If we don't care how much we spend on players, we are going to go from rich to under administration in the time it takes Pogba to knock out a sweet dance move after he scores a goal.

If WE don't care how much we spend on players, nothing will happen. If the people who actually control the money at the club "don't care about how much we spend on players, we are going to go from rich to under administration in the time it takes Pogba to knock out a sweet dance move after he scores a goal." I tend to think that the people who control the money at the club are better placed to know if we can can spend certain amounts on players and not go bankrupt. It's why I don't worry about transfer costs. If there is anything I trust Woody to know, it's how to grow revenue for the club.

We are being taken to the cleaners over this deal.
80mill for this guy is just too much imo, hope we look elsewhere.

Well the "we" in this context was pretty heavily implied no? :p

My post history is full of praise of the Man United finances, I'm one of the seemingly few people who are happy that Ed is in charge of the clubs cashflow.

My point is that we as fans don't need to be worked up on transfer fees. It makes no difference what we think. It's not like Ole is going to ask Ed to pay £90m for Maguire and Ed tell him no because the people on Red Cafe think it's crazy money. Our only concern should be would a player we sign improve our squad or not.

If Maguire is valued at 90m and Longstaff at 50, how much young Bebe would’ve gone for in the current market, we would’ve paid 25m for young Bebe nowadays? Back then it was 7m (iirc).

Tunnel vision? You mean we have a target in mind and are doing all we can to get the desired player? Yes bizarre stuff.

A target who is decent at best? Yeah we should really be going all out to get him and ignore any other possible centre backs because there ain't nobody better then Harry Maguire anywhere on the planet.

I say "to be believed" 'cos I actually don't believe that he's our only target in the CB department, but there doesn't seem to be much in alternative reporting... and £80m for Harry feckin' Maguire would be actually hilarious.

Given up caring about the price at this stage, I’d just be glad to get him in.

So 70m the other day, and now 60 +20

We'll be offering 10 + 90 in a few days.
What’s true is anyone’s guess, but it was reported that United tried a similar tactic during the AWB negotiations. If I recall correctly, it was said that United had bid 40M. A few days later, it was 35M plus add ons. The idea, it seems, is to potentially pay more overall, but less up front. I don’t think it worked with AWB, and I don’t think it will work with Maguire.

Well Palace apparently wanted £60m for AWB, then reports said they wanted over £50m at least, and the deal ended up being £45m + £5m, so it could be argued that it worked.

£40m first bid, then £35m + £10m second bid, then the third and final bid being £45m + £5m.

Maybe. It all depends on how you look at it. It’s a lot of posturing. At the end of the day, United are rarely going to get a deal. I appreciate that some fiscal responsibility is important, but can’t help but feel that United tend to waste a lot time with their approach to negotiations. I would guess that at this point, United know very well what Leicester’s bottom line is for Maguire. They can either pay it or not, but Leicester is very unlikely to move off their price, regardless of how many differently structured offers United may come up with.

Not much to choose amongst all 3 and 4 if you add Maguire.

Maguire has more in his locker than Jones, Evans and Rojo. That shouldn't even be up for debate.
There's a reason no-one's trying to sign Evans for colossal money for instance.

I still think Smalling has some better characteristics in some ways, but him and Maguire would work for me. less set on Lindelöf being involved. I still think he's a bit of a Swedish Jonny Evans - average to poor in all aspects of his game.

I still think that Maguire is massively overhyped from a few decent England games last summer.
We need a world class centre back and I just don't see it in Maguire, a slight improvement on what we have.

I honestly for the life of me can't understand this transfer, I'd sooner have Nathan Ake in a heartbeat over him for half the price!

Ake had a blinder of a season last compared to Maguire.

How have we ignored other centre backs? There were numerous reports in reliable media that we went for De Ligt and Issa Diop before going for Maguire.

Think its Ole wanting him as well, at least he's OK with signing him I'm sure. Change of transfer direction wanting home grown talents.

Ake is homegrown as well.

EDIT - Actually, perhaps not. May be getting him mixed up with another player.

Both of which seem to have fallen by the way side media wise in the last few weeks from what I've seen?

I'd rather play Tuanzebe than sign Ake for £50m. I do see the benefits of signing Maguire but would prefer Tah, Konate or Milenkovic who would possibly cost around the same as Nathan Ake ?

You seemed to be suggesting that we hadn't even looked at anybody else though, when there is pretty reliable evidence that we have.

I think Diop would be the smartest choice. Spending a big fee on him would be more 'acceptable' to our support and the media because at least there is clear potential and he has great pedigree with his progression through the French youth teams. I think people underrate how unbearable the pressure would be on Maguire and our club in general if we break the world record fee for him. The media and supporters of our rivals are going to be salivating at the thought of him flopping and considering he actually has very little top level experience for a 26 year old I'm not convinced he could handle it.

If he comes I can see him probably becoming our captain by the start of next season.

Problem is media overrate english players and non English supporters underrate him. Truth is in the middle though.

Being non English, i think he would be a good signing. He will bring the much needed calmness at the back and aerial strength to us. He still has one more gear to go . Will have to see if he will make it or not. Unless Varane or players of that calibre is available and willing to come, there is no signing better than him for us now.

Yes, we are overpaying by about 30m but If he help us win the points we lost against bottom teams, and we get the top 4 then the money would be well spent.

70 millions. God damn it. Can vaccinate entire nations with that amount of money. No wonder football is going further and further away from fans.

Wes Morgan is 5th choice, being better than him isn’t much to shout about
So your 5th choice CB played 20 league games last season? How many did the 3rd and 4th get, let alone 1st and 2nd? Or do you play with 3-4 CBs at the same time?

And damn, learn how punctuation works, I have almost never seen you use a full stop to end a sentence properly.

He’s 5th choice now, also one of the 4 ahead of him was out on loan last season

So according to that, Morgan was 4th choice last season and still played 20 league games. It means Jones will get at least 25, so he'd be worth taking at your club, considering one of your other main CBs is Evans.

Also, I will be correcting your punctuation mistakes every time you try to converse with me from now on. You're a native to the language, respect it more, damn it.

He only played that many due to Maguire having an injury and Soyuncu having problems settling in so he was given more time before being used.

Unless this is an English essay being marked for some sort of qualification I could care less if my use of punctuation offends you, get over yourself and stop being so pompous

Sure he did, after playing 6 league games, Soyuncu will suddenly be totally ready for the PL next season. Him and Evans won't be relegation-level CB partnership, not at all.

Even if you don't respect yourself enough to write correctly, at least make sure to actually follow the forum rules which clearly state proper writing form is required.

You've spent three posts moaning about him not using a full stop at the end of a post, it's really not a good look pal

You clearly have no idea about our squad, why should you, so do yourself a favour and stop talking about things you don’t know

Maguire is the one we need.I first saw him play in Hull and was impressed with his ability on the ball for such a big man, calmness he has,but also his strenght, size, aerial ability is what we miss. For his questionable pace,he compensates it with very good positioning.

Except Smalling who is good in the air not one other centre back we have can head the ball but Smalling is shit on the ball, clumsy almost breaks leg when trying to pass and also is not strong enough, gets bullied by much smaller players which is embarrassing and always on the verge of a yellow card and with VAR coming, many problems come for him.

Ole, - quality and speed is a big thing. I wonder how Maguire fits in all that

The arrogance of our some fans when talking to an opposition supporter about their own team astounds me at times.
