensity they play at it was always going to be difficult to manage.

Also they are in the same situation as us, in terms of who do you appoint next? There isn't many top managers available on the market at the moment and they would have to take a slight risk in appointing one and banking that he can take them further than Howe. The wrong appointment and it could set the club back years.

Still viewed very positively by the vast majority. I'm sure there's some twitter numpties calling for the sack but overall still a lot of good will in the bank from the first 2 seasons.

Most common criticisms are his leaving it late for subs and general reluctance to rotate until his hand has been forced through injury/suspension.

As it should be. He's a high quality manager and has a long track record of improving players and getting a lot out of his team. He did very well at Newcastle last season and what he did at Bournemouth moving up the divisions with a properly tiny club was remarkable. It's all gone wrong this season with the Champions League to worry about but managers get sacked stupidly quickly in modern football compared to other sports.

If you gave him time to review what he's doing and get some players back I'm sure he'd eventually find a formula to turn it around and set up for a better season next term but it probably won't happen.

A number of these clubs with high intensity game plans have players dropping like flies.

A more patient and considered way of playing is necessary to maintain the players' availability and fitness when regular midweek football comes into play.

Yep I agree, I think it's also a consequence of last season and the world cup. Plus players training too much in the off-season and the pre season tours.

It's hard to suddenly revert to a different style of play or change from week to week if that's what you're accustomed to playing. Teams like City can manage it due to the depth/quality of their squad and also they have 60%+ possession every game.

Like Ten Hag I feel he over performed, but just in a bigger scale. And now he's being mugged off which just makes me laugh at how knee jerk some football followers are.

I think this might be the end of him. Not literally, of course. Maybe.

He's excellent, they've had a dip in form for whatever reason. But his overall time at Newcastle, he's been excellent. Think for whatever reason people just don't like him, and have been patiently waiting to dig their claws in.

I reckon they give him until the end of the season and bin him. He'll probably fall straight into the England job after the Euros.

He's a good mid table boss

Spent nearly £100 million net last summer and are on course to finish with 17 fewer points than last season.

He will get replaced by Potter at the end of the season. Would actually be an excellent move for Newcastle. Potter is a better version of Howe.

Keep them both away from United.

Howe like ETH doesn't have the capability to pull a rabbit out of hat (like Klopp or Pep)

They will do well if they have the full squad available. They are equally decimated with injuries . Pretty much the same fate as ours.

Pope
Trippier, Schar,Botman,Livramento
Bruno - Tonali - Joelington
Gordon - Wilson-Isak

first team is not bad actually.

How did Klopp do when Liverpool had Van Dijk and Salah out for a bit, or with Fabinho getting on etc. Better than Howe, but not a whole lot better?

We will never find out how Pep will do with a normal-ish depleted squad for much of a season. He’s never tried it and never will.

Yeah, he's overall done a very good job. They have a clear way of playing that annoys good teams and seems to work okay against weaker sides.

I think they're just suffering from too many injuries and Almiron turning back into himself (a good all-around player who needs to score at least twice as many goals to be a starting option at this level, sort of what I expect from Pellistri in 2-3 years, really) .

He's gonna get binned this summer. Just hope he's not headed to United if the club axe ETH.
More worrisome is the fact that Newcastle will also be looking for a manager this summer and hence we’ll have greater competition.

Funny how Newcastle’s defence suddenly turned to shite.
It’s almost as if lack of confidence had an impact on players’ ability

He had a good 18 months after being appointed at Newcastle but his managerial career to date suggests he's not excellent. Generally he's fine. He's not good enough for Newcastle's ambitions and the longer he's there, the funnier it will get.

He did an excellent job there during his first 18 months. I actually thought he might not end up being their placeholder manager (Mark Hughes at City) at one point. But it's just gone too badly since around December. 15 losses in all competitions. We've somehow lost even more. 16 defeats.

Injuries have played a part. But, like ten Hag, Howe's training methods need to be questioned. It's obviously contributing to their injury list.

It's been a funny season for them. Some big results and scalps, such as:

Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa
Sheffield Utd 0-8 Newcastle
Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd
Aston Villa 3-1 Newcastle
Newcastle 3-0 Wolves

Newcastle 1-0 Man City
Man Utd 0-3 Newcastle
Sunderland 0-3 Newcastle

Milan 0-0 Newcastle
Newcastle 4-1 PSG
PSG 1-1 Newcastle

He deserves credit for massively improving players like Schar, Longstaff, Joelinton, Almiron, Murphy. He's brought through Miley also. And he's generally gotten the best out of their big money signings. Bruno Guimaraes, Gordon and Isak have all lived up to expectations.

They might give him one more season. They're a lot more patient than Chelsea and City were when they started their projects. They're conscious of FFP and public opinion.
