Absolutely sick to death of these so called ball playing CB’s that can’t defend or run. Smalling gets criticised for looking awkward when passing but is a very good defending. It was a ridiculous decision to get rid before even trying him with Maguire.

So, we need to buy a 60mil £ CB to cover for weaknesses of our world record CB...

We could've bought Dunk or Tarkowski for half of his fee for the similar results.

We spent £80m on a player who is no better than Smalling defensively. Actually, he is probably worse because he doesn't have Smalling's pace.

He may be a better passer, but what does that matter if you are playing a midfielder ahead of him who can't pass? Defending is a centre-back's primary job, not passing.

If you are spending that much on a centre back, I would expect someone of Van Dijks level, or close to him at least.

People keep on saying we need a fast centre back to offset him being slow, but is it not better to have two fast centre-backs? Why do you need to compromise?

3/10 today. Toyed with all game by Zaha.
If a new CB is to be bought in the next 12 months then that new CB needs to threaten Maguire's spot in the team. Maguire isn't cut out for defending high up the pitch in isolation for obvious reasons. And defending high up the pitch in isolation for CBs is a must if a team wants to press high up the pitch and implement a progressive game style. We are not in the 80s or 90s any more where being just aerially dominant was enough.

If a new CB is bought who has the aerial, technical, physical and mobile capabilities then I can see two fast CBs playing in tandem because Mengi will potentially be more ready to be a starter by then.

This is what I see happening in the end. I think eventually we will sign someone strong in all those areas and it will start to show Maguire as the weak link due to his lack of pace. The new centre back will keep on having to cover for him when we are facing any counter-attack, which will probably become frustrating.

The strange thing is: if we do sign a player who has pace on top of all that, the best player to play alongside him would actually be Smalling, who looks to be leaving.

I don't know anything about this Mengi, but hopefully, he turns out good because we are going to need him.

The club need to accept the fact that despite the money he cost he's average and we need to upgrade.

His distribution today was shocking.

The worst part though is when he takes the ball and starts surveying the field with the ball on his feet like he's Messi or Pele. He slows us down so much and will unnecessarily hold onto the ball too long.

Starting to think it's both a collective and individual issue.

Ole praised him putting his foot on the ball so slow the tempo

£80m.... You’re telling me we can’t find a defender just as good for £30m, bollocks, I may as well be a scout at this point. Teams a joke, manager’s a joke, board is a joke. But carry on telling me and others were spoilt fans because we expect more

When he misplaced the ball, it was horrible, some simple passes fecked up. It's not like he was trying long balls to open things up

It's no wonder the club are hesitant to release funds when we spend £80m on players that end up so disappointing.

Our scouting department has been horrible or our board ignore our scouts.

We haven't unearthed a gem from a transfer in a very long time.

Paying £80m for CB who needs a partner with pace to compensate for him says it all really.

excellent recruitment. Him and James brilliant signings. 80m CB who needs a new expensive partner to make him look good. And a winger who belongs in the championship

Not to dissimilar to spending 90 million on a midfielder only to then have to get 2,3 players in the middle to do most of the dog work for him.

80 million on Maguire and 90 million on Pogba, you cant spend that type of money on players who have such blatant weaknesses in their game.

Poor on and off the ball but the leadership was superb, the way he shouted at Shaw and pointed to the grass "Luke! I've lost the fecking ball again and I'm too slow to get back, run for me Luke, run!"...... Magnificent!

Exactly. When you're paying record fees, you best believe the player you're getting is the total package.

He looked rocked for confidence to be honest, but it must be a demented experience playing next to Lindelof.

We sold Evans for little who is far superior to him. Also selling Smalling who is better for little.
Soon we will sell Maguire for 1/3 of the sum too.
We are just terrible at dealing with what we got and in the market.

His distribution was poor which invited pressure, but as for his actual defending it was ok, not nearly as bad as people are making out and doesn't help when he had a paper bag next to him..

Where are the ‘My Captain’ brigade now?

Came in for £80mil to boss the players whatsapp chat & arrange meals; the £100mil spent on him & our benched right back is one of the key reasons the purse strings have tightened.

Said it before & will say it again, should have built from the front as Caf fave Klopp has done.

Have defended him enough. He cost a world-record fee for a defender and should start resembling a fairly decent center half playing for United. I can find plenty of defenders at least equal to or even better than him at half the price. The fee is not his fault I understand, but he is supposed to be a decent center-half.

This. He believes his own hype. Needs to settle down and realise he's actually been very average in his career for United so far.

What frustrates me the most is that because we spent £80m on him and immediately gave him the captaincy, he almost becomes undroppable and Lindelof is the one in need of upgrading. By my estimation, it's pretty close in terms of who the shitter CB is for us. It probably is Lindelof, but I wouldn't say by much.

Horrible buy.
How long is his contract?
 Well put.

There is a difference there even if that is not true. Maguire was bought for 80mil but is comfortably worse than the player[Smalling] he was bought to replace.

I've been told he is ball playing defender, but I've yet to see him showing he is one.
Keep passing the ball carelessly to the opponents which end up immediately with counter attack against us, plus he is too slow to chase the ball back to rectify his mistakes.. its painful to watch

Not really. The ability to avoid any confrontation isn't a good quality for a center back – Maguire's positional play was absolutely appalling yesterday and it exposed Lindelöf, De Gea and Shaw numerous times and put them in horrible situations (in which neither covered themselves in glory). Lindelöf was the worst player on the pitch, but Maguire wasn't far off.

Their average is about the same, but Maguire's good games are significantly better. I guess the hope is that if he were part of a proper partnership he would feel more comfortable and we'd see the good matches more often.

How can any CB cover for Maguire shortcomings while playing with High line defence?

IMO we should sell him even for half price we paid. He is good player but for middle level club playing low block.
