We look so much better at the back without him, the pressure of captaining United had turned him into a nervous wreck and this was infecting the full back line.

He needs his confidence slowly building back up by getting some starts in cup games, and he will then eventually be a strong squad player. Wouldn’t want to see him as a guaranteed starter though again, that ship should have sailed.

Imagine bumping the performance thread for someone who didn't play just to have a dig at them. Be better, people
Oh get a grip. We've finally achieved a couple of good defensive performances and it's obviously no coincidence that Maguire was dropped. Fans are relieved he's not starting and have every right to be. And nobody has been too personal.

To the point. As a fan i find it great that finally player selection is based on merit.

Unfortunately, we have only Lindelof as a backup and him. I hope that we start looking for a new CB soon and that Maguire has a good tournament so we can sell him in January. I am one of his biggest critics but it's bonkers that people want to sell him now. With a World cup in the middle of the season THERE IS NO WAY we can survive the season with only Varane, Martinez, and Lindelof as senior CBs. But we are not linked to CBs anymore. I do see a possibility when we sell Maguire, we go for Timber again. After all I m not sure our scouts have anyone in mind, apart from Torres who would only come as a starter after all.

A lot of the abuse he gets is pretty personal. A lot of fans seemingly blame him for the fee he cost too, which is odd.

Do you put that on your CV?

Sitting deep, De Gea not playing out from the back and the forwards and midfield working harder are all bigger reasons we've improved defensively in the last two games than the dropping of Maguire. And even then we've conceded 34 shots in those 2 games.

Hopefully we can maintain it when we attempt to play more expansively again.

Hope Martinez , Varane and Lindelof are fit. Maguire shouldn’t start any games except cup and Omonoia and Sheriff
The problem is when Varane inevitably gets injured we need someone strong in the air. Lindelof and Martinez would be a massive risk with both not great in the air. Maguire for his many weaknesses is very good in the air. Still, would be ideal if he could get a move to somewhere like Leicester and United moved for another towering defender able to play with Martinez.

Martinez is proving otherwise currently.

Either way, Maguire is putting up impressive performances from the bench, it's the best I've seen our defence for a long time.

Do you put "Pointless comments" on your CV?
You were so proudly boasting about the fact. Not only are you a critic of Maguire's, you're his biggest one. In the world. Ever.
It's a strange claim.

Where did I boast about it? My point was that even If i dont want him here long term, its too late to sell him this summer. Obviously, I haven't me all of Maguire's critics in the world and I crowned myself as one of his biggest critic. It was a hyperbole to show emphasis of how much I disagree with people wanting him out now, no matter if i dont like him at all.

Well, it would be but he didn't say that. He said 'one of his biggest critics' .

I think people need to take a step back - this Maguire thing is becoming an obsession to people. It seems very unhealthy.

Its only been 2 games, the CB's will be rotated soon enough and Harry's demise will be put on hold.

As per usual with the media/fans everything is in extremes.

Football is a team game, Harry will be fine! he might even be thankful for a few matchdays on the bench.

We have 2 games a week pretty much most weeks now so he’ll get games I guess. Just hope it’s the Europa league ones.

Not sure I get this; players who cost massive/world record fees - especially ones who clearly don't warrant such fees - will always come under additional scrutiny, due to their fees. No one is blaming Maguire for what he cost; they're blaming the club.

Yep naturally people think we ridiculously overpaid for Maguire and obviously his form was awful last season. People do seem to genuinely hate the guy personally though, even truly despite him. The board has rightly got loads of flak for the awful transfer, but there is definitely an element of conflating the person and the fee, people blaming him personally for it, it's odd.

Well, his performance on the bench has been flawless. No howlers.
Be better Maguire, if u return to the pitch.

Pretty damning for Maguire. I don’t think players should involve themselves in team selections but it’s ridiculous that it took so long to drop him when it was clear he’d become a liability to the team.

I find it a little interesting that ETH hasn't brought him off the bench for the last 5 minutes in either of the last 2 games. Considering we were only a goal up in both, could see other managers bringing him on as a 3rd centre-back sure things up/head stuff away.

Ok maybe its not interesting, but it's definitely something that happened in life.

Same with Shaw. Neither have obviously done enough to earn those minutes.

Hard to drop him when Varane was injured and the rest were as bad as Maguire

I think it would’ve been better for him to take him out of the team. Bailly and Lindelof were both available, not to say they’re better than him but I don’t think I’ve seen either make as many mistakes as he did and it became obvious that he was struggling for confidence. Playing him week in week out only destroyed his confidence further and at this point I’m not sure he’s got the mental fortitude to recover.

We did that in the game against Arsenal and it probably spooked Rangnick as he realised Maguire is better than them even as poor as he was

It is damning for Ronaldo, explanatory for Maguire.

Maguire was one of the league’s best defenders in 20/21. Ronaldo comes in, and the league No 2 strengthened with Sancho, Varane and himself soon collapses, and Maguire turns into a shadow of himself. What is the factor? A player who makes a clique go the boss to attack teammates behind their back. Another player who is undermined and backstabbed by the worlds greatest player. Who is this more damning for?

There have quite clearly been some sort of split in the team last aeason, and numerous times Ronaldo + various players and Maguire + English players have been pointed out. Eric ten Hag reportedly struggled with cliiques at BM II when they won the reserves league.

What impresses me about Ten Hag now, is that he seems to have learned from this. He takes the central players involved in a split, gives them a fair chance so noone in the cliques can complain, then puts them on the bench immediately at the right moment after a loss, and the team is rewarded by a win, rendering any rivalry absurd and bonding the team again.

There's a lot of justified suspicions that Ronaldo's arrival played a large part in us collapsing last season. It's not necessarily surprising either. We know he's a big ego, we know he cares for himself above the team, we know he can throw tantrums and say stupid comments when he doesn't get his way. Drop that kind of personality in the middle of a fragile team with a massive contract, and we get the kind of results we saw last season, as well as the infighting. Maguire seemingly being one of the main casualties.

This is bullshit, unless Ronaldo or Rangnick leaked this how would anyone know?

The question needs to asked is, Was CR7 wrong? Have we preformed better with or without Maguire?

Are you seriously going to blame Ronaldo for Maguires collapse ? Grow up.

This club cries out for winners and as soon as one walks in then he is to blame for the clubs mental weaknesses. Maguire is the clubs captain, if he can’t handle criticism from the greatest player of all time then he doesn’t belong here.

Get a grip.

Ronaldo WAS a winner, now he is just a toxic whiner, nothing more. Sooner he fecks out of the club the better. Ronaldo's fanboys should get a fecking grip.
