Harry Maguire | Signed

anyone else beginning to think we'll be resurrected this thread this time next year?

The fact that he is playing for Leicester in pre-season means that we must be a long way off agreeing anything. I would suggest either we pay the fee Leicester are asking or we move on to other targets.

Whereas on the Lukaku front clearly there is something more substantial there as he is not featuring.

I mean we have 5 freaking CBs. Or even more I don't even know anymore. Maguire might be better than them but certainly not to an extent that justifies wasting half the transfer period on him whilst again ignoring positions like the right wing spot that we have absolutely nobody for.

The more We chase him, the more We give spotlight to Brendan Rodgers.

I cannot live with this. If 70m isn't enough, just sign another players. We have five CBs and Maguire isn't a huge improvement over them.

If you believe this then we either pay Napoli their fee for Koubilaly, which we have said we won’t, or we are better off signing nobody.

I for one look foeward to the six to ten games with Jones and Smalling playing together.

It's clear as day that Leicester won't sell for anything under their valuation.

Yes I agree, he is not really worth that. If we really want him we either pay up or move on to someone else, and stop wasting everybody's time with Ed's useless negotiation tactics.

We should move on and focus in another CB by now. We are still clueless and will end up without a CB if Woody continues to act like a clown

But we desperately need a new CB? How can you possibly think we can carry on and go into another season with that sorry bunch as our options. We might have plenty, but that's not a reason to not invest again.

We are more desperate for a RW. But that's my opinion. Lindelöf and Bailly/Smalling can do a proper job.

Right. Also desperate for CM. CB - we have 6 of them, a new one added this year with Tuanzebe. Spending £80m on a 7th is daft, when United really need Fernandes & Pepe, or another RW, first. It's about priorities. £55m is cheap for Fernandes.

I want to see us get rid of some CBs before we buy another

Just because we have numbers doesn't equal quality. Our defence is pants. We're stacked in that position, but stacked with average talent. Baffling to see so many think we should leave that position as it is, maybe because defenders don't make for as exciting signings?

It’s been pointed out countless times during this saga - we honestly don’t need the money.

I think it’s best for all parties if we moved onto another target, the only trouble is we don’t have time. At this point I wouldn’t be averse to just pulling out of a CB altogether, throwing that 80m into the pot for Fernandes and a RW, and just giving Tuanzebe a chance. It’s clear this deal is holding everything else up.

Nah, it is the same every year. Mid and end of the season a new CB is priority, come the pre season though, we need other positions more urgently, so we are fine, since Bailly, Rojo, Jones et al will come good. They of course dont. Rinse repeat.

For years the same pattern i observe here. I guess the numbers make people think we dont need CBs that much, but Jones, Bailly and Rojo shouldnt be counted. Part time footballers, part time patients and clowns. Then we have Smalling, our senior CB, who treats the ball like a grenade.

We need a CB urgently, Maguire is the best one available. Buy buy buy.

We are in dire need of a CB/leader in our defense. I certainly haven't forgot how bad our defending was last year. If the only reinforcement at the back is AWB, then we are in deep trouble. Maguire needs to happen IMO.

Midfield is mediocre. RW is non-existent; unless Greenwood plays there. Even if Greenwood plays RW that still leaves 1 CM = Pogba. Prioritise.

All that doesnt change the fact the defence is terrible too? We've got holes all over the pitch.

How are people not sick to death of seeing the same old dross at the back.

It will be done I reckon but it will be left to the last minute as they probably look at us as the direct competition for top 5 place and don't want to give us any advantage of bringing him any sooner....

We should just move on from this. We are not so desperate for a centre back that we need to be held to ransom by a little club like Leicester. Let them keep the big slab - he ain't all that.

I hope we get this over the line. I rate him and i can't stand the thought of another season of Smalling and Jones.

Seeing how unbelievably good Wan Bissaka is, I think this transfer is an absolute necessity. The back five of De Gea, AWB, Maguire, Lindelöf and Shaw is probably as strong as anything in the league.

Also I think Maguire has the potential to do exactly what AWB has done and step his game up to the next level instantly. Still think we’ll get him, thought Ole’s smirk when he said “let’s see who’s here on August 8th” in his post match presser was quite telling

We’ve tried the short term fix for 6 years, it didn’t work. We ended up with more players we can’t sell. If Toby should croc during the season, he’s done. If the club truly can’t find anyone, we should forget it and move on. Spending another 25M for a 8month player is the continuity of the wastefulness that have plaque this club since SAF left.

The problem here is we don’t have a plan B and we don’t want to take another punt on unknown talent which is fair. We might as well be patient.

We never have a plan B. A lot of the time, we don't seem to have a plan A. We need a centre half, that much is clear. We have an excellent prospect in Axel who probably would benefit from another season at Villa. Maguire is horribly overpriced and Leicester are unwilling to sell him, and I don't blame them for digging their heels in. We either pay the asking price or wait until Maguire forces the issue, which he might be unwilling to do. There's not a lot of time left to sort this out. Better to get a proven defender, albeit an older one, to do a job for us until we can get our act together and identify transfer targets. Of course, that probably won't happen anytime soon. If he gets crocked, that's tough, but surely it's not beyond us to structure a short-term contract for reasonable wages.

I still think people have become institutionalised to Smalling and Jones that they can't recognise what a better centre-back looks like in our team anymore and can't recognise that even if they aren't Rio or Vidic, they'll still be a massive improvement to our backline.

Maguire will be exactly that.

Anything to see both of the two stooges (three if you wanna include Rojo but I kinda like him for how rash and stupid he is even though that means he's shite too) minimalised action wise this year.

To be fair, I think we went for Hummels and enquired about Varane before chasing Maguire. I think Maguire is the plan B, or C if we also tried to get Diop.

That back 5 doesn't have shit on city's or Liverpool's but it's our best post Fergie, for certain
