How good is Eddie Howe?

Ah yeah they should’ve just pulled out a bunch more 16-17 year olds instead, great idea
Yeah, like they did with Miley?!

They have a big squad, they had senior players on their bench today they could have started.

Aye, a squad that has been missing:

Anderson
Barnes
Botman
Burn
Longstaff
Murphy
Pope (now)
Targett
Tonali
Willock
Wilson

Lewis Hall has been the only player in the bench for the past 5 matches that you were expecting to get any minutes in PL this season and Howe doesn't seem to trust him yet.
Very reminiscent of United's injury table for a bit, oh and also Spurs injury list.

Who exactly were they supposed to replace Miley with? Longstaff hasn’t played since the beginning of November and the rest of the bench is defenders and keepers. Wilson is also just coming back from injury

There are no other senior players on that bench as far as I can tell, at least not ones who have played any decent amount of PL football over the last couple of years.

Their squad is nowhere near as extensive as ours and it was always going to bite them this season, but I don’t see how that means Howe is doing a poor job. Raising the average quality all across a squad takes multiple windows, as we all very well know

This is spot on. Miley is a potential star but we don't really have anything behind him in the youth teams after the Ashley negligence and it's a lot to ask of Miley too to play five 90 minutes in couple of weeks against elite opposition. Longstaff and Wilson were in the squad for the first time after their injuries. Lewis Hall is the only other player on the bench that I was expecting to see get any minutes in the PL but Howe doesn't seem to really trust him yet for one reason or another. Ritchie and Dummett are basically mascots now and Krafth was never really good enough for PL despite some rejuvenated performances in 21-22 and he is coming back from an ACL.

Man Utd obviously have had their share of injuries this season too but the players you can still bring on the replace them are simply much better than anything NUFC have, same for Spurs. We basically have our other eleven out and don't have anything behind them. Howe still has some learning to do with rotation but think injuries also often come down to luck. De Zerbi has been rotating a lot and they've still been struggling with injuries too.

Personally I think this season is basically a free hit for Howe especially with all the injuries. Last season he surpassed any expectations and basically jumped over one season in the project, we really weren't supposed to make the CL after his first full season. Now we are playing CL with some players who anyone wouldn't have thought was possible couple of years ago.

Anyone know how many players have reported being treated for asthma? They have been covering way too much ground at SJP this year, it is kinda fishy

Miley is a mainstay now was my point, he's slotted in nicely.
He's now a senior player.

They had two strikers they paid £100m for yesterday, a couple of midfielders who cost £80m between them.

I have little sympathy for them, especially when Howe could easily utilize the squad they have, but he's rather persist with the same 10 outfield players because he doesn't trust the rest of his squad.

I thought that kind of thing came with the side effect of players never getting injured? That's what a lot have said on here in the past anyway.

They were dropping like flies recently! Think they've run themselves into the ground and not being able to rotate since getting the injuries has worsened the situation. They look knackered and are getting the results one would expect from a tired team.

I’m really not sure if you’re being purposefully ignoring logic here or what?

you’ve answered your own question. He has midfielders for 80m starting, while having 0 rotation options on the bench. It doesn’t matter how much these players cost, having to play 90mins twice a week without being even subbed off once in a while will take its toll. It’s not like expensive players are immune to physical exhaustion.

The only reason Miley has been getting this much game time is because there’s literally nobody else to play. Yes he’s done quite alright for his age but he certainly wouldn’t be starting if they had more senior options fit.

I am in no mood to defend EtH as can be seen in other threads. However, I am bemused by all the excuses being made for Eddie Howe in the media when we went through a similar injury crisis earlier in the season and no one was giving us an inch:
1) Lisandro Martinez
2) Casemiro
3) Antony (personal issue)
4) Sancho (personal issue)
5) Malacia
6) Amad
7) Mainoo
8) Mount (of & on)
9) Shaw
Some more I might be missing.
Shows why Man United manager and players have it tougher than other clubs. That’s why doing well at Brighton is no guarantee of success at United.

Yes, we also had Wan Bissaka and Reguillon out at the same time as the other fullbacks, and we've also been missing Evans and Eriksen for weeks now. Newcastle have probably been hit a little harder with injuries than United, but not to the point that the issue gets trotted out several times a game in their case, and not at all in United's.

So given the choice of running your players into the ground, potentially increasing their already lengthy injury list, or trusting some of the squad (and note that he has over 34 players at his disposal) and resting some players, you'd go with the former rather then the latter?

I mean the most ridiculous thing about all this is Newcastle have actually used the most players so far out of anyone this season, yet haven't rotated in the past 5 games, so to me this shows that a) Newcastle DO have the squad to cope and b) Howe simply does not trust anyone else bar his favorite 11.

He has 10 reported injuries, level with Sheffield United, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, one more than United and Spurs.

I also find it quite funny that one of the things he's praised for is the (alleged) significant improvements he's made to the likes of Joelinton, Almiron and Schar, as if Newcastle haven't almost immediately shat the bad as soon as they're the ones relied on to perform.

Almost like they look better when they're surrounded by £400 million of new, better players.

Very very good point, obviously there is context to take into consideration here, but it is still a valid point.

Murmurs of the sack, but we all know Tindall is the real brains behind the operation anyways

if he gets sacked by Newcastle....the next day we should sack EtH and bring him to United

Why do you think he'd do any better here? They've had quite similar records and even net spends so far.
for one...i think we would be much better organized and not quite so open to play against

secondly...we wouldn't play such a slow style of football. Dutch way of possession football is great IF you have forwards who have the ability to hurt teams on their own. Right now just don't have that so this slow tempo just makes it hard for us to score and create. Howe plays a much more aggressive style of attacking football.

i was fortunate about 8 years ago to get the chance to spend 2 weeks with him at Bournemouth the summer they were promoted to the premiership. He's a really well organized and quality manager.

Fair enough points and it's hard to disagree. Ten Hag always looks and sounds the part too though, not unlike Howe, but it's a results based business.

Getting a very easy ride with the UK media be interesting to know what the Newcastle owners targets/objectives for the season was. At guess top 4 in the Premier league, reaching the knock out stage off the CL and not regress in the domestic cup competitions.

He won't be there next season. I would say he's another name that was flavour of the month here not too long ago, and is about the 50th manager post ferguson that people have overreacted to doing a fair job somewhere else. Finding the right manager for United right now isnt easy, and it definitely isnt Eddie Howe.

Short term impacts are easy to make, especially if the club has no midweek distractions. 2nd seasons are much harder, and it's much harder to manage when you are in Europe and have to deal with fixture congestion, normal injuries that occur due to fixture congestion, fatigue, loss of form, loss of time to train between games, etc. I'm always hesitant to praise a manager too much until they show they are able to perform well in successive seasons and while dealing with congestion and still putting out good performance levels. Results don't need to always be there, but keeping the same style of play and showing a high level of coaching is important.

Howe hasn't shown that, will take time for Ange to show that. De Zerbi has done pretty well imo, along with obviously Emery in the past obviously has done great with this.

Next season? Their next fixtures are Liverpool, City and Aston Villa. He'll get sacked.
