I doubt, we will succumb to the unrealistic evaluation of Leicester, the deal will include heavy unrealistic Addones if we ever reach the price quoted, other wise we will move on.
Unrealistic valuatuon? I think you'll find it's very realistic in the current market forces and I bet it will be paid if you are to get your man.

If you think HM's fee is unrealistic please justify £50 million for AWB? ie what experience, international honours, attacking threat , top stats he posesses to warrant that ludicrous fee? Just to clarify I think the majority of transfer fees are ludicrous nowadays though £15 m for Maguire from Hull was decent.

£90 million is not realistic. It would be for one of the best centre backs in the world though. £70 million is more than fair.

Hi RedCafe,

I thought I’d join up, as a Leicester fan, to offer my opinion on Harry Mags. Unlike some other Leicester fans, I don’t rate him as highly as others do. I believe his value and the perception of him as a player was inflated after a good World Cup. Personally, for £70,000,000 I’d take your money.

Firstly, the positives:
  • Great in the air whilst defending. He’ll win 70% of the his aerial duels.
  • He’s a big unit and physically imposing.
  • Calm on the ball.
  • Solid passer for a defender. Can bring the ball out from the back.
  • Decent positional play.
  • Long range passing is good.
Weaknesses:
  • Agile he is not, he turns like the titanic.
  • These marauding runs he goes on, often leave massive gaps in the defence. If we get turned over, he can’t get back. He has a tendency to just keep going until he loses that ball, rather than release it.
  • Speed - he’s slow and cumbersome.
  • He’s prone to a mistake. Very prone. For a defender, it’s costly.
  • He isn’t a leader. Johnny Evans is our best defender, he’s made HM look better.

I agree with this. Good summary. I would however suggest that a marker of a good central defensive partnership is one where the qualities of both defenders are enhanced. Rio/Vidic partnership is a good example. I think Maguire will improve us defensively but he’ll have to learn to adapt to ensure he doesn’t get caught out when we play a higher line.

This has been the most notable flaw in his game whenever I've watched him, repeatedly brought attention to it on here. I haven't see many centrebacks that leave a hole in the defence as regularly as he does.

If Maguire was to come.

Starters - Lindelof Maguire
Backup - Rojo Tuanzebe
Sell - Two of Smalling, Jones or Bailly

I'd call it a day on Jones and Smalling

Start the season with Lindelof, Maguire, Rojo, Tuanzebe and Bailly. Jones and Smalling have had some decent seasons between them but never reached the top level required. Give someone else a chance and let Lindelof and Maguire be our new leaders at the back and also in the changing rooms.

Why keep Rojo? He’s the first gone for me!

I’d have Maguire, Lindelof, Tuanzabe, Smalling, Bailey as our five to keep.

Smalling's arguably our best defender and at the very least our second best one, be mental to sell him before any of the others. Rojo and Bailly should be first out the door, they're sick notes who've been awful whenever played.

I rate Smalling better than Jones as a pure defender but if we are intending on playing a system that requires centre backs who can play the ball out then he's the oddest one out.

I was thinking I'm the only United fan who thinks Smalling is the best of what we currently have.
Lindelöf seems to suddenly be thought of as excellent, when for me, he's just moved up a notch from liability.

Smalling and Maguire would give us a lot of aerial power in a combo for the first time in years, as well as Smalling's pace back there.

Either way if Maguire is really pushing at his end for the move, all the better. Wouldn't surprise me, as he's seen the move collapse last summer, if it happens again he might have permanently missed the boat.

That makes three of us.

The fact that United are the most profitable club in the world, sell their players for huge sums and now don’t want to ‘cough up’ what he’s worth to us is a bit disrespectful

I agree, Jones and Rojo need to leave.

Rojo and Jones should have been sold ages ago, hopefully this works out.

Keep Rojo over our most consistent CB? Smalling is a good option.

Pretty thick to consider keeping rojo and bailly over smalling - unless you just really dont like his hair?

Just because you set a ludicrous sky high value, doesn't mean even a wealthy club will just jump in and match it. There will always be a negotiation period.

And did I miss us selling a player for a huge sum?

I can't remember the last time we sold a player for even more than we'd bought them for? Ronaldo?

We will need incredibly mobile midfield if Maguire and Lindelof are our starting CBs for the next season.

Agree with this. I'm tired of Smalling and Jones.

I just like his aggression and he's left footed so good for balance. I appreciate many don't like him but I think he would be a useful player with a run of games.

Count me as another that rates Smalling as the best CB on our books right now. Not because I rate him all that highly, but because this is England and Lindelof is still weak aerially.

I don't rate any of Bailly, Jones, or Rojo at this point, they're all nutters made of glass.

Maguire and Smalling strikes me as a better combo than either with Lindelöf.

Rojo needs to be first to go, I wonder if anyone disagrees with that? As well as being pretty average, like some would argue the others are, he makes Jones appearance record look steady!

I can't stand a player that's trained as many football sessions, and played in as many matches as he has.... and he still looks like a deer when passing the ball. He takes 5 strides with the ball just to turn around and lay it off to the other centre back.

His footballing ability is disgraceful. Should never have been and should never be a Manchester United player.

Smalling is a terrible footballer and limit us badly. If we want to be a top team again he should be nowhere near our starting line ups. If we buy Maguire there's no point to continue to with him tbh.

the press has said he's told the club he wants to leave once a week for the last month
Really?

The press have been reiterating that whilst he is open to the move, he's not pushed for one. Although I don't think anything will come of it this coming week, this report suggests Maguire has actually expressed a desire to Rodgers.

Sounds like made up horseshit....but certainly a different angle to previous reports.

Consistant at what? Looking shite on the ball? Ever seen Mike spray a 40 yard ball? Ever seen him manipulate a ball with the ability that a professional footballer should be able to? Nope. Never.

its been about a month yes, once a week when its all gone quiet one of the tabloids suddenly say'd he's told the club he wants to leave then the rest report the report

I agree. People rate Lindelof so highly just because he isn't Smalling or Jones. He's not had a single dominant performance in the two years he's been here. How anyone thinks Rojo should still be here is baffling.

I think the trio of Maguire/Smalling/Rojo works nicely because we can adapt it easily to the opposition. Play a team with a big physical striker play Maguire with Smalling and don't have to alter defensive shape to hide Lindelof. Otherwise, Lindelof and Maguire for the majority of matches.

Rojo definitely needs to be the first out. He's the least reliable out of the group, which is quite an achievement.

Yep. At some point you've just gotta put them down. As loyal as they have been. They reached their ceiling years ago.

They are not loyal. Neither is young.

Players who have nowhere to go but down stay and don't cause trouble because they are stealing a living. Not because they are loyal.

Maguire will himself by the looks of it get the deal over the line, we've put the bid in he reportedly wants out, they either sell him, or he stays at the club, knowing they stopped his progression in football?

I think this one will go to the wire, someone will have to bend, and knowing Woodward he won't?
