This!^^

Leicester are having a laugh turning down 70m for Maguire. Hes never gonna be worth that never mind worth it now. I think whoever gets Maguire be it City or Utd, they are going to be massively ripped off. I think if United are willing to pay big, might aswell go after Koulibaly and stop this obsession with English.
I agree and think we should part with more money to get someone who is a level above or not sign either and get Alderwiereld or settle for Axel.

Transfers don’t work like that.

Leicester are in a better financial situation than Dortmund for starters. They don’t need the money. Sancho in a years time could push for the move you just don’t know. Everyone in world football knows we desparate for a centre back.

Also Dortmund sold Dembele for like £120m. So Sancho will cost more than that anyway.

Also I don’t see every club asking Barca £100m for their midfielders because they signed Coutinho for that much. How much did De Jong cost again?

Nah, paying inflated fees is bad for the club in the middle and long term. If you are going to pay close to 100m for a CB, he should be a top top talent, someone like De Ligt. Maguire isn't worth it. My opinion, of course. At 75m he might be a decent signing. He is no VVD though, far from it.

You got a list to share?

In the Prem, two players I like are Ake and Diop. You could also throw in Alderweireld's name into the mix as a much cheaper option, and could play stop gap while Tuanzebe gives it a go.

If we're to look further afield, we're gonna take more of a punt, but a few names to throw into the hat would be;
Ruben Dias - Risk being a fee of around 50m and we've had some bad look from Portugal lately
Upamencano - Young, at a club that doesn't really need money, so probably looking around the 50s again, but at his age, inconsistencies are still there.
Cesar Montes - Young Mexican lad. Not seen a great deal of him, wouldn't cost loads and has done well, broke into the Mexican side so maybe worth a punt

Thing is, I'd rather Maguire, but you have to have cut off points. We can't give into the demands of every club or we'll be seen as a club that will.

He's Phil Jones, but with a goal threat from set pieces everybody has seemed to have worked out how to defend post World Cup.

He's slower than wind erosion, so bad news for anyone who was hoping that we'd play an energetic pressing game next season.

That would be relevant if Van Dijk and Maguire were on the same level, but they're not.

Not now they're not but at the time of transfer, I'd say they're very comparable. It's easy with hindsight to say that VVD is massively better, we know he transformed the dippers defence and has dveloped into one of the best defenders in the world, 18 months ago with a 75 mill price tag hanging over him there were alot of people asking alot of questions.

No he is not. He is a much better footballer/defender and doesn't get injured after every game.

What's all this 90 million talk about? Last I heard was 70 million bid rejected.

VVD was inflated at the time. People were laughing at the fee on here. I was probably one of them. It seems like people have lost their memory. Go ask Southampton fans how Van Dijk played for them in the last year for them. It was certainly not the level of a £75m defender.

I’m just telling you every transfer is different. Leicester don’t need the money, where as another club may need the money.

So what would we all think of a back five of:

................DDG
AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw

???

Still struggling to believe they made that bid.

Hoping they come to their senses and walk away quickly

Fast wings but worried about pace in the centre. A fast covering DM to replace Matic would be needed imo.

United should offer 75mil + 1 pound to eclipse VVD's fee, laugh, then feck off.
No, they shouldn't. By eclipsing VVD's transfer fee, this would make Maguire the most expensive defender. VVD might be the best in the world and I could name you 10 defenders better than Maguire. So by doing that, you set a bad example for the rest of the market and don't help the future transfer fees go down. That would be a mistake similar to what happened with Neymar. You think they can't find 5.01 more millions close the deal? I really don't understand why Leicester value him more than VVD. If not for braking the record fee for Skriniar, then we should go for Alderweireld.

That valuation is completely warped, I really hope we walk away now. For some perspective, Leicester are asking for more than Ajax want for de Ligt and more than what Bayern paid for Lucas Hernandez's buyout clause. You can't just put this down to inflation, we're being taken for mugs here.

I'd have major issues with such a slow CB pairing. If the full backs are to be allowed bomb forward we need at least one CB who can run

in all honesty - if I had to choose between buying Maguire or Hernandez for the same price, I'd buy Maguire twice.

This is what happens when the club don't listen to me on redcafe saying we should buy him when hull got relegated.

Clear as day he was a quality defender and was available for peanuts at the time.

I'd still like him and I honestly couldn't care how much of the Glazer's money it takes. Screw those leeches dry I say.

No way would they turn down £80m for him. As good as he is, they could replace him and address other areas with that.

Van Dijk didn't have vulnerabilities in his game like Maguire has now, I'd watch more of Maguire before trying to say they're very comparable. Maguire would be a big asset in the air, but defensively he has his weaknesses. The same couldn't be said about Van Dijk around the time Liverpool wanted him. We'd be foolish to pay over £70 million for him.

I also have the impression that 80 is what they re actually looking for

I honestly think we'd end up playing.

AWB Smalling Maguire Shaw

Having one CB with some pace is probably more vital than having 2 ball players. Signing Maguire doesn't really fix anything

Yes Maguire hasn't step foot in a champions league game, he's a competent defender but never has considered one of the best in his position. This is why the VVD comparison is pointless, VVD was the best defender in the league at Southampton.

Ndombele is the exact opposite, he's one of the best youth prospects in midfield secondly probably to De Jong, he's proven himself in the champions league and has a much higher ceiling for improvement.

Id honestly throw 100 million at Bournemouth for Brooks / Ake.

Second to De Jong and yet Spurs had no competition to his signature? Whereas De Jong was wanted by both Barca and PSG (and no doubt others)

VVD was definitely not the best defender in the league at Southampton (from what I can remember).

Ake for 50 or so million? Everytime I've seen him play he's been pretty poor.

From my knowledge of United (or lack of), it feels like you need a player to play out from the back, that would be Maguire. For us, we never had a midfielder prior to January who could dribble with the ball, so Maguire used to do this for us, roaming into midfield and drawing out the opposition before playing a pass.

Use your feckin Scouts ffs. There should be some decent defenders available for half the quoted price. How the hell is it so hard to find upgrades on our CBs.

The more days passed, the less confident I am in Ole and United.

I’m struggling to see the logic that we should buy Maguire because VVD was a success...VVD is a compete irrelevance in terms of how Maguire would do on the pitch for us. But as you say, every transfer/situation is different, so the only question really is, ‘is Maguire worth us paying £90m for (apparently)?’

I’d say absolutely not and it’s an absurd price that would possibly be the biggest overpayment in the history of football. He’s probably better than what we have, maybe would add some leadership/organisational skills but I’d say £50m would be verging on overpaying, never mind breaking transfer records for.

Been in work all day and too tired to trawl. Has anyone debated why we dont offer some players to lower the price. One of Jones, Bailly or Rojo ?

50 million is overpaying? Name a better option we could buy for 50 million.

I agree with what you say, however, I reckon we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. We need instant success. We unfortunately haven't the luxury to nurture someone, especially with the unreliable CB's we already have. We need someone with a totally different skillset than we already have...someone who can header the ball.

We already have young Tuanzabe, I don't think we can afford (time wise), to wait for a player to grow into the team. We need some leaders for now.

This is the only explanation I can come up with, in terms of this type of signing.

We should offer 100 million to seal the deal. One thing's for sure - he's slightly better than what we have.

Madness. Walk away. I don't think he's that good, and I fear he would flop 40M at most. There must be other defenders out there who are much much better.
What about Axel? He's naturally composed which Maguire isn't.
