Television House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel) - No book spoilers allowed

I enjoyed it, solid start.

Just great to have it back on tv

Solid start so far. I'm into it. But it's just so hard not to compare it to the original. It's unfair. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Those looks cool and Dr Who was great in this. Looked more like Sauron than Slim Shady.

Yeah that was quite good. Some of the CGI was a bit dodgy though.

Need to rewatch. There was a lot to unpack there.

Saw a Baratheon and a Stark towards the end there, but was there any mention of the Lannisters?

That was pretty damn good. Only thing I didn't like was the honestly baffling decision to have that "a Targaryen needs to be on the throne to defend humanity against the long winter" speech at the end. If GoT season 8 hadn't happened, that would have been cool. But as it is we know it didn't mean shit, and all it did was take me out of that otherwise great scene and momentarily make me remember the terrible disappointment of the ending of GoT.

Just a weird choice to make.

It's definitely too early to say. For the most part, GoTs acting only failed when the writing failed. There were some great performances here, though.

Post season 6 GoT turned into a parody of itself. Broke my heart. Sure season 6 was more "Hollywood" than previous seasons but it still felt like Game of Thrones.

S7&8 felt like it was written by Joss Wheadon x Taika Watiti.

Agreed. Almost ruined the episode for me given how shit the WWs ended up being. However, together with the opening about Daenerys, I think it was purely to link the two series and remind the viewer it’s the same universe. Overall though I’m hoping we don’t hear about the game of thrones era again.

What a banger to start with.

Can't imagine they can keep this level over all episodes. The costumes are fantastic.

I don’t think I understand your opposition to that line? I thought it provided an important insight into the Targaryen ethnocentrism; this view that only they can ‘save’ the living. It wasn’t meant to be taken literally, particularly coming from a character clearly preoccupied with safeguarding his lineage.

Gosh i hate trickled episode. I wish they'd just go Netflix style

I like appointment TV sometimes. It’s not just about watching the show, it’s about the discussion after, the memes, the podcasts, being part of the weekly hype etc. I don’t know how else to describe it

Some TV shows just hit different when you have to wait for each episode.

That was fantastic. I know a lot of people will compare it to GoT and base their critiques/takes on how it made them feel compared to GoT (seen a lot of this on twitter already) but I found it pretty easy to just enjoy it on its own merits and I bloody loved it.

Agree to disagree. IMO it was definitely to be taken literally. For that matter, it's meaningless if it isn't literal.

As for why I'm opposed to it, I can't really explain it any better that I did, I think.

And let's not forget about that dagger that Arya used and it's origin.

You’re watching it, as a viewer, with the context of 8 seasons of GoT - do you expect the bloke who spoke that line to have the same context?

For what it’s worth, I still don’t really understand your issue with the line (not taking the piss, just can’t see it), but happy to park it there.

Edit: I meant the viewer wasn’t supposed to take it literally, by the way. I do agree the line was meant to be taken literally within the show.

Agreed, because this…

Fair enough but at the age of internet and streams 10 weeks is too long. Thats 1/5th of a year.

Maybe broke it down to 2 eps per week is the middle ground

Even Netflix are thinking of binning the binge model. Makes a series less memorable and impactful.
Everything will be trickled episodes in a few years

Yep. I was in it till that point but they just shouldn't be talking of that shite anymore. But I guess you can't take it out of a prequel plot.

I've been missing that model myself. There's something to be said about the anticipation.

Well they're gonna cause they've already shown more of it in the promo

I have no issue with it because knowing this world it's pretty clear that a lot of people are motivated by prophecy. Of course this wasn't included in the show but it's pretty clear that Rhaegar was motivated by prophecy in the main series but the show wanted to make it a straight up love story for some reason. I think the point of prophecy in general isn't that it's necessarily true the way the character interprets it but its all about what they believe and how they act upon it. Just look at Viserys believing that it's his son and this is why he keeps pursuing this thing, and driving his wife to her deathbed because he believes it has to be his son. I doubt Aegon's dream specifically spelled out "a targaryen has to sit the iron throne" because one, the iron throne didnt exist at this point and two, prophecies are never that direct. And of course a Targaryen would interpret that dream in a way that makes them the saviour. I don't think as the audience we are meant to believe what they say is actually 100% fact and that this somehow justifies their behaviour but we're meant to see how the character's belief in it makes them act. Or at least I'm hoping that Condal doesn't write it as that straightforward but who knows. Because it's definitely not straightforward in Martin's world.

I forgot how much the music adds to this show. Bloody fantastic.

Hopefully continues like this and explores Westeros more too.

Im with you on that.

Screw those people that binge it all in 1 night, upload spoilers instantly and can't help but tell everybody who does and doesn't care about it.

Letting it sink in over a few days, talking about it and then waiting excitedly for the next episode is such a better pay off.

I know it's a wig but I wonder how long it took to do that very intricate hairstyle for Rhaenyra's coronation and all for 2 seconds of screen time.

Thought the CGI was a bit sh*t compared to GOT but like the episode otherwise. Great acting, good characters, intrigued for the rest of the season.

Yeah the dragons looked a bit off otherwise it was a solid first episode. The actor who plays Viserys did a great job. Matt Smith not so much but i hope in time he will improve.

Watched it last night after the football. A very solid start I thought. Decent pacing and done a good job of setting things up for future episodes. That jousting scene was excellent. That POV shot *chef's kiss*

The show looked incredible for the most part, although some of the CGI was a little ropey at times. Perhaps they just lingered on a particular shot for too long. Sometimes a quick cut or only showing something for a second or two can hide some dodgy CGI. Not a big deal though.

Matt Smith is clearly the star of the show at the moment, but I'm not that sold on Paddy Considine as the king. He's a great actor, but he doesn't seem to have the gravitas that you would expect from a king of this family. I know he isn't in great health, but...I don't know. Not sure at this early stage.

Great start though.

I think that's intentional, he's not meant to be a "kingly" king.
