Television House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel) - No book spoilers allowed

Agree with those who say that the battle was terrible.

The genius crab guy who has kept their army at bay for 2 (?) years decides to send his fighters 6 at a time (in single file, "One at a time lads, we don't want to overwhelm him!") to fight Daemon in the open and then literally all of them to encircle him (after he is injured) before being cut in half in the cave (off screen) where he has been hiding for 2 (?) years (Shouldn't he have some advantage in a cave fight?).

I don't get all the complaining about the battle. It served it's purpose of advancing Daemons standing in westeros... If they dont cut corners with that, it's a whole series in itself.

Yeah it was a bit Hollywood but it doesn't bother me as much as some on here.

I mean, if that's the case, then just don't show it. Have message be relayed that Daemon has succeeded. Because it wasn't really a great spectacle anyway, and It kind of leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth for the series moving forward. One of those things where the less you see, the better, because what we did see was anticlimatic anyway.

I'm still enjoying the show; starting to like the characters more and more now.

How I feel

She's great. But I also like Viserys a lot more than I did, and I still find Daemon interesting. And Otto seems like a perfectly good slimeball character, although not to the degree that Littlefinger was. The show is still missing a little bit of humour at the moment. It's a little too po-faced.

yeah the dialogue in some parts is superb stuff. Think Paddy Considine is doing an amazing job.

Those were all slam dunk (a very positive thing for those not into basketball) castings. I’m all in on team Rhaenyra. On Daemon I wasn’t sure about who “Doctor” is that people keep referring to, but he is an imposing presence on screen and has been in some of the best scenes so far (throne room with Viserys and the bridge in Dragonstone).

Viserys cuts an empathetic figure despite seemingly doing everything wrong. The ‘good heart thrust into a role in life requiring ruthlessness and eventually failing’ type thing...he’s playing a blinder at it.

Lyonel Strong is another good character. Everyone else is scheming while he is offering Viserys sound advice....which must mean he is just good at hiding his scheming.

Rewatched the first three episodes as missed something the first time around but I can now happily go to sleep knowing that the guy flying the dragon was in fact half Targaryen

Agreed if he’s the guy who I’m thinking of. Seems like the one offering the most unbiased and sound advice to the King

He is the square-built dark haired member of the small council who sits nearby King Viserys. He and his brother son the club-footed guy seem like they might be sneaky good characters.

I like Daemon but that scene did go a bit far. Would have been better for him to subsequently get fecked up by the Crab man when he entered the cave. That would have been a shock at least.

I dislike the time jumps, screws with the continuity.

It's just hard to care about anything that happens in this show or to be more accurate doesn't happen.

Without the threat of White Walkers and so many Houses jostling for position of all seems very dull.

Like Rings of power everyone is far too po faced and too many shots of people staring blankly at each other while saying banal dialogue.

At least Rings of Power has a threat coming we can all look forward too this show doesn't have that and won't.

Game of Thrones worked at least for most of its run because we wanted to know what works happen when the White Walkers came, we wanted to know who Jon Snow is, We were interested in all the different characters and Houses.

This show has none of that.

Which Targaryan will win? Who really cares that hasn't already read the books or looked it up?

To be honest, I agree with you. The big threat of White Walkers etc. isn't there no matter how much they allude to it

The great thing about GOT at its peak it had a mix of everything - political gameplay and fantasy. This has only fantasy, and even that's poor in comparison

Loved this show so far
The actors are doing a tremendous job. The final scene could have been shown less and even more effective but I'm not that bothered as some here. At least he zig zagged when the arrows were coming down :nervous:

Absolutely loved the three episodes overall though. And the use of music through out. The politics and character dialogue so far has been intriguing

Daemon reminds me so much of Ramsay when he talks.

Only fantasy and no political gameplay? What do you mean? The best part is arguably the politics with the fantasy taking a backseat.

Then watch Succession which does it far better. A fantasy show with no threat is really boring

I like how people are critical of the battle scenes when it’s a fantasy show with dragons and shit.

I agree, that's why I am meh on this show at best. It's focused more on fantasy element (at least to me) and the politics stuff seems.... basic? I dunno, maybe cos it's early but there seems to not be enough strong characters and good backstabbing. Also I think one of the reasons GOT was strong early on at least is because you had multiple locations/stories going on, of course not all were great but it keeps it interesting enough

I think something has to be strong on this show to get over the fact we all know it ends with nothing ultimately (the threat from the north barely did anything). I don't think the fantasy element is strong here (but always weak anyway) and the politics stuff is poor/predictable

Thats beside the point. There is a universe that has certain aspects - dragons, magic, etc - but within this universe humans are portrayed to behave normally with some exceptions (eg. those that can do magic), so the whole premise around this (and other battles from GoT) should have been equal to a medieval equivalent where one side has some technological advantage - for example trebuchets or other. (In fact the advantage of a dragon is infinitely bigger than that) So they could have copied some historical battle in similar conditions or easily make up something more believevable than the lazy writing that was on display.

You're giving him far too much credit with this reply.

Was wondering who the club footed guy was. For some reason, thought he was related to Rhaenyra’s personally selected Kingsguard

Yeah it felt like they tried to do it like Battle of the Bastards but ended up looking like a scene out of some random anime. Ah well, there will be more hopefully biger battles soon.

I think the politics have been done excellently so far, dunno how it can be done better.
