Television House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel) - No book spoilers allowed

Yeah, he's basically just a king who doesn't need to do much is what I got, the people are generally happy, there's no invasions or anything been going on for years?
Correct, he was given the King title to quash any potential rebellion years back so it has all been OK and calm in Westeros. Him not having an irrefutable heir is what is gonna cause the trouble.

It was okay. I can't get worked up about it. Daemon is so ugly. Is he supposed to be that ugly in the source material?

Edit: He Is supposed to be otherworldy beautiful in the source material.

Yeah he’s meant to be too chill to be a ruthless king; he just wants everyone to get along. Plus I am thinking him getting cut by sitting on the throne at the end is a metaphor for him not being suitable to sitting in it. Unless that and the cut on his back means he’s got some sort of advancing disease.

I think that's intentional, he's not meant to be a "kingly" king.

Yeah, to be honest, that's what I was initially thinking when watching. He seems a bit limp, and he's in bad health, so that does make sense. Also just seems like the type to want everyone just to get along with each other. And we know how that normally ends up in this world.

They went for realistic design. The chap was a killing machine, taking pleasure from power struggle.

Actor's face perfectly fits the arrogant barbaric type, not lady's refined aristocrat and imo it fits this twat perfectly.

I've never been a fan of Matt Smith, but that pilot episode has swung it.

He was brilliant. The jealousy, the anger, resentment just seeps out so vividly. Can't believe we have to go back to waiting 7 days to find out what happens next !!!!

Yess! That theme song gave me goosebumps. I have to say Daemon is my instant favorite. I feel like I need to watch Doctor Who now.
There's so much going on I can't process it all yet. Solid episode though.
The talk Viserys had with Rhaenyra about protecting the relm and showing her the dagger was the highlight for me.

Yep, that was the best part of that episode for me too. Viserys telling Rhaenyra about the threat that the White Walkers will bring and handing her the dagger to be used in order to destroy the night king. So basically we now know that Aegon the Conqueror foresaw the rise of the White Walkers and the threat they posed to the whole of Westeros some 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones took place. Makes you now think when did that secret and dagger being handed down stop being shared from king to heir? Was it when the Targaryens were overthrown?

Just watched the first episode with my 38 weeks pregnant wife. She didn't feel well :nervous:

That. Was. Mint.

And I say that as someone who was barely into GoT enough to keep watching it 'til the end.

Matt Smith really stood out in a great way. He really came across as an intelligent villain that has some redeeming qualities. I am a Whovian, so seeing him play a darker role is fantastic. It is difficult to take his platinum blonde wig seriously after seeing him with short brown hair for the past two decades.

He's not the villain, he's right in almost everything.

Really enjoyed the first episode it’s starting to shape up nicely.

It’s just good to get a GoT fix.

Enjoyed the first episode. The Iron Council is made up if some great actors.
Any idea when it's going to jump forward in time? Next episode?

I thought Otto was a nice dude until he asked his daughter to put on a dress... :nervous:

Enjoyed that. Its nice to have proper pacing and writing once again. The council dynamic is excellent, was always one of my favourite aspects of GoT in the early days.

Hopefully we have more titties in the second episode!! And I'm talking about prime titties... not some random whore in the background.

That was pretty damn good. Only thing I didn't like was the honestly baffling decision to have that "a Targaryen needs to be on the throne to defend humanity against the long winter" speech at the end. If GoT season 8 hadn't happened, that would have been cool. But as it is we know it didn't mean shit, and all it did was take me out of that otherwise great scene and momentarily make me remember the terrible disappointment of the ending of GoT.

Just a weird choice to make.

Yeah. I enjoyed the episode but the less they talk about GoT the better. The last three seasons and especially the 8th really put a damper on the shine of that franchise. Why pump up an enemy 200 years in advance when we see their descendents deal with it with in one episode with no major character deaths

Thought the CGI was a bit sh*t compared to GOT but like the episode otherwise. Great acting, good characters, intrigued for the rest of the season.
The dragons looked ok, but the lighting didn't fit into the scene. They're supposed to all look different (each dragon has something specific to them, generally color but sometimes temperament or size) so they will look different to the GoT dragons which were basically interchangeable, looks wise. And hopefully they're saving cgi budget for battles later in the season

I found it fairly alright - which in itself is a huge improvement over late GOT. It dangled a modicum of intrigue whilst not being particularly outstanding. Crucially it wasn't excessively clunky, the acting was satisfactory and there aren't any immediately dustbinable characters.

I guess it had to drip feed a few GOT motifs in here and there for the normies, I just hope it comes with some fresh ideas. I don't need to watch the same environments housing the same schemes by identikit characters.

There is scope for it to become terrible but also enough to build something good if handled carefully.

The dragons looked goofy and the cgi textures on the buildings appeared cheap and unconvincing. But the effects usually get better as these things progress for some reason, and if the drama is strong then I can forgive the noodle dragons.

There's going to be smaller time jumps throughout the season but the big time jump will happen in episode 6 iirc. That's when the new actors for Rhaenyra and Alicent come in.

Isn't that everything, ever?

Thats a shame, the two girls are doing very well. And I hate change.
