How good is Eddie Howe?

I think the squad has just burnt out and a few sub-par players aren't in their purple patch anymore. Still think he's shown that he's a better manager than what he did at Bournemouth and think he'd be a good choice for the next England manager.

That Almiron purple patch was a legendary, generational purple patch

That was an interesting season for Howe and Newcastle. The highest of highs and some real lows. 18 defeats in all competitions is too high.

But there were some very impressive wins:

Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa
Sheffield Utd 0-8 Newcastle
Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd
Aston Villa 1-3 Newcastle
Newcastle 4-3 West Ham (3-1 down)
Newcastle 4-0 Spurs
Brentford 2-4 Newcastle

Newcastle 1-0 Man City
Man Utd 0-3 Newcastle
Sunderland 0-3 Newcastle

Milan 0-0 Newcastle
Newcastle 4-1 PSG
PSG 1-1 Newcastle

They finished the season on 85 PL goals. Howe did get the best out of their attackers. It's the defence that's let them down. If they can sign an athletic CB or two, they could be in the mix for CL football again next season.

I still feel like Howe might be a placeholder type manager for them while they continue to get things in order. They've had to be a lot more patient than Chelsea and City were when they got rich. They appear to be playing by the rules.

Winning The Conference League would be a good milestone for them. They need a trophy.

7th is decent for them. Needs a cup run though I feel

Thye've got to move on from Dan Burn

Yeah, Howe is obviously big on togetherness and the overall culture. Burn being a local lad plays into that. Hall should have played more games at LB this season.

Howe has extracted all that he can from players like Burn, Schär, Longstaff, Almirón and Murphy. They'd still be good squad players. Upgrades are needed though.

They need to see if Tonali can possibly anchor the midfield next season. That would free up Bruno Guimarães to attack. He does his best work in the opposition half.

Their 4-3-3 suits their energetic midfielders. An athletic CB and disciplined DM would elevate them further.

How often has the 7th placed team scored 85 goals?

Or should I say Howe often?

When you look at that team, ignoring injuries, I would say it's the 4th best in the league on paper. So in that sense I think Howe underachieved this season. But still think he's worth keeping for them in the medium term at least. They need to focus on getting the defense sorted out and not lose Isak, Gordon, or Bruno G (can't be bothered trying to spell that last name).

He’s so good , that im sure he would make us(manchester united) play better football than we do now

They don't have the 4th best team in the league, no chance. Pope's a good keeper but so is Emi Martinez. Schar-Botman been a good CB combo but it's not better than Romero-Van De Ven imo, Udogie is a better LB than Burn etc.

Was always going to be very hard for Newcastle to make CL in consecutive seasons (as it will be for us next season).

6th would've still been good for them, 7th and possibly missing out on europe altogether will be a disappointment so all eyes on next week.

Yeah I mean I think Spurs has a better defense than Newcastle and Villa has a better goalkeeper but I don't think that changes my mind. With Spurs I'm biased so let's forget about that, but I would personally take Newcastle's team over Villa's from what I've seen. Defense definitely needs work but that's probably the easiest thing to fix given the players available this summer. And to be fair I think they've been more impacted by injuries than Spurs or Villa.

Chelsea is harder to say, but I think I would still take Newcastle's players over Chelsea's. However also think Chelsea's team has more potential.

Newcastle at their best were really good, but they're also probably the most inconsistent team in the league, and as I said injuries cost them quite a bit. So overall I think they've underperformed, but I wouldn't blame Howe for that really. Think he's done a pretty good job.

They were strange. At their best they were one of the best teams in the world. And at their worst they were relegation fodder - in League One.

Their performances against PSG and Liverpool, never seen anything like it from a team of this size and quality and money. Like they hired a bunch of lookalikes and sent them on the pitch instead of the real players. Seriously, they didn't even look like a professional football team, and that's down to coaching...

A very very good manager who'd shite on eredivisae if he was manger there

Are you referring to Newcastle? They dismantled PSG and were unlucky with the reverse game ending in a draw

Yes. I'm talking about PSG - Newcastle. A game in which Newcastle could have conceded 10 goals

He is so overrated its not even funny. Newcastle have spent so much money and with that squad should have finished top 4. Howe is a bang average manager.

Do you believe ETH is a better manager?
United spent loads more than Newcastle, what a dumb post. Its their squad better than Spurs or even Chelsea's What are you on about?

I dont rate ETH at all so thats a mute point. United have underperformed and so has Newcastle. Yes I believe they have a better squad than Spurs. There is a reason teams like Arsenal are trying to sign Newcastle players.
This Newcastle team under a proper manager would have ended above Chelsea and Spurs.

I find that a surprising post. They've still in the process of getting their first 11 up to elite standard and probably a year or two off that. Everyone could see Dan Burn was dropping off mid season. He's played a big part in their rise in last two years but feels the right time for him just to go to a cover player. Trippier also declined now.

In midfield Bruno Guimaraes is top class and Joelinthon been a revelation under Howe but the rest of Anderson, Willock, Longstaff do solid jobs but they aren't better than what is at other clubs. I wouldn't have Longstaff/Willock over Luiz/McGinn, no chance. Tielemans also spent half a season warming our bench and he's better than they are. I assume you'd say the same with Bentancur/Sarr?

Upfront Isak is obviously top level, Gordon has also adapted well to the Howe pressing/counter style but third spot up for grabs still. Actually probably one of their most consistent players in last two months has been Jacob Murphy. That's the crux though as he hasn't quite got the quality to be a regular in a consistent top 4 side but does a great job for the team and wouldn't be the sort who'd complain if he was benched for parts of the season.

It's a step back season for them. They need to be really in the top 4 mix next year though otherwise Howe will be under sustained pressure from their ownership for the first time I think.

Not sure why the hate and bitterness, shown more these past past 2 seasons than ETH has in his.
Personally he's a manger that shows respect to the league and hasn't often got a bad word to say. But I could be wrong.

He is the best English manager at the moment and players have improved under him. The hate is just embarrassing. I would have him over most of the managers we have been linked to. He is a very good manager. That Newcastle team have no business scoring 85 premier league goals. We supposedly have better attackers than them, No one here will exchange their midfield with ours bar Bruno Guimaraes and they have suffered as much injuries in defence as we have with Pope out for most of the season.

Newcastle's underlying stats put them as the 4th best team in the league. They weren't as good as last season but did well overall considering the injuries.

The injuries are very much because of how he plays though, they were playing at a ridiculously frenetic pace they could never sustain. Similar to the criticisms are levelled at Ten Hag, they're both peas in a pod of naive squad management.

They blew away a lot of teams this year. 85 goals is more than Klopp's early seasons if im not mistaken. Fix that defense and they'll be up there.

Yeah, its not too dissimilar to Ange at Tottenham or Poch at Chelsea either. Or Bielsa at Leeds.

One of the patterns we see from a lot of managers is this very high energy style where you press the other side hard, have a lot of matches like basketball games, and then rely on a combination of superior attacking talent and (assumedly) higher energy levels to batter the opposition.

Ultimately, I think this is a style that can help sides in the fight for top four and European places but has a fairly low ceiling. It burns the players out physically and any kind of off-the-ball approach that depends so much on outworking your opponent is bound to fail in the long run. You will eventually have matches and stretches in the season where your players don't have the energy to outwork the opponent and you'll need to find ways to grind out wins when energy levels are equal or when the opponent actually has more energy than you.

Its not a surprise that most of the teams having run of success with this playing style (Newcastle last year, Spurs and Chelsea at times this year, Leeds before things fell apart) were doing it when out of Europe.

Newcastle press very effectively as a team though. That's a big difference between the two. They really go for the kill when they're at it.

We rarely ever see that level of intensity from our players.

Howe has plenty of midfield options when everyone is fit. Tonali, B.Guimarães, Longstaff, Miley, Anderson, Joelinton and Willock is good collection of profiles.

He needs to rotate more next season. I remember watching them vs PSG away. They were out on their feet and had a very weak bench, but he refused to bring on any of the youngsters. He should have at least brought on Hall to freshen it up.

Newcastle are very like Klopp's 15/16 Liverpool team. They could become a very good team if they learn from this season.

Exactly. It quickly gets into "if I only had the players to do what I want". Well yeah, would be great if you had 10-15 high intensity sprinters, who are also technically sound and never injured. Where are all these players, eh?

When you look at pretty much all the elite teams, they regularly have players at the core of their team that aren't actually all that mobile, but extremely good on the ball and keeping possession.

Sure, that's no really the point I'm getting at though. They may press well as a team, but they will never be able to do it for the full season and the proof is in the fact they're sat right next to us in the league.

The bolded part is even more proof he's like Ten Hag! .

I think they're better than them at that point, but to get to that next level, they're going to need an elite CB and another top forward. I think you can win a title with their midfield, as seen with Liverpool.

They had a really good defence last season actually, was one of their strenghts. This season it was a disaster. At times apocalyptic. If Liverpool players didn't collectively forget how to score on New Year's, Howe gets sacked the following day. And they conceded 4 goals in that game

Yeah, I'd agree. The country has been calling out for a good English manager but then, when one comes around, people want to sh*t all over them.
To think about the transfers they have made and the impact they have had, you'd begin to wonder, what our lot are doing.

85 goals scored and their defense was decimated by long-term injury. They also have the capability to thrash teams.

If Eddie somehow gets them to replicate their defensive solidarity of last season and replicate the goal scoring form of this recent campaign, they are challenging for the league. It's jumping the gun but to his credit the stats does give him credibility.

If Howe was available or he had a favorable contractual conditions, I'd take him at United over most managerial candidates.
