Absolutely ecstatic about this! The price is high but I think hes going to prove all his doubters wrong and be one of the signings of the season. Hes got everything we need in a CB and a top class attitude on top.

Leicester have really milked us here. But whatever. Move on. Get Dybala and Fernandes and it’s a solid start to our rebuild.

I've seen this type of comment a lot, realistically how much more money would you think needs spending given the players we have on top of those you've just mentioned? I mean we'd be looking at lining up with a side of

-----------De Gea-----------
AWB--Lindelof--Maguire--Shaw
------------Matic------------
--McTominay----Pogba--
----------Fernandes----------
-----Dybala-----Rashford-----

Obviously the weakest of the links there is Matic but I dont see an awful lot more work that would need to be done personally?

On the ball easily, defending wise Smalling is a couple of steps up from him imo.
Exactly. £80m upgrade should be a Van Dijk level step up. Just don’t think Maguire is.

Why the fixation on price?

Someone/something is worth what someone is willing to pay.

Are we stronger at CB now? Yes. Let’s move on to the next signing and strengthening.

Is that an £80m upgrade though? I’m so glad we’ve signed a centre back don’t get me wrong but is he that much better than Smalling?

Needed a bigger upgrade to be honest but I have faith in Ole and reckon he’ll turn out to be a good buy.

A year ago, no. But I believe Smalling started to decline last season and hasn't been as good as before, still a solid defender.

I'm hopeful, hopefully he can step up. For £80m you'd hope so anyway, but our big money transfers over the last couple of years haven't been great.

I’m not too fussed on the fact we’ve spent the money it’s just the fact we could’ve probably found a better talent for that price that would be a much more obvious upgrade such as Koulibaly or Varane

It is the price we have had to pay for a defender Ole wanted. People bringing up this defender and that defender from abroad, they are from different leagues and do not always look great in the hurly burly of the PL. VVD served his time and two other clubs in the UK before he joined Liverpool. He might have struggled if he had gone straight there.

Have those who dont rate Maguire actually watched him?

Baffles me, wont improve us much, what a comment, he l improve us massively

Hes aerially dominant especially from set pieces ........which is a big weakness
He can dribble the ball out from the back.......who else can?
He offers an offensive aerial threat......who else does bar Smalling every blue moon.
He can pass more than 6 yards accuratley ....what other centre back can?
He can pass to his striker, into space and not just sideways or backwards...who else does?
He has a voice and leads.....who else does?

Now tell me he why he wont improve us much?

Because he is relatively slow, particularly on the turn. And if we are intent on pressing high, that involves a high line for the defence. So if he is paired with an other average paced CB, how do you think that's going to go.

Now if you argue overall he is good enough to improve us enough to get top 4, maybe I'd agree, but I don't particularly think he has a great ceiling.

Glad we got this done and can now move along other deals. Improves our back line which let's not forget conceded 50 odd goals last year.

If we could add Dybala and Fernandes too then it will have been a very good window.

Happy days and finally done, look forward to everyone who has been hammering Maguire on here suddenly changing their tunes.....in 3.........2..........1

I think he is going to be great and nobody will give a shit about the price a month from now.

During the AWB transfer some wanted to 'find better value targets' and 'end this saga' because apparently he was worth 45m but not 50.

watching AWB just in preseason? Thank heavens we didn't walk away from him over a couple of million. He is already head and shoulders above any RB we have had in years

So we end up paying what they wanted from the start... why waste all these weeks?!

I don’t think he’s worth the money, but that’s the market these days. I think he’ll prove to be a solid buy who will add consistency to our defence. Also a goal threat off corners.

Because there's much more in a deal than the sum agreed. Payment structure, bonuses, player contract etc.

Also if you’re just paying what they been asking since two months why couldn’t have you just paid it then and he could have trained with us all of this month.
i didn't know Ed was supposed to know the future as well

Peered into the Leicester forum.. They seem quite jouyus that we've paid this sort of figure.

Some say if Maguire is worth that Evans must be 100m+. Others say they feel for Harry as we will give him some grief when we realise he's not all that..

Interesring take!

Let’s see how long the joy lasts when they have to spend £50-60m on a replacement.

It depends on the formation. But a solid CDM next summer and a RW. But we need more depth in CM. Fred and Perreira don’t exactly strike me as quality. So when we need to rest Pogba or if he is injured we need another CM of quality. But first we need to get rid of deadwood in the next the 12 months - Jones, Rojo, Young, Mata, Sanchez, Darmian, Bailly, Fred and replace them with more quality.

No more Young. No more Smalling/Jones on regular basis.

What a joyous moment.

We have obviously needed someone solid and dependable at CB for sometime. Maguire is all that. I think he'll do well for us.

The price is eye-watering for sure, but until the bubble bursts this is going to continue.

I'm delighted. Finally someone that is trusted to lead the line. Calm and composed on the ball and good in the air.

Fantastic signing. A leader. Will transform this team. Steve Bruce part deux.

I was one of the guys complaining about the fee couple of weeks ago but honestly considering our circumstances I don't give a damn anymore. Just happy they got it done.

Those who say, for 80m we haven't got a big upgrade please suggest who should we have signed?

There was only one option available and we overpaid by about 20m.

I'll repeat what I said the other day, in 2 seasons maximum Harry Maguire will be being talked about in the same conversations of top class CBs as VVD

Interesting. I don't see it but you'd know better. I hope you are right.

If city can play with a high line with Kompany who has less pace than Maguire then I think we'll be fine.

Actually Maguire is a lot like Kompany. Fantastic with the ball at his feet but suspect a bit defensively.

VVD was far better than Maguire when he was signed thats for sure. Everything he's showing at liverpool now he did at Southampton and at Celtic. We didn't sign David Luiz for world record money, hell none of Chelsea's centerbacks were ever sign for world record money.

What makes this whole thing laughable was that jose wanted harry last season and ed said no, now he just spent tripple that amount to get him this season.

I know you're just here to troll, but this is blatantly untrue. Last season when Jose was after him, most reports quoted his value between 50M and 75M (the quoted price increased as the window dragged on, obviously). So yes, agreed, we should have just stumped up the cash last summer and saved ourselves 10-15M, but to say that we spent triple the amount is a laughably obvious WUM job.

Don’t think we’d get both but either will make this a good window yes. Identifying most areas that needed improving and buying good, hungry players to do so. Still think we’ll struggle in midfield considering the players we’ve currently got and lack a solid DM

For £80mil I expect nothing less than a transformative player.

The pressure on the guy is immense. He can’t be better than the rest he honestly needs to be otherworldly.

He’s a good player and a welcome addition but people wonder why we are constantly taken advantage of and have a “United tax” added to every transfer, when we go through the same cycle constantly...play hardball and then as the window goes on and the desperation seeps in, we crack and pay well over the odds.

Leicester quoted a stupid amount and have played us perfectly to receive a world record fee for Harry Maguire...”world record fee for Harry Maguire” is a phrase I don’t think anyone ever expected to hear. I like him and everything and hoping he’ll form a good partnership but there’s no doubt that we’ve vastly overpaid for him.

What are you talking you? The 80m we just paid has been quoted since May. Trying to haggle for 5-10m doesn’t make sense. We just wasted 2 months doing it. We are ready to spend 70m and didn’t want to spend an extra 10m to make it 80m. It’s not like we were ready to spend only 40m and they are asking for another 50m on top of that.

If city can play with a high line with Kompany who has less pace than Maguire then I think we'll be fine.

You would think but then that is a credit to Guardiola and his coaching staff. Not only what you said but they play with only one proper DM too with Silva and KDB alongside. Point is a lot of the credit for that goes to the coaching and their philosophy of keeping the ball so defense doesn't come under pressure.

We are far away from that.
