We'll accept 80m, I've said it for months. Maguire is a good defender who can carry the ball forward and pick out some excellent passes, but he's definitely not worth that fee. Unfortunately (for Manchester United and other big clubs), the smaller premiership clubs can now afford to keep their best players and this is pushing prices further and further up.

I don't think we want Smalling, Jones or Rojo as a player swap, why would we?

"They must be sick in the head if they want 90 million pands" in African man accent...But seriously, this is getting ridiculous. An average English defender for that price?
It’s a lot of money, but he’s better than average.

I dunno, how many people thought van Dijk would make the impact he did at Liverpool?

Ignore the money for a moment. Is Maguire good enough?

Probably. He’d instantly be our best centre back.

if an uncapped bissaka is worth £50m after 35 pl games last season and a handful of appearances the season before then I guess an England Centreback with 20 caps who is only 26 and has over 300 professional appearences with over 70 PL games then perhaps 70m-90m is the market rate?

cant help but think somebody like tah would be much better value but if we want english players we are gonna pay a premium

sky just put a stat up saying Maguire is the 15th fastest CB in the Premier League and out of both Manchester clubs only Phil Jones is quicker

It's mostly a meaningless stat as a player may be quick over 10-15 yards (the most important distance for footballers), 30 yards or 50 yards. Maguire is in the last group. I'm sure Matic is relatively quick too when it comes to longer distances but he is fecking slow over the first 10-15 yards.

No everyone know’s we’ve got £70m to blow on average. Just get Koulibaly.

Its evident that first preference is given to British talent. Regarding samp well they are a selling club who allowed Romero to go on free and sold Bruno fernandes on peanuts. That's why it's a good club to deal with
sure, I just meant I'm surprised Andersen would settle for Lyon. I like them, but if Andersen were so highly rated, surely bigger teams would come knocking?

And i meant the general obsession with english players these days, not specifically with United. Alot of english players get bigged up to be alot better than they actually are and a ridiculously big price tag and alot of unfufilled hype comes along with that.
that's fair. Also kind of funny because I've always got the impression (not only, but also here) that PL fans would marvel about foreign players and put down English players. Might have changed a bit, but then again I think England has actually produced some really good young players recently.

He would be an improvement, but sometimes a wheeliebin would be an improvement on what we have....

I see him as the best of an above average crop out there, who would at least consider us. That Rio or Stam mid 20s beast just isn't there in the market. We need a proper leader as well at the back, can't afford to get this wrong.

That's a genuinely surprising stat.

Do Leicester fans believe he's worth 70-90 million or are they just glad to get as much as they can from him?
we think you were told he's not for sale unless you wow us with a world record amount so either pay up or stop wasting everyone's time

Please Ole, let this one go.
Im hoping to God we arent paying more than 60 million for him which is even too much.
He isnt very athletic, not the best tackler and is slow. We are a joke of a club if we pay 70 million for a defender whose main qualities is in the air. At this point i will actually settle for diop given his athleticsm. I really need someone to tell me what Im missing with maguire because at this point because Im trying to see how he is worth more than 60(and thats english tax included).

Also if we are getting someone from Leicester for that amount it should be James maddison but even he too isn't worth 70 million.

I remember a lot of articles stating Palace want 60m for AWB when that whole thing started. This might be completely different but it also just might be posturing.

Had we initially bid £60m and they knocked that back, however, I doubt we’d have been looking to go higher.

I think we might have dithered too long and gone in with our almost highest bid.

I think Maguire is underated by some people here.

He can run with the ball and pass, he is good in the air, which is something your defence sorely lacked last season, he's 26 and entering his prime years. He would instantly become your best defender and is a leader on the pitch, something else you've lacked. I wouldn't worry about the money, he's a great acquisition and age wise perfect timing for the step up to a bigger club.

Smalling and Jones should already be gone because they not good enough. Bringing in someone slower than Smalling to replace him is not the answer.

Problem at United has been slow player turnover. When players are not good enough, they need to go but be replaced by players with no massive weaknesses. £90m for a tortoise? No thanks.
Jones I completely agree with but Smalling has been arguably our best central defender in four of the last five seasons. Not sure about your comment on someone slower than Smalling either, seeing as he's one of the faster central defenders around. Obviously the big problem with him is his inability on the ball though. He plays 'smart' enough that at least he rarely gives it away, but he does make it quite difficult to build play out from the back.

Jones, Rojo and Bailly are the ones we should have been looking to sell at some stage in the last two seasons.

Depends on whether it is 70m or 90m. 90m for Maguire is a bit too much.

If it's going to get to 80-90m then may as well go for Koulibaly, 70m is already too much.

United need fast CBs more than they need good in the air. Because United are usually attacking opps, so opps will be counter-attacking.
Q: When you're attacking on the break, what kind of a CB do you love to play against?
A: Slow CB like Maguire.

You want to account for age too with regard transfer value. Wan is 5 years younger.

I assume if this is true then surely the bid will be accepted? Apologies been at work so not had time to read through the thread.

no Sky's stat was Maguire was the 15th fastest CB in the premier League last season and only Phil Jones was quicker from either club in Manchester

Chris Smalling has on record gone as one of the fastest players at the club. So that’s just a lie.

Yea. They could be trying to tempt city to make a bigger bid.

Smalling and Bailly are miles faster than him.

Maguire isn't 'that' slow once he gets going, but it's his acceleration that is a real issue. He's fairly slow off the mark, especially if he has to turn around. Smalling himself suffers from that as well to some extent, but not as bad and also his top speed normally allows him to make up the ground he lost in the first couple of steps.

It is strange, the majority saying how 70m is too much for Maguire and yet are lambasting not signing 70m midfielder Ndombélé

Are we saying Ndombélé is a better midfielder than Maguire is a CB?

You guys are making out we signing someone with the pace of Blanc when he signed for us.

Was Vidic fast? Was Pallistair or Bruce fast? Bailly and Jones are fast. Maybe we should sign up Micah Richards.

As @Treble said, the first 5-10 yards are the important ones. If you are two steps behind after 10 yards you aren't catching up in time and if you do you are likely to bring someone down anyway.

Maguire is far from rapid over 10 yards, he turns very slowly. If we are pairing him with Lindelof then I'll be worried as they are quite similar in that respect.

Weird attitude you have on a United forum. I bet if Maguire stays on and you have a mediocre season, he will put a transfer request next summer and you'll lose him for no more than £50 million. Better take the money now and stop being so pretentious.
Well that’s obvious and yes by a country mile.
It's also €60 million and €10 million in add-ons for Ndombele. Leicester are declining £70 million which is a lot more money.

Depends on whether it is 70m or 90m. 90m for Maguire is a bit too much.

You're Man Utd, it's the Glazers money, why worry over an extra 20 mill here or there if you get the player the club wants. People thought the VVD money was nuts at the time, looks cheap now.

Maguire seems decent but world record fee quality?

I dont feel he's that good - is he the guy to lead and inspire our defence? I'm not convinced

£90m?

I hope Maguire enjoys playing for Leicester because nobody is signing him.
Yeah. Just offer 65 plus addons and ask the player to hand in a transfer request or else look elsewhere. He is not a WC player and we can't be taken to the cleaners by fekin leicester. The player has to play a part here if he really wants to come.

For an extra 20 million we should get Koulibaly not Macguire.

It will be 80 odd million with all the add on clauses.

Sure but then there appears equal concern as to whether the player is actually good enough.

At that price it isn't worth it. Maguire is not the only centre back that can improve us and there is no value buying from PL clubs

Another thing when people say he isn’t very fast they don’t just mean straight line speed. Watching him turn or shift his feet is like watching an oil tanker try to do a 3 point turn in a swimming pool.
