Simply, he can't play in this system. I don't want to go into his defending abilities but for ETH's system you need to be mobile which Harry is not and never will be.
We must sell him while we have chance.
We have enough defenders for cover and we can always in january buy new one if there is a need

Well if there was ever proof needed of the gulf in class between Maguire and Varane then last night was a great example. The speed of Varane across the ground to sniff out chances was so refreshing to see. Though it's not only his running speed that's so refreshing but just the speed of moving his feet; when there are lose balls or any unpredictability about the box Maguire looks like he's stuck in the mud, so awkward and clumsy when trying to react to the unexpected. Varane and Martinez were both so quick to react a few times whereas some of those loose balls about the box would have Maguire looking to make another contribution to his comedy compilations.

Truly hope this is the start of him not being seen as the automatic starter.

He will still be useful for us, especially when we play away from OT where teams will be playing long balls and targeting the left side of our defense. But his days as a starter as surely numbered.

Which defenders do we have to cover outside of Lindelof? Axel and Jones haven’t been seen near the first team for a while, surely you don’t mean them?

After being benched as captain last night has he got enough ability to displace Martinez or Varane?

The answer is clearly no.

He has the turning circle of a tanker, hes slow to react to being ran at, and looks like a deer caught in headlights when players do run at him. A player who only plays well in a system where he has players around him to make up for him deficiencies is not a good player.

The best thing for him and his chances of getting a place at the World Cup would be to seek a move.

The best thing for me would be if he never wears a United shirt again as captain.
No leadership qualities nothing great ability wise. And how many times has he been relegated?

The answer is 4. Two of the teams he played for in one season got relegated, a record no other supposed top defender has.

Face facts folks he’s shit.

Exactly the type of game where we’ll need speed in the defence when we press high against a low block…

He doesn't get in ahead of Varane and Martinez obviously, but the best thing for him is to be left out while we regain our confidence and form, then slowly re-integrate him back into the first team to rest Varane/Martinez.

If Chelsea are seriously after him (they could do a lot worse, because he's super comfortable in the 3 atb) we should just take the money.

We should then just spend half of it on a quick and athletic CB who deputise for Martinez.

'Mobility' and 'agility'. Without saying anything directly Ten Hag damned Maguire.

Maguire is a good defender. However, he is never going to excel in a system that exposes his lack of pace and ability to get about the pitch.

Put Maguire in a low block team, which is very compact, he'll look great. However, expect him to get up the pitch, squeeze high and it just exposes him.

The fact we paid £80m for Maguire is an indictment of our recruitment. Another good player, signed at random, without any thinking about how he might fit into a larger whole.

If I'm Maguire I'm looking for a move to a team with a defensive coach e.g., Mourinho, Allegri. He's never going to be a Ten Hag player.

People have every right to talk about him - he's our captain and dropping him was a huge call from EtH.
This call should have been made a year ago - remove captaincy and move him on. The team are far better without him, not good enough.
I am actually glad he was dropped. hopefully we have just like last night better performers in order for him to not be needed. BUT it was one game in which we could have easily shat the bed, I'd be a bit more patient and let's hope he is not needed sooner than some of you think.

I noticed the same. Similarly, he said that he chose Rashford to because of his pressing abilities, which could be seen as a dig at Ronaldo.

I think he's had his chance (more chances than necessary imo), time to try a new partnership - even if it takes time. There is already a foundation for a great partnership between Varane and Martinez, i'd rather we give them time rather than go back to a failed player who isn't good enough.

You don't think that we should try to improve on Lindelof or Maguire in the near future? With Varane recent injury record, it's not wise to expect him to not miss a dozen of games and I personally don't believe in Jones, Tuanzebe and Mengi. Maybe Mengi will show something because he is only 20 but I wouldn't rely on it.

My logic regarding defenders is first pair, second pair and young defender as 5th option.
First pair we have, Lindelof is solid (well, at least for me) 3rd/4th option and this is excellent season (because we play EL) to resolve are Tuanzebe and Mengi good enough or not.
Jones and Maguire can and should feck off.

Absolutely i agree that it would be perfect to have some quality defender as 3rd option but i am against spending another 40-50 mil. Our scouts should finally step up and find cheaper defender perfect for that role.

Having said that, the most important thing is to sell Maguire and Jones first. Selling Maguire would be like new signing. And, despite i am delighted with ETH, i am baffled with his decision to keep Maguire. What is the point in having 80 mil worth, 29y old captain in team who doesn't even fit in your system? I mean, if Chelsea is really interested then we should say yes even before they say their bid;
Chelsea: "Our offer is ..."
United: "Ok, we accept".

Honestly never want to see him at the back again. The whole team just look so much more confident without him in it.

The main challenge is to keep Varane fit, if he is healthy it's always him +another. If Martinez settles nicely and demonstrates his class like many on here expect of him, then it's an easy choice, and Maguire will quietly push for a move.

Yeah, that's the main problem - keeping Varane fit, he is vital to this team now.

Genuinely think if Chelsea want him and are willing to spend realistic money on him, then we should cut our losses now.

He's so easily replaceable too if it's a case of another body needed in there.

In a 4 man defence Ten Hag system, there's absolutely nothing he can offer.

Quite sad how exposed he now is to be honest. If he played yesterday, Salah scores in the first half.

He will stay and play some games this season. I cant see us selling him, because we dont know if Varane will go the whole season without getting injured (and its annoying cos I wouldnt be surprised if it happens playing for France).
Also with us loaning out Bailly, I can see our four being Varane, Martinez, Maguire and Lindelof.

I do think he should no longer be captain though.

£80m defender in rotation as a back-up....

This isn't a computer game; that's serious, serious wedge.

Nevermind the ins and outs of what Maguire is or is not, £80m defenders sitting on benches isn't even entertained by the oil clubs. It's an absurd notion.

Its easy to get lost in the euphoria of last night's result. But let's face facts, first two games of this season we have attempted to push high and actively play out from the back while the opposition hit high balls towards martinez and went over the top with our GK being a statue in his box.

Last night we sat in a mid block at times but were mostly in a low block and the opposition didn't have a target man to aim high balls at and we smashed everything long. Hardly fair comparisons even de gea actually swept last night.

Not saying varane and martinez were poor they were certainly good, but its a similar situation to where we have seen maguire be excellent in the past aswell.

Let's see how Varane and martinez do when asked to push high, play out from the back and deal with high balls and balls over the top of a genuine high line before we write Maguire off and sell him leaving lindelof as the third choice CB, just imagine going away in the PL with lindelof and martinez as a CB pairing. It would be a massacre.

For whats it worth I think a little time out of the first team is a good thing for maguire, hopefully time out of the spotlight will see him find his best form and confidence return because I guarantee we will need him again at some point this season.

What baffling logic. You want to therefore want us short in defence by selling Maguire whilst Varane has been injury prone since being here. Axel sat on the bench at Napoli and Mengi isnt even near the first team. You claim selling Maguire would be like a new signing which is strange in itself. Clearly one of many who don’t like him but thankfully ETH is the manager who wants depth in defence in a busy season and Maguire is likely to be used against more physical teams.

Sure, lets spend another 30-40 mil on new defender and have 8 defenders for season.
Maguire is good defender for deep defence. Playing him in high line with 4 at the back is recipe for disaster

Would be fantastic for the club If we can move him on and get Antony and FDJ in. Move shaw on next year although i think he maybe in the last year of his contract?

I thought Martinez and Varane were excellent last night but before we completely write-off Maguire I think we need to remember a couple of things...

1) Our forwards and midfield worked their socks off last night and actually did their jobs defensively. Many of us have highlighted that all of our defenders have struggled at times as they have been asked to play high and have been exposed by lack of defensive pressures from the forwards/midfield. For an example of how this can impact how a CB looks individually, see how bad van Dijk looked last night when asked to play high without that aggressive and co-ordinated press in-front of him.

2) We defended very deep last night and we only had 30% possession. It will be extremely important that our forwards/midfield keep up that high-energy, high-intensity press as we push higher and higher up the field. Casemiro should really help in this respect but my eyes are on Rashford, Sancho, Ronaldo, Martial etc....can they keep motivating themselves to work as hard as they did last night against middling teams?

I am always sympathetic to our CBs because it's a position I have played regularly throughout my life. It's an impossible position to play if your not defending as a unit and an easy one to play in a well-oiled machine!

Please sell him this window.

We'd get a decent price now that will only plummet if he doesn't play much this year.

Selling Maguire now would do more harm than good. We have 35 league games to get through, not to mention the multiple cup competitions we're involved in this season, so we're bound to need him at some point. He's our third choice CB as things stand and a good option when we're up against physical sides that are good in the air.

We can buy someone else, it's okay

I've long felt we would never get back to where we should be as a club until Harry Maguire is no longer in our Starting XI

I did not however envisage it would take 90 minutes for that to be proven.

Nah, obviously there's a ways to go, and he'll still get a lot of game time, but hopefully it should be as our clear 3rd choice CB

We could, but I think FDJ, Anthony and (hopefully) a RB are the priorities right now. Next season might be a good idea to look for a replacement for Maguire.

We also have to consider the homegrown rules which Maguire represents.

Hope hs takes some cues from this game in next appearances. He doesn't need to take as many touched and ponder the way he does. We don't need him to try and be some dribbling playmaker. Play it quickly and accurately and get it to our attacking players.

You haven’t answered the question for squad depth have you? You and a lot of others on here with your hatred of Maguire are so insistent on selling him without any thought on our defensive depth for the season. Thankfully the manager sees different.

Do you think Maguire will be happy being third choice?

The position he finds himself in now, is the position he should have always been in: a squad player who should be used for rotation. Because that's his level and he can be quite handy in that role due to the fact that he's always available. He's just not good enough to be an automatic starter. Obviously, if he doesn't like that then he can go.
