Do you think Fifa ratings are bogus and useless?

I think they get adjusted every week depending on players form. His stats fluctuate. Of course they’re useless to judge a professional football player. It’s a fecking game after all. I think I’ll stick to watching the guy with my own eyes for now.

I think in general the number is spot on. Everyone that watch maguire knows that his acceleration is the weakest among other good CBs.

I think his acceleration or lack there of, is being overstated. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s perfectly capable. Of course he’s not going to be the most nimblest of players but he’s an absolute brute of a man. For all I care he could move like snail, so long as his positioning is spot on. So far, I haven’t seen and glaring weaknesses, personally, so it’s a moot point in my opinion anyway.

It's definitely a weakness having less acceleration. But yes, he has long legs and physical present to compensate with.

Yes the price is insane. But he's there best defender, got very good stats, premier league proven. Can be captain material player in a few years. They know United are desperate for a defender. Maguire seems like a right now good defender to get with potential to get even better. Do we really want to be stuck with the same lot again come next season?

Remember that slick moment when salah nicked him with his pace and scored the goal? Capable of such moments for sure but he is the best we can get this year. Just sign him.

You said that Smalling + 1 would get us the same problem. So isn't Smalling + Maguire suppose to be an improvement over Smalling + Lindelof?

Anyway. Keown, Vidic, Puyol, Chiellini, Materazzi are not famous as "comfortable and composed on the ball" CB. But their partners were.
Yeah but Maguire + Lindelof is better than Maguire + Smalling. Odd to compare a mediocre Smalling to the likes of those, but at any rate the game has changed and with many teams using a high press nkw you need 11 players with good enough technique to player under such pressure. Smalling is a weak link in our team and we cannot persist with him or Jones or Bailly or any of them. Lindelof is the best CB at the club, and whichever CB comes in will partner him and rightly so.

Lindelof and maguire both have speed of thought with them along with the ability to pass under preassue. Have these two play in between two speedy full backs is likely to relieve a lot of pressure from our midfield leading to a better structure and not crumbling under a high press

That's what Pep found in Puyol-Pique partnership.. but You need two offensive minded fullbacks from both flanks that we haven't.

Shaw and AWB are more defensive minded, even pep sees Walker as CB more than RB.

Can you name them? And I mean ones who are obviously better from what we have and not another Bailly/Jones/Smalling level of 30m plus.

I wouldn't mind Rúben Dias. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing Axel Tuanzebe play ahead of Jones and Rojo. He had a great season at Villa. I think he could do well alongside Lindelof.

Not sure they are useless. Could be OK provided you compare players at the same age. Fifa Index ratings hardly ever seem to fall when player's performance declines. In a nutshell - older players with waning careers are over-rated. Some younger players are under-rated because they've played too few matches to be properly rated.

Smalling’s passing is a major hindrance but in terms of actually defending he is our best centre back. Lindelof is a mouse and very much a weak link in this team himself - he excels at absolutely nothing. It is quite embarrassing seeing the difference on the ball between Maguire and Smalling, but it is more embarrassing just how much better Maguire is in every aspect compared with Lindelof.

If we were to bring in Maguire to replace Smalling, I would like to see us bring in Alderweireld as well to partner him - an instant, massive improvement on Lindelof. Or even try Tuanzebe.

Shaw-Maguire-Tuanzebe-Wan Bissaka

If we sign Maguire, we need to sign a set piece specialist to get the most out of his goal threat.

I'd certainly love a home-grown CB playing for us at a level required and hope he's the real deal.

After a decade of Smalling-Jones failing. I'd be more than happy to see Tuanzebe play. And I think we have bigger issues in midfield, especially if Pogba leaves.

We need beasts in CB. Lindelof is ever improving and maguire is the kind of defender who is physical and good in the air. Good pairing i think.

Lindelof did ok last year, can't go any higher than that in a defensive unit that conceded so many goals, certainly not at the stage of being a definite starter yet for me. Smalling I have defended but I do think there were signs last year of a decline physically, most evident when playing back to back games.

Maguire, a lot of talk about his pace/acceleration, beyond that point I am still far from convinced that he is actually a good defender. Strong in the air yes, which brings some value, but I don't think his reading of the game and positioning is anywhere near as good as some want it to be. The whole leadership idea is hard to judge, doing some very eye-catching things doesn't mean you are a strong leader or organizer.

With Herrera gone and should Pogba leave, we have no midfield basically. I don't think Pogba will leave, though.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/h...anchester-united-tactical-analysis-statistics. It is a good analysis. After Ole became permanent manager, we were having very short breaks between the games. Young, (32 y.o), was tired and was leaving huge gaps.

We were playing Rojo, Jones, Smalling interchangeably. Under Mourinho, our players used to play man marking system and this had its consequences too.
In short, our defensive unit was completely disorganized. If one of the players in defensive unit (usually it's Young) fails, the whole back line starts to panic. However, the same players were excellent against Chelsea, Arsenal, and PSG.

A CBs pace is a secondary quality. Teamwork, calmness, composure, ability to read the game and organize partners are far more important. I don't care who we'll buy, scouting department, Ole, and money guys will identify the target and determine the price. I want a stable back four, a stable reserve back four and I want them to be drilled like nuts during preseason. Football is not all about transfers. Professional footballers at the highest level are not amateurs. Clubs pay millions pounds for them. They do their job. The manager should do his job. It's his job to outline a clear plan, drill the players, and motivate them. If they are not motivated, then sell them.

British players usually are (or used to be) less technical but they are less individualistic too. Everything comes at cost. The more you train technique when child, the less time for teamwork. The team play advantage comes from British coaching ethics: die for team, etc. And what we need in defense now is a team play. in the age of pressing, British football will dominate. 2 English finals this year. EPL is indisputably best in the world.

Plus, as I mentioned in my previous posts, our defense is too short in height. And we need a defender who is not afraid to carry the ball. Maguire ticks all the boxes. If United is able to identify a cheaper target who ticks all the boxes, it's fine. But who is that target? Another option is to teach Smalling to pass. is it achievable?

Can't see Pogba staying after his and Mino's comments. He have not even returned to trainings like other players.

He hasn't returned because he wasn't supposed to, yet. I don't like Pogba as a full package but he's a very good player and there's a chance we make amends with him.

Can't see Maguire being worth 70m. Yes you need a commanding cb but he is nowhere near VVD class. Even City seem to have a cut off point in terms of prices. Maguire only cost Leicester 17m in 2017. Sometimes it's worth taking a punt on a lesser known player at a lesser known club e.g. Hull. We did that with Robertson but missed out taking a punt on VVD when he moved from Celtic to Southampton for 15m which cost us 5 x 15 when he moved on 30 months later.

As much as people like to say 'leave' 'get rid' - Someone has to be willing to pay his worth. Same goes for Lukaku. Unless respectable offers come I see them staying as you said. - My only hope is that we sign two midfielders with or without Pogba

All clubs know that United need a lot of new players and have money to spend, so you will end up paying between 25% to 33% over the odds to get the players that you actually want.

If you sign James, AWB, Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Longstaff for around £250 million and sell Pogba and Lukaku for around £150 million, I'd say you'd have a much stronger squad next season and should be aiming for third, comfortably finishing in the top four.

I'm really starting to believe that we are not seriously in the market for either Maguire or Bruno.
I'm wondering if the Maguire bid was just an appeasement to the fans, knowing full well that Leicester wouldn't accept £75m.

In terms of defensive work this season, Evans was our best defender. However, due to our lack of good CM options, Maguire was having to dribble out with the ball and try to play in our wingers and strikers. With Tielemans next season this should calm down.

There's been nothing more in our local media regarding yourselves or Man Citys interest. I don't think there will be for a few days either, this will go quiet for a bit.

If it’s just PR then they should’ve bid for Koulibaly again, since Maguire divides fan opinion like mad.

Fan opinion should not interfere with club transfers. Most fans don't have a clue and most of the time, they base their opinion on YouTube clips or fifa.

Being heavily linked with players and then not signing them has never appeased anyone, it's a strange theory particularly when you could apply it to every single club on earth during every single transfer windows. Most rumours come from two sides, agents trying to build momentum around their clients and journalists making things up.

That's not my point though?

How many English players does the likes of Shitty, Chelsea and Liverpool field as first teamer?

Personally there seems a lot more smoke to the Maguire stuff than Bruno, honestly think that article with Fergie recommending him didn't come out for nothing.

and what if they'd excepted it?! How would we deal with that? ":nervous: only joking!"? We're clearly after him. Still far from convinced the Bruno links are genuine though.

75m is a very acceptable offer for Steve Bruce

Yeah wouldn't surprise me if it's just Longstaff despite needing a minimum of two mids this window.
