If Maguire goes for £90m then that sorts our funds for this window

Yeah. Just offer 65 plus addons and ask the player to hand in a transfer request or else look elsewhere. He is not a WC player and we can't be taken to the cleaners by fekin leicester. The player has to play a part here if he really wants to come.

This is why focusing on PL English talent is a bad move. You watch Longstaff costing closer to 40m by the time it's done.

Sure but then there appears equal concern as to whether the player is actually good enough.

See my original post, I think he's massively under rated here, he would immediately become your best defender, your most obvious source of leadership on the pitch, your best defender in the air and he can run with the ball and pass. I think he's easily good enough to play for you.

You're Man Utd, it's the Glazers money, why worry over an extra 20 mill here or there if you get the player the club wants. People thought the VVD money was nuts at the time, looks cheap now.

Paying 90m for Maguire would seriously weaken our bargaining position when trying to sign genuine top players. How much would Dortmund ask for Sancho if we gave 90m for Maguire?

English core
I'm not sold on Maguire for the quoted prices but this is just clutching at straws. Napoli are not selling for anything less than £120 million and that's being if Koulibaly pushes for a transfer. He has said he loves Naples and has no reason to leave.

Statistically apart from VVD, Maguire was one of the best CBs in the league. Price is high but then again we also thought VVD's price was high. This is the market now. Koulibaly will run you well over 100mil as well.

Was reading somewhere that this bid was to hopefully price out Man City and not create a bidding war. More of a strategic bid than anything.

United should offer 75mil + 1 pound to eclipse VVD's fee, laugh, then feck off.

I think Maguire is underated by some people here.

He can run with the ball and pass, he is good in the air, which is something your defence sorely lacked last season, he's 26 and entering his prime years. He would instantly become your best defender and is a leader on the pitch, something else you've lacked. I wouldn't worry about the money, he's a great acquisition and age wise perfect timing for the step up to a bigger club.
For the money they want you want a world class all rounded defender in return, which Maguire isn't. His positioning and speed lets him down quite a lot, it takes him longer than it should to recover his position at CB, and is known for leaving big holes in the defence. He'd be our best defender if we did buy him, but he's nowhere near worth the figure they want for him.

Who knows, maybe he'll have a VVD effect on us.

Amazing that they turn down 70m.

I genuinely don’t know why we are trying to sign him. To be completely honest I think he is worth absolutely nowhere near that money. I think he will be a flop for the price but I really hope I’m proven wrong.

VVD was 75 mill 18 months ago, AWB 50 odd mill after just one season, Lucas Henrnandez 68 mill - prices are crazy, I reckon you'll end up with Maguire for 80 odd mill plus add ons and he'll be your best defender next season.

This is one battle I hope St Pep wins. Please please please choose St Pep over money.

That's what people said when they questioned the price of VVD 18 months ago, as already said here, that seems cheap now

Transfers don’t work like that.

Leicester are in a better financial situation than Dortmund for starters. They don’t need the money. Sancho in a years time could push for the move you just don’t know. Everyone in world football knows we desparate for a centre back.

Also Dortmund sold Dembele for like £120m. So Sancho will cost more than that anyway.

Also I don’t see every club asking Barca £100m for their midfielders because they signed Coutinho for that much. How much did De Jong cost again?

He's exactly what we need. Dominant in the air and excellent on the ball which will make us able to play more on the front foot instead of the endless hoofing and shit build up play from the back that we've seen for the last 5-6 years. Don't give a feck if it will cost us £70 or £80M, just sign him up.

As much as I've defended him in here today, I did say 70m would be the absolute max I'd be willing to pay. It's a solid bid at that.
At anything more, I would walk.

There are other defenders out there, cheaper that could be better than him, it's a bigger risk buying abroad, but sometimes you have to take that risk.

I see the sense in going for him. Even at the mental price they're looking for. I'd be slightly concerned about his pace i guess but think he's a safe bet to come in and improve us by a decent margin. Were looking for a Smalling replacement really and were terrible at defending corners and free kicks with him so his replacement needs to capable in the air first and foremost and Maguire definitely is.

@Dinghy gets it!

Out if curiosity for the regular viewers if Leicester, does he play predominantly on the left or right of the CB pair?

You got a list to share?

We already have 3 young defenders. Lindelof, Bailly and Tuanzebe we need to sign someone with experience now.
Bailly's only a year younger than Maguire, same for Lindelof in 2 weeks when he turns 25.

It is strange, the majority saying how 70m is too much for Maguire and yet are lambasting not signing 70m midfielder Ndombélé

Are we saying Ndombélé is a better midfielder than Maguire is a CB?

Yes Maguire hasn't step foot in a champions league game, he's a competent defender but never has considered one of the best in his position. This is why the VVD comparison is pointless, VVD was the best defender in the league at Southampton.

Ndombele is the exact opposite, he's one of the best youth prospects in midfield secondly probably to De Jong, he's proven himself in the champions league and has a much higher ceiling for improvement.

Id honestly throw 100 million at Bournemouth for Brooks / Ake.

That would be relevant if Van Dijk and Maguire were on the same level, but they're not.

That’s the sensible way to look at it, if 70m doesn’t buy him then move on. Our options shouldn’t end at Koulibaly, Maguire and De Ligt. Especially when we already knew a year ago two of those would cost a world record fee.

We’ve spent plenty of money on Premier League proven players like Lukaku, Sanchez and Schneiderlein that haven’t worked out. It’s all about identifying the right players whatever league they play in.

The day when the smaller PL clubs don't get the even share of revenue the better as I simply can't see any of them rejecting 70 million for a CB

Meet them at £75m plus incentives and lets get englands best centreback , and the most underrated defender in the league who l improve our defence ten fold , in the building

Spurs have just signed a guy for £65m, whos had two good seasons in the french league, cost £7m recently, and not an eyelids batted

Leave the figures to the business men fact is were alot stronger with Maguire on the teamsheet

i guess there are many ways to look at this. He is proven in the league would fit in immediately no language barrier. i also agree that 70 mil should be the cap. but then where do you go for a centre back?
