No reason to doubt The Athletic's claim given the clowns in charge:

"Erik ten Hag was told he was getting a £120m transfer budget when he acquired the Manchester United job, which went up to £229m after a woeful start to the season"

£229m is a weirdly specific budget
 
Sergino Dest's potential move to Manchester United was derailed by John Murtough during the latter stages of the transfer window (Sunday Mirror... maybe they were four lines left in the entire paper after everything the queen...)
 
Last week, if you believe reports, ETH will have £70m to spend in January now the Express says it could be £100m. By the time we get to the window, we should be able to buy a small country!!!

The Express goes on to say: "Manchester United want to land even more signings for Erik ten Hag with a right-back, midfielder and forward next on the agenda for the club's recruitment team, reports suggest"

Do we ever get the feeling that newspaper "sources" are us, here on the Caf?

Do I believe stories in the press? Well, the performance of the clowns in suits who have replaced other clowns in suits gives me little reason to doubt this:

Old Trafford chiefs are split on transfer policy - Erik ten Hag wants to make more signings in January, but chief executive Richard Arnold wants to wait until summer. (The Athletic)
 
Do we need a 2023 version of this thread?

My muppet juices are desperate right about now and we're being fed scraps.
 
At least it makes sense in this case, money is going to be limited because of last summer and the incoming change of ownership it is what it is.
