Oh well if you say so.
I'm glad you didn't respond properly because I really couldn't be arsed with a daft internet argument
We can agree to disagree

Yes it's early here and I haven't absorbed enough coffee yet.I'm glad you didn't respond properly because I really couldn't be arsed with a daft internet argument

What's the issue?A belated if random question: has this thread discussed the whole sombrero issue?
Is that like the Indian headdress and bindi thing? Which are apparently hugely offensive for absolutely no reason other than someone got angry about it then some others jumped on the bandwagon.
What's the issue?
A university offered counselling to students “injured and affected” by a group of classmates who wore small sombrero hats to a tequila-themed birthday party.
The college has even offered offended students “safe spaces” and counselling to help them deal with the emotional impact of the miniature sombrero party.
Why is appropriation a bad thing? Even if it's done in vain, it's still not actually harming anything other than someone's pretend feelings.
The world is fecked
No because of the power imbalance between the Irish and The Mexicans. Irish Whiskey > TequillaImitation is evidently no longer the greatest form of flattery, even when people just want to have fun.
I wonder if universities will apply the same logic to St Patrick's Day next year?
Quite possibly both of those things. Having said that, it's certain types of people in certain types of societies that are involved with this kind of stuff. You could easily spend 3 years at university and be totally unaware of all the societies going on thereI've attended three universities in the last 10 years and I haven't seen a sniff of any of this. So I'm unsure if the media is just successfully digging out every whackjob they can, or whether it's something only affecting British and American universities.

Stupid question.... What is culture? And how long would it take for a new phenomenon to be considered culturally significant within a community?
I know what you're saying. I love the idea of personal identity but if we truly want a multicultural society - which I think we should embrace completely - then we all need to accept that the unique parts of our own heritage and culture should be accessible to everyone.
I had a lecturer who once asked us "what is black music"? At the time I just thought he was being a pendantic arsehole because no matter how we responded he would just keep saying "yeah, but what is black music?" but he had a point. Are Led Zep and the Stones "black music" because of their influence/sometimes theft of blues music? When they became popular in their own right did they stop becoming influenced by "black music"? And what the feck is "black music" to begin with? Am I not allowed to listen to Stevie Wonder now, because that would be a problem since he's my favourite artist since Michael Jackson. And then that brings another point to the argument...
Dunno lolYeah but what is black music?
Ask what her about it.I've not seen her mentioning how women consistently get off banging school kids but men get sent down (as they both should).
Men get longer sentences and have a slightly higher rate of imprisonment, but it's not like the women get off scot-free as you're suggesting.I've not seen her mentioning how women consistently get off banging school kids but men get sent down (as they both should).
Neither of these things are true. I don't know about the tumblring or whatever, but it's still unlikely.Don't these people see that they're doing more harm than good? It's like they've been brainwashed by Tumblr.

VeevaVee once posted complaining about the opinions of a girl he knows. What a fool, can't he see he just makes all men look petty and silly?*
*Exaggeration, but it's effectively what you're doing there.
There's no way I'm talking to her. I made the mistake of (actually very nicely) pointing out her condom argument made no sense.
Between who and who are they creating a divide? Are you suddenly going to stop supporting equal rights because a handful of women post things you perceive as being stupid? Because if that's the litmus test we're throwing every ideology under the bus. They get off a good deal more in every way. That's not what I was referring to though. It was how these types consistently pick and choose their issues to make things seem worse than they are.
And yeah, this new wave of not-very-thought-through feminism and young women posting buzzwords on every form of social media has come around because of Tumblr. I fully believe they harm true feminism (aka equality and acceptance) because they're creating hate and a bigger divide.
Sure, but it doesn't rile me up. Just makes me wonder why you give a shit? Not really. You can't see the idiocy in her condom/tampon argument?

I'm not sure your win on the condom/tampon dispute (will it ever end?!) is quite as comprehensive as you think.
And why are you expecting all women to be really clever and have thought out arguments about everything? Do men not do and say stupid things all the time?
..Do they though? Do they really? They create hate and arguments all over the show without actually attempting to solve any real issues. Between men, women, feminists who are embarrassed.
Take it to the "little things" thread then! What makes you think it's riling me up? Just wanted to moan about it.
What? You're putting words into my mouth.
Yeah, they do, and I moan about that too. But right now I'm having a moan at this.
Seriously, do you not realise you can place any ideology where you wrote feminism? But instead, you're focusing on this. And yeah, this new wave of not-very-thought-through feminism and young women posting buzzwords on every form of social media

Yeah. Have you not seen how mental public Facebook comments on these subjects get?

Sorry Boss

I've lost you now. What do you mean I'm focussing on this? This is the thing I've just seen and then just posted about and we're now talking about.
I can honestly say I haven't. I've got about 5 people who's posts show up on my facebook, and none of them ever post anything.
Scientists say it's now possible to unfriend someone on Facebook.
