Higuain to leave Real Madrid

Realistically this is about a good a striker as Arsenal can buy. A little over 20m is a fair price. He's a good player that will convert their chances into goals. That's what Arsenal need as a striker. It's a bonus if he takes a big part in the build up like RvP did but it's not a necessity for them.

What exactly do you mean by that?

I imagine Arsenal can buy, with very few exceptions, as good a striker as they are willing to pay for. They're ever present in the CL, and generally very consistent in it, so that box is ticked. They may not have won the league for a long time, putting them below us and even Chelsea, but amongst foreign players their reputation for entertaining attacking football is a significant attraction. I'd say money is the only thing which separates their ability to attract players and Chelsea's, or even City's.

Remove money from the equation, and United are the only English team who have more pulling power for a foreign player. With English players it's harder to say, as there are more factors at play and a wider selection of clubs are well known.

Would they fork out >30m for Jackson Martínez?

Falcao extended his contract and left a couple of weeks after.

I don't think it's a Porto priority to sell Martínez, but with so many teams looking for a striker I'll only rest my mind after the first few days of September - after the Russian market closes.

Porto is unlikely to let him go too cheap but if someone offers the €40m on the clause he's going. And if it's a Premiership club offering €30m I don't think we'd be eager to sell, but I doubt his mind won't be turned.

English clubs are really struggling for strikers this window, aren't they?

Great news for us. We have RvP. And Rooney will probably end up staying unless we want to raise cash for a Ronaldo deal, can't see him leaving otherwise.

I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of Perez's mouth. They are probably waiting to secure the signature of another top striker before letting him leave.

They are. Chelsea, City, Spurs and Arsenal need one and most of the top ones have already been transfered somewhere else.

It's actually a bit surprising that Arsenal didn't go for Mario Gomez.

He was cheaper and has an excellent goal scoring record even in Europe(in which Higuain regularly fails).

It's surprising that Arsenal don't go for a lot of players. Wenger is an even more stubborn bastard than Fergie.

We'll see what happens by the first day of the season. My bet is zero signings. I hate to say that, but I don't see us signing anyone right now.

Wenger won't go for Gomez if he has Giroud in the squad. He'll see them as similar players.

I'm guessing it's the same reason that Bayern dropped him and then sold him. He takes chances well, but when he's not on the move in the box it's like playing with 10 players.

It seems like Gomez really wanted the move to Fiorentina. There were other offers reported (including Juventus, Napoli and I think Rummenigge said there were offers from England as well without specifying clubs though). Gomez wanted to be the main man, he didn't want a move to another top club where he had to fight for the starting spot. He just wants to enjoy playing, he wants to be loved by the fans. It wasn't about money or winning trophies for him. I think it got to him that he's not really loved in Germany, he was always criticised (imo very often way over the top) by german media and by the fans at Bayern and when he played for the german nationalteam.

I think he's a quality option to have in the squad at any top team, I would have loved him to stay at Bayern, he offers something different up front. But with the way football changed over the last years, most likely he won't start in the most important games for the best teams, so I understand his move to Fiorentina. He's won it all now with Bayern, top scorer in the league, league titles, cups and the CL. Why not simply enjoy playing now? I wouldn't be surprised if Arsenal called his agent (he's a clear upgrade to Giroud) but were told he won't move to England. Fiorentina fans are really excited about him and the club has a successful history with german players. It's a good fit for him.

Gomez is profiligate with chances yes, but he has an excellent record. Surprised none of the giant clubs went in for him (including Juventus).

They have Tevez and Llorente. No need for him.

I agree with everything you say there Balu. He is entering a different phase of his career a move away from the pressure and negative media in Germany will do him well. He is a great signing for Firoentina they where playing some f the best stuff in Italy last year and he guarantees at least 15 goals a season in that setup. I think the better teams want strikers who do more than score and in other departments Gomez is somewhat lacking, he has a tendency to drift out of games and he is not very mobile but in terms of goalscorers not many are better in Europe statwise. I personally will never forgive him for his performance in the 2012 Champions League final .

FFP and budgets are playing a part here as well. Teams are calling shit prices for their strikers trying to make an extra buck for a replacement.

PSG and Monaco seem to not care at all, they both seem to have signed two most coveted forwards this year (assuming Cavani finalises his move to Paris soon).

Wenger

“There’s a lot of money and not many players. We work hard but we are not close to signing anybody.”

Another expensive player "close" to Arsenal move that never happens? Surely not ;)

Madrid said they hadn't even made a bid last week didn't they? Sounds like same old Arsenal to me.

All of the reports I've seen say they'd basically agreed a deal with Madrid and then they raised the price from €30 to €40. Seems pretty sensible to take a bit of a step back, IMO.

OT but would've liked to have seen Gomez in the Premiership, think his skills would've worked well there. I didn't believe Pep was going to count on him. I like him and I think there's a lot to like in his game.

I think this is what happened as well. I honestly can't believe Arsenal (or Wenger) would lose out on good target like Higuain for the sake of a couple million dollars. Madrid obviously wanted more money out of the deal and Arsenal stood firm on their bidding price (which I thought was more than fair). He's honestly not worth more than 30 million at the moment, so the 40 million price tag was just taking to piss to see which one of Arsenal or Napoli were willing to win his signature. Poor move by Madrid as they may end up with a striker who's unhappy for an entire season.

I think they agreed a deal with Higuain and went to Madrid with a 30m offer, expecting it to be accepted. Maybe Higuain's people thought it would be accepted.

I think Real have gotten tired of folk taking the piss with bids for their players in recent years, such as Sneijder and Van der Vaart. Or they simply can no longer afford to sell so cheap with FFP.

Seems like part of the new post-galactico strategy to buy players with resale value and don't let them go on the cheap.

For 40m, Arsenal might as well bid for Benzema, which is more suitable to Arsenal style, actually.

Didn't Wenger say that you're finally ready to spend big? I thought I read it somewhere.
