If he start the next game something must be wrong with Ole. He's atrocious.

It's by no means an ideal partnership, and highlights the shocking lack of quality we have there. But is Maguire more reliable than either of those in his current form? I'm doubtful. On his day, definitely. Not right now.

We've seen this partnership. One is meek and the other reckless, neither is good in the air or has an ounce of leadership. It is asking for trouble. If they start as a pairing in a back 4 I predict we'll concede at least 3 goals on Saturday.

He’s not this bad. He’s in terrible form because he had no time off to get his head sorted after a season where he was overplayed/then had the whole court shite in the summer.

Really needs 2 weeks to sort his head out and recover but he won’t get it because of your poor recruitment. (In before someone says he’s an example of that too).

Sad how petty some of our fans have become, mocking and making fun of our own player. Shit happens in everyone's life. Maguire is going through his bad patch, if you cannot back him then at least stop mocking him.

And it seems reading some idiotic comments some really want him to fail and are taking pleasure at his mistakes.
Yeah, it's sad to see.

I think there comes a time when you can't even get annoyed with a player anymore because at the end of the day Harry's wellbeing is much more important than what he does on a football field and he's clearly going through an extremely rough period in his life, Ole would be selfish to play harry this weekend, or the next, or even the one after,

He needs a break out the limelight, headspace, time to regroup and regain focus, the media are thriving of his downfalls and every miss pass, slack tackle, anything to aim an attack on and put him in a headline is just mounting on the pressure, twitter is absolutely vile right now with all these stupid football twitter media accounts hounding him but would be the first to pay condolences if anything were to happen to him.

We've been conceding 4 goals on average in the league so far, so worth trying.

He has been atrocious so far this season, wonder if its somethign to do with summer troubles? I think as expected he is under the microscope being such a high fee. For me he is a decent defender in an awful period of form. But decent and £80m are worlds apart.

I still cant believe we didnt make a centre back a priority signing this summer. We havent had a good one since Vidic and Ferdinand and we only seem to have two bar Mengi who is very young that can even stay fit.

We may well reach the end of the summer needing to sign two as we should have done the window we blew £80m on Maguire.

Its an awkward situation as neither Lindelof, Maguire or Bailly are deserving to start at the moment. I also feel the armband should be taken from Maguire....but doing that at this moment could be very detrimental to him as well

It's good to hear an actually sensible opinion amongst an absolutely shimmering pool of clowns just slating him.

It's like they don't recognise that some massive legal issue may just have messed him up. Especially mixed in with the very unusual and short pre-season, that has seen most of our players look well off the pace.

We carry Lindelof at the best of times, and Bailly can't be relied upon at all.
With Jones and Rojo the other options, both of whom make Tuanzebe look invincible versus injury, then there really is no other option.

Good post. Some actually want him to fail, if that means United lose a few game, hey who cares? As long as they get their ‘I told you so’ moment. Sad to see.

Oh please, this is the exact molly coddling that is wrong with the world at the moment. He is a professional footballer paid hundreds of thousands of pounds who has had off field problems because he got drunk.

What he needs to do is roll his sleeves up, get his head down and work his way through a bad period of form. This is rightly or wrongly an £80m player and the captain of the club and you say he should be given a break for a few weeks because he is getting slaughtered for basically being absolutely crap for 3 or 4 games, pathetic.....and here comes "he is a human being"

He needs a rest. At least a couple of games. SAF would say I am resting you. I remember Peter having a terrible time and saf sent him on leave to the caribbean. He came back good again. Maguire needs a break because his head is not in the right place now.

Now all players make mistakes & if you look hard enough you could make a reel of Ronaldo missing chances but this nonsense that his rather marked drop in form happened suddenly is simply untrue.

Fans fall over themselves in a Maguire thread to make an excuse but god forbid a certain French midfielder have an off day.

He’s obviously better than he is currently showing but he hasn’t dipped in form from peak-Rio; he’s a decent CB who when isolated is a booking waiting to happen.

I want nothing more as a United fan then for him to come good but take off the United tints & we need to build a whole new defence around him to protect him which simply shouldn’t be the case.

Go through the performance threads for oppo players on here & the sanctimony in telling people to stop mocking him stinks. Infact head to the Bruno/OgS thread from earlier today where somehow Pogba [another one of our own players] caught flack in multiple posts. Have you looked at a Lingard thread recently?

When your defence of his pathetic displays is support our players you really need to take action for the whole squad or quite frankly leave the morals at your keyboard.

He’s been poor since Project Restart, the Greece incident has just exacerbated his decline in form.

In Rio/Campbell era he would be considered alongside the Lescott type level, he's a good defender but not top bracket and never has been.
He’s not as talented as Lescott was.

It’s hard to believe we were stupid enough to spend 80m on him, he’s better than this obviously but at moment he is a complete liability and has to be dropped.

He’s not really any better than likes of Smalling and Evans but has added pressure of being Captain and worlds most expensive defender. After a couple of seasons as errors pile up he’ll be seen as someone that needs to be upgraded just like Smalling and Evans.

If Maguire starts at Newcastle he will make an error leading to a Newcastle goal. He's not with it, everyone else knows it and those nerves will go through the whole defence. Whatever the reason for his bad form, he's in bad form. He needs a mental break.

I don't understand why our fans are against him. He's clearly going through a rough patch and it's obvious that whatever happeneed in Greece is affecting him. He needs some time off and support from our fans yet some are so keen to throw him under the bus. Cretins I tell you
I agree, he needs an arm around him and a break. He's not a terrible player but he needs time off to work through whatever it is that he is going through.

Put the trust in him to come back like he was (a solid performer, but not world class) and he will want to repay that trust.
Sadly you re correct. Don't take the sickos too seriously though. This time last year they were engaged in the silly Brexit FC frenzy.

first of all he has been a let down since the restart so its not just Greece and thus I would rather he not get back to what he was thanks!

Yes, this Greece thing may have affected him somewhat but he will need to pull himself together and FAST.

he isn't the first footballer to get arrested, get in a fight, or go to court. John Terry was nearly prosecuted as a racist for crying out loud, still banned by the FA and had a SCANDAL involving a teammates wife! Suarez had all his biting nonsense as well with all the racist attention but got on with it. I recall Gerrard beating up a bouncer. He needs to pull himself together and get over it because as Bastian says below, we have f all else to play CB. it will be even worse if Bailly and Lindelof play!
I agree he's in poor form and it seems the negative press and that debacle in Greece may be getting to him. He's also been scrutinised a lot more recently, his price tag and his captain status.

But this "get him therapy", "needs a long break from football", "take him out of the squad" stuff.

Do people not realise who our other centre backs are? Bailly and Lindelof as a pairing is an unmitigated disaster. Only ever functional when they had papa Fellaini holding their hands, doing the dirty work. Tuanzebe is only just back from injury - do people want Ole to do his thing and flog him to death as soon as he's back to training? I'm sure Ole is only too happy to oblige.

The market is closed. He'll need to play.
indeed.

100% this. All the posts about him being shite are clearly off the mark. He’s not a bad defender. Clearly he’s got a lot going on off the field AND on it and he needs some time away.

Please can that red card suspension carry over into club football?

In all seriousness, he does need to sit out for a couple of weeks, even if our other options are poor. I'm not his biggest fan, but he's definitely much better than we're seeing right now.

I think he needs a rest but for those saying he should be dropped: who are we going to play instead?

We have some sad human beings on this forum.

The club and fans have to support the player to help him get through this mess. We're not blessed in this area and we're not going to bring in any players in this position any time soon. It's in everyone's interests for him to get over this slump and to do it quickly. This is what Ole is there for, to help the player improve after this disappointing start.

Lindelof is our only other CB who s not injury prone.

but you can''t make a silk purse from a sow's ear

He deserved a red card for that first touch he had before starting the tackle that caused him to get a second yellow...

Also i see people suggesting to send Harry out on a holiday to clear his mind but, even without coronavirus going round, is that really a good idea? Last time he had some time off he got arrested and convicted.

Phil Jones and Lingard playing worse but I don't hate them. The moment he, as our captain, backed Anthoy Taylor in the red card incident, I am done with this guy. He does not fit to wear our shirt.

I think I must be the only one who thought he was unlucky with that second yellow.
Got away from him, he won the ball, then unfortunately momentum took him into someone.

Saving himself for saturday though...smart
Nope. I agree. Harsh yellow. You'd think given he was on a yellow already he may have got away with it.

yeah mate, not sure what all this Molly coddling is all about, unless he actually comes out and says it why are people making these assumptions?
He got into a fight on a drunken night out, he’s not going to jail over it and nobody was hurt. Why are people second guessing that he’s in mental disarray over it?

He’s not a top level player and never has been, maybe this is just him in bad form because it happens to players of his level. I don’t think he’s been particularly great since being made captain, a decision I thought was wise at the time but actually I think it’s too heavy for him. This is just a continuation of a loss of form that started in January and has got significantly worse since we came out of lockdown.

He needs a time out to gather himself. Can't keep playing him like this, he's a young lad after all. Let him have some time off

Yeah but imagine if we lose a game. I can already hear Keane ranting about lack of character, mental strength, not captaincy material etc.

And if turns out we do well, there'll be others after him.

'Manchester United keep first clean sheet of the season after dropping £80m CB'

He can't win in that scenario.

Keane and the press are gonna attack him/United regardless of what happens. That shouldn't dictate what we do. Maguire needs some time off to get his head in order. Continuing to persist right now is only damaging him in the long term.

Totally agree mate. The quality of the posters on the Cafe has been going down over the years and you have to really scroll through any thread these days to find any sensible posts. It's no coincidence that for example two of the sensible posts in this thread have come from yourself and @SilentWitness who have both been around for years.

Agreed. Criticism of performances, and holding players to high standards, is well within the normal bounds of fandom. Typically, however, fans would and should back their players particularly during rough patches - the one exception being if a player has disrespected the club, indicated they want to leave, or some similar action.

If Harry Maguire had been a member of the last Manchester United squad that won the premier league, he’d almost certainly have been sixth choice. I mean, he’s definitely better than Scott Wooton, but would you pick him ahead of Jones or Smalling circa 2013?

It’s not his fault he’s captain, but Jesus, that’s a damning indictment of the club’s slow drift into perpetual mediocrity isn’t it?

This is his true level, he's always been a glorified clogger. But nobody wanted to have it, seeing as we have paid £80m and are desperate for our own VVD.

He had never shown any ability to organise a defence in his career before we signed him. Evans held his hand and was the true leader of the defence with Leicester. They still had an average defence at best, conceded 60 (16th) & 48 (7th) goals in his two seasons there. He was also protected by the back three at the World Cup. But now ask him to be the leader here, and take away that protection and he hasn't got a clue.

All that's happening now is he has been found out, and people are seeing him for the mediocre defender he really is.
