Has political correctness actually gone mad?

Double standards.

He has a point about the double standards though he sounds like a bit of a tool by overreacting when criticising her. I don't think she did anything wrong. It's more the OTT outrage from everyone else that's daft.

He said something stupid, she felt awkward, he got criticised, he got fined and apologised. The story should end there.

With laughter or actual, real tears of genuine human sadness?

On second thought, I don't even know if you're joking.

Safe to assume she's never interacted with a man before?

To put into context why she is upset Melinda Farrell is a journalist that works for espncricinfo and has interviewed Chris Gayle in the past where, apparently, he made the same sort of lewd comments to her.

The whole interview is really interesting and I found this quote from her particularly striking:

Farrell: But we were discussing it, it is so normal that you don't say anything, because if you did you'd be jumping up and down all the time. So, we probably accept things that we shouldn't because nobody wants to be that girl.

It's blatantly obvious looking at the interview that she was uncomfortable from that start. Making someone uncomfortable is not a crime but to do it in front of the whole world put her in a really awkward situation; I thought she handled it very maturely.

It is clear that he is pissed off about her comments about wanting equality and then behaving even worse than Gayle. I was originally pissed that Gayle did that on live television, but after seeing the video it is clear that Gayle has been made to be a scapegoat in this particular incident.

He has done this before and in my opinion should have been punished more severely and the matter should have ended there, but seeing the reporter make a big deal out of this is indeed hypocrisy.

The video I saw showed a caption where the guy making the video admitted that he was wrong and that it was a different reporter (though pointed out the double standard that was still evident). I don't think McLaughlin has done anything wrong but the overreaction on her behalf is daft. Though I am aware that such matters are beyond the limitations of my meagre straight white guy brain.

Seems like a shameless cash in that horny males with not much interest in the actual sport will buy into. The fighters don't even look that impressive from the trailer, seems like a thing for models and women not good enough for UFC or any serious MMA division. Music on the trailer was god awful too, singer sounds like he's phoning in a radio talk show.

People who are PC and complain about everything make me giggle. In a 'jeez, you take everything THIS seriously?' kind of way. Generally, there is no fun with these people.

Yeah, the "PC gone mad" thing is a massive cliché at this stage. Especially when there are so many people claiming they're in the minority for being against whatever overreaction they're overreacting to.

A lot of the examples in this thread are less to do with PC going mad and more to do with stupid people predictably saying stupid things. Shite logic and oversensitivity are present on both sides of the PC divide though.

The BBC is now headlining who won a tennis competition for people in wheelchairs in Australia.
Which must be of interest to how many people? But they're in wheelchairs, best keep it in or someone will complain.

fecking hell it's madness I tell ya!

The NUS's LGBT rep is now no-platforming Peter Tatchell for being transphobic and racist. http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...dents-free-speech-veteran-gay-rights-activist

In 10 years every college debate will be between people that already agree with each other.

Cowling’s stance is disappointing to Tatchell. “I’m prepared to share a platform with people I profoundly disagree with, precisely in order to challenge and expose them,” he says.

Madness I tell you.

Wow didn't notice this one. Is this a serious post?

I'm constantly baffled by people getting offended at absolutely everything. Unfortunately, they can grab their phones and bully the offender into submission via social media.

He's got bipolar disorder so I think is more sensitive.

Yup. He quits twitter every now and then, without much obvious reason. Presumably just a way of coping when he's having a shit time and people saying shit things isn't helping.

I think this is how Twitter will eventually die, barring money-making failures. People will just get bored of the endless, faceless hordes waiting for their next chance to flay someone for making a joke and find other ways of wasting time.

Fry is a little bit Fragile. Surprising that he would join Twitter.

I'm a lefty, but I find all of this no-platforming to be childish and damaging to left-wing reputation.

The student union reps no-platforming people they disagree with makes it look like those on the left are so high and mighty that they cannot even share a room with someone who disagrees with them. It just gives the right ammunition.

Oh goodness, what fun twitter was in the early days, a secret bathing-pool in a magical glade in an enchanted forest. It was glorious ‘to turn as swimmers into cleanness leaping.’ We frolicked and water-bombed and sometimes, in the moonlight, skinny-dipped.

The great lengths he goes to describe his experience:lol:
