United aren't big everywhere, I live in Spain and I couldn't tell you the last time I saw something about Utd on the TV or more than a couple of lines about them in a newspaper, even the Mourinho appointment wasn't much of a news story here and I've yet to meet a Spaniard who supports or is majorly interested in any English club. Utd are big in countries that don't have any major football of their own, hence why you are popular in places like Africa and Asia and lesser European football countries like Norway.

As for history, I don't know which country you're from but it might surprise you that all clubs have history and depending where you start from their are English clubs who have a greater history than Utd.
I've never met a Real Madrid fan in the UK. Countries that have their own major league don't tend to have people supporting foreign clubs in huge swathes so I'm at a loss as to what your point is there.

Why would Kane even want to leave for any English club this season! For any footballer, it generally comes down to where he is likely to win most trophies-not the size of club, that's why Hazard joined Chelsea after they won UCL, RVP joined us as we were more likely to win the league than Arsenal, etc. Next season, no one knows how the rival clubs will go about. Arsenal are Leicester were the only clubs that finished above them. Leicester wont be winning next year. How arsenal fares depends only on Wenger's dealings, City have a massive rebuilding job and only time will tell whether he is successful or not. We have missed Cl 2 times in last 3 years and while we have an excellent manager, our chances of winning the league aren't the highest. Chelsea are in shambles and it'll take a few seasons before they are at their best.
Kane knows a wrong transfer would be costly for his career. He'd much rather stay, score 25 goals again and maybe get a bidding war going between English clubs as well as likes of RM and maybe PSG. He gets more money, more trophies

Bit confused by the folk arguing Manchester United are not a top tier club - of course they are. I'm a Spurs fan but it's obvious that Man Utd and Liverpool are the two top-tier clubs in England and are second only to the likes of Real Madrid in world football. When I think of the top clubs in the world I instantly think of the three already mentioned, Barcelona, Juventus, Milan - these are the clubs with the history, the following around the world and the stature of truely great football clubs.

It's just a fact.

As much as I love Spurs I will freely admit that they are a second tier English club - still a great club with great history and support but not on the same level as Utd or Liverpool - same can be said of Arsenal, Chelsea, etc.

We are horribly off topic now - Kane is not leaving this summer.

Nailed it!

And you're right, Kane is going nowhere, even an 80m bid wouldn't do it so it's pointless discussing it.

Just not true, Grande Torino was arguably, a bigger footballing and human tragedy.

Fair point, but I still think the United disaster cemented and stayed in the football psyche more powerfully, for whatever reasons...hence the sense that the history of united feels bigger.

That is simply because we (most of us I would guess) are from UK and Munich is part of the sporting history here - if we had been brought up in Italy then we may be more familiar with Grande Torino and it would be more of our own sporting history. Also Munich happened around 10 years after Grande Torino so there is the time difference to consider as well.

Liverpool are as second rate as it gets. The rest is scouse/media hype.

You might be right about Kane not leaving though. I'm not sure any European teams will actually be interested yet and I just can't see a move to another English club this summer. I wasn't convinced about wanting him for United but I am being won round. I'd actually be interested in seeing how he does for Spurs next season.

I think he means overall package of which Liverpool remain in that tier because of their history.

They're fully second rate now taking into account team/stadium/money/fanbase/the past few decades (one reasonable season isn't enough in my book).

Their fanbase is still one of the largest around. It's the history that keeps them going. The poster was talking about the size of clubs so it can't be denied that club is still massive. If we had years in wilderness we'd still be a top tier club because of the history (it's already happened once).

They're not on the same level as us, who are probably currently bottom of the tier 1 clubs. To count a club that consistently wins very little, very often finishes poorly in the league (in context) and is living off what happened in the 70s and 80s as one of those top clubs is absurd, specially taking into account the other stuff I mentioned in my last post.

But this is a Harry Kane thread.

Yeah, but it's all about association isn't it. Harry Kane plays for Spurs, he's become a top player, is Spurs big enough for him now....I can see how the thread meanders a bit!

I guess we could justify it and prove my point at the same time by saying Liverpool would not be a step up for him :D

Again the original post was not about current standings in football in which Liverpool are way down below Chelsea, City, Arsenal and Spurs. It's about the whole package of which they are significantly better than Spurs, Chelsea and City and still better than Arsenal.

AC Milan are still a giant club in my eyes but in current standings way below in the list. Atletico who in current standings are a top outfit are not a top club in overall package.

In what way is Liverpool a better package than Spurs currently though? From what I see Spurs match them in nearly every way apart from what happened 30-40 years ago. Their fanbase is a bit bigger but globally is no way near the top top clubs.

They're not!! Currently Spurs are better than Liverpool. Lots of clubs around Europe are better than Liverpool. Leicester City are better than Liverpool.

The idea of listing clubs in tiers is a bit moot I admit as football doesn't stand still but my point is if you were to compare each facet in a top trump manner i.e trophies, fanbase, money and head-to-head Liverpool come on top. That's all it is.

I don't disagree at all that Liverpool are a two-bit outfit now but this two-bit outfit has a large fanbase around the world that allowed them to maintain some relevance as others like Arsenal City and Chelsea overtook them. That's fallen a lot since Benitez left as he had put together a decent side but Klopp could be the man to rejuvenate them. His appointment is a coup. Any club in Europe would have loved Klopp as manager. We'll see what happens.
