Jonathan Tah. Would cost half as much.

He’s a chance though, another Bailly, Rojo, Blind, Lindelöf signing.

Looks decent though, not as good a footballer as Maguire mind. Thing is, we’ve fecked up this position so many times since Rio and Vidic left that I’d much prefer we empty the Glazers pockets and bring in Koulibaly or Maguire.

Let's not talk about Maguire as a cert especially when you club him with koulibaly. Tah is very good on the ball if that's what you're refering to and his pace and physicality on a different level to Maguire. I'd much rather have him at the same price levels, let alone at half of it.

Have you watched much of Tah Varun? How many games are we talking?

Tah is nowhere near as good on the ball as Maguire. That you’d take him over Maguire for the same money completely baffles me.
We know Maguire is a top Premier League proven defender for a start.

So still no names?

The fact that VVD went for 75m means absolutely jack shit, give us names. If anything Maguire is a bigger name now than VVD was then, VVD was a enormous fee for a Southampton centre half. And seriously man, how much would VVD be worth now? £150m maybe? I think more likely £200m.

And remember we live in times in which Felix is joining Ath. Madrid for €120m after a handfull of games.

But who?

VVD certaintly wasn’t the best defender in the world when Liverpool bought him - but they went and bought the best player available and paid a big price for him.

Just because Kepa is the most expensive keeper doesn’t mean he will be the best etc etc.

Supply vs demand - I keep seeing people post that we should be able to buy someone better than Maguire, but no names - often blaming Utd’s ‘scouting dept’, as if there are a load of Vidic’s waiting to be unearthed in random leagues across the world.

Do you want me to name them all? Is it really necessary? If world record transfer fee can't buy you any defender better than decent one available, so be it.

Look I can name 10 or 20 defenders out there, but can you say for sure they are all absolutely not available or non-attainable at the price of 80m? Fact is, who knows? Unless we did actually bid 80m on all of them and are all officially rejected, there's no way to know.

-Koulibaly
-De Ligt
-Umtiti
-Godin
-Vertonghen
-Alderweireld
-Hummels
-Boateng
-marquinhos
-Skriniar
-Varane
-Manolas
-Sule
-Rudiger
-Laporte
-Romagnoli

Yes, I have. Not like full seasons but that's true for Maguire as well as I don't watch any other team bar United over full seasons. I didn't say he's as good as Maguire on the ball, I was saying he's very good at it so the drop off there isn't crazy and made up by other aspects of his game. Maguire's lack of pace is a big concern for me especially given we have lindelof as his partner and Matic looking to be our starting DM again who's slow as feck. I don't care much about Maguire being Prem proven because Tah has the physical attributes to play here.

That’s the shittest, daftest list I’ve ever seen.
I’m embarrassed for you @RedRonaldo

Now go make a list in the new RW thread and be sure to include Messi, Sterling & Ronaldo.

Tah’s national team career worries me, he’s a risk, simples. Another Bailly, Lindelöf signing.
Could be superb, could be ok, could be excellent but takes 1.5 years to settle.

Don’t forget to add in s couple of players who have just been sold, and then some more players from our rivals that clearly we can’t buy!

There's no way to know. Its just speculation.
If everyone thinks like you, many big transfer in the past won't happen at all.

-ahahah
-mh. Maybe? Might actually be the best deal you could make actually.

@RedRonaldo

-Koulibaly - 130m clause
-De Ligt - Unrealistic
-Umtiti - injury prone
-Godin - already signed by inter
-Vertonghen - unrealistic
-Alderweireld - Ole, high wages & the club is trying to avoid Sanchez
-Hummels - prefer Dortmund
-Boateng - come on seriously mate, he’s deadwood
-marquinhos - unrealistic
-Skriniar - if inter wants 55m on Perisic, this guy will be closed to 80m. Almost unrealistic with conte just became their new manager.
-Varane - unrealistic
-Manolas - seriously??
-Sule - unrealistic
-Rudiger - unrealistic
-Laporte - unrealistic
-Romagnoli - you think Milan will even let him go cheap?

Such a lazy list. I would have expect more realistic name and some players who is still in non top club. There is no point trying to sign the players if we know they are unrealistic. Trying to bid on players who are non-attainable will only be wasting time just like Ramos in LVG era.

What about his NT career? He's 23 and has some very good players with long NT standings ahead of him for Germany so far. He should be a starter in couple of years time.

I do take your point about him being a bigger risk than Maguire, that's ofcourse true but I see bigger upside there as well.

How about that

Maguire - Seriously???

Shite list already

Because its a list to compare with Harry Fecking Maguire, not that toughest list to get your name on it.
He shits all over him and as mentioned that list is a sack of shit.

So stones is a shit defender and Maguire is a top one? How did you reach that conclusion.
Anyone who watches the 2 would come to the conclusion that Maguire is the better defender.

 By watching them @Patrick08?

I mean, it's actually really easy because they often partner each other in the same side and one always looks better than the other at every aspect of defending. Plus, just for the fun, the shitter one throws in some horror shows and mind blowingly stupid errors just to make it even more obvious.

Disagree totally. If you think just signing new defenders and a winger will make us champions while still playing with the likes of matic and pogba in the midfield who provides no protection then you'll be up for a big surprise.

I didn't say that though did I? This side is miles off that and it'll take more than one transfer window to fix it.

As it goes, if Madrid offer a profit on Pogba I'd take it tomorrow. I don't think he works hard enough for the team. Matic unfortunately looks like a player who's legs have gone and as such he needs replacing. Losing Herrera is a blow.

At no stage have I said that we don't need to invest in the midfield. My opinion, generally is that it's going to take a few years to transition the side and on that basis, at least one centre-half and at least one full back is vital. At least one midfielder is equally vital, but I personally wouldn't be happy going into the season with three new midfielders and the current crop of defenders because they will get exposed. The majority of them have been given plenty of opportunities and simply aren't up to the task. I maintain that the sides competing at the top have a quality defensive unit.

Even if I accepted that a top class midfield could cover up for shortcomings at the back I'd say the chances of United being able to bring in really top class, proven midfield players is highly unlikely right now given no CL football and the other options those players will have.

So 80m for Maguire is the solution?
No wonder we've spent over 600m in past few years and still shite.

We are back in the circle. What other options do we have which clearly you have failed to give the solution.

Anyone who watches the 2 would come to the conclusion that Maguire is the better defender.
Anyone that watches the two would come to the conclusion that neither would be a significant upgrade on what we have . I would rather give Tuanzabe a chance than overpay for Maguire

Decent player, but we'd obviously be pretty mad to spend that kind of money on him.

Nar, transfer fees are going bananas, if AWB is a 50m player and Felix is a 120m player then Maguire is a 70m centre back.

VVD is now a 175m centre back.

Get used to it people.
Or the club could try to be sensible (for once) and not go spunking a truckload more cash on mediocre players.

£70m for what? Maybe a couple more points a season, if we're lucky. Not worth it.
