Gun shots outside Parliament: Police shoot assailant following car attack on Westminster Bridge

So now I can call you a massive idiot for making fun of my beliefs and the matter ends there? Btw you are confusing freedom of speech with being offensive. Bellend.

Mind the insults. Your freedom of speech on this private forum is limited. Ta.

That's something else which grinds my gears (and I'll let this get back on topic now, I promise!) People who think freedom of speech should allow you to be offensive on a public forum without people thinking you're a twat on the basis of those opinions, or deciding they don't want to allow you to keep using their platform. Freedom of speech allows us to be offensive but it doesn't give us any right to insist that other people should be forced to keep reading our offensive opinions.

a muslim would not mock their own faith if they actually believed in it? What would they mock? "oh I believe in a God but I think he's silly" Not sure what scenario makes sense here mate. If they did they would be misguided by all accounts.

Bit of a non-sequitur there... How old is your sister, yes or no?

Why are you determined to take things to the extreme?

4 mental blokes are locked in a cell in mental asylum. A local leader comes for a tour of the asylum. The doctors are walking him through the facility when he hears some noise from one of the cells. The leader stops and asks to see what's going on. Behind the bars there are 4 men, 3 of them wildly shouting, the other sat quitely in the corner looking amused.

The leader turns to the doctor and asks him what they're saying. The doctor replies;
"The first man is shouting that he should be released, he claims to be Muhammad and says gods wrath will be upon us for locking him up".
"The second man is shouting that he should be released, he claims to be Jesus and says gods wrath will be upon us for locking him up".
"The first man is shouting that he should be released, he claims to be Moses and says gods wrath will be upon us for locking him up".
"I don't know why the fourth man is sitting there quitely".

At this point the 4th man gets up and calmly walks up to the bars.
"I find these three and their wild claims highly amusing. Each of the claims to be a prophet of God, yet I didn't appoint any of them".

There you go, a Muslim joke about religion. We do joke about religion, we just don't mock it. Muslims consider Islam to be true, I think Christianity has gotten to the point where most people who ascribe to it in the west, merely consider it a part of their history or culture.

@EyeInTheSky any thoughts on post #691?

as you can see I have a number of interactions going on right now. Thank you for asking so politely

so after reading that please summarize your point. You write that you take deep offense to the belief of others beliefs? Surely your position is contradictory?

Perhaps you are missing my point. Let me try and frame it because reading posts answering so many off topic responses from multiple people can be unhelpful. (Also you misunderstand some of the topic around hell etc)

  • I reserve the right to feel offended by someone insulting me, my family or people I care about.
  • I reserve the right not to be bullied, ridiculed by a group or individual (like a hate campaign or harassment)
I don't see what is so outrageous about this. Governments have rules around this for a reason. Hell, this forum does not allow it ffs yet people are complaining about it!

That is the last I will say about this topic. People are free to think what they want.

Private forum, open to the public, subject to our rules. Just to clarify. :nervous:

Didn't he say his insults gives me the right to call him a massive idiot? Or are you one of those mods who only allow a type of insults while keeping a closed eye on another? Why am I warned but not him for insulting my relegion? The discussion about relegion is turning into a form of cyber bullying and you are defending it by such statements.

They do make fun of the disabled people which in my opinion shouldn't be permitted, let them make fun of the politicians, movie stars and athletes but not the weak and even religion, but I do watch south park :nervous:

Ok understood.

I think I have stepped into the twilight zone here. I can't believe there are people out there that think it's fine to ridicule disabled people "for fun". It's like someone has conducted an experiment by merging Nazis with left wing hipsters.

Sensitivity about mockery might be immature, but that’s not the problem. The problem is that someone like Flemming Rose needs to have permanent personal protection. The problem is that a certain form of ridicule of Islam created very real violence in Europe. The problem is that individuals who mock Islam – when it gets enough attention – might have their life ruined. The problem is that consequently we see self-censorship creeping in.

This is something the Muslim community has to address. In the West we have a small minority who is not accepting of other peoples right to mock and will react violently. It's a tiny minority and people that need to be intellectually challenged both by Muslims and Non Muslims. We might not like it, but freedom to belittle religion is something that is historically significant to European culture, it was a side effect of the "enlightenment" which in itself was really just breaking the political strength of the Church.

The real issue we face is in Muslim countries. We have a much larger problem with "blasphemy" and the reaction to "blasphemy". I think considering how sacred religion is to people in Muslim countries I support blasphemy laws, but what I don't support and what we need to tackle is the violent reaction people have to blasphemy and the abuse of those laws against minority groups.

When your religion signs up as a member and posts, I'll consider it. In the interim, calling other posters names will result in warning points. You all know this.

Yep. If you mock religion or the disabled, you're definitely within the realms of Hitler's mob.

Can we please take the religious/freedom of speech debate elsewhere?
Sensitive thugs, y'all need hugs.

Really funny and smart response, anyway it just shows favoritism in the way you handle such situations and how it's all okay when someone is speaking about something you agree with, and then people wonder why muslims won't get involved in such debates here anymore, anyway I'll get out of your precious thread don't worry.

That was a figure of speech. Had he called you an idiot directly he would also have received a warning.

You called him a bellend. Amazing how some posters miss the blindingly obvious.

How about you don't speak for all muslims? There are plenty on here who can argue without throwing a strop.

The discussion is about freedom of speech. A fairly standard tangent in threads like this, for obvious reasons. But a tangent all the same.

It does but thats usually because people go too far in attacking religion because they want to react against an act of terrorism and suddenly forgot everything isn't binary. Its an emotional event so somewhat understandable.

Its sad that people are willing to throw decency (what actually guides society) under the bus to pretend suddenly that freedom of speech is dogma and universal. All so they demonstrate hate.

Not to say your all quoting an amercan bumper sticker. In this country you dont have universal freedom of expression there's exceptions written in to the right.

What about gingers and the obese? Surely that's still ok?

White text!

Wtf is going on in this thread?
I wanted to read the news about what happened and it's just full of bullshit.

Maybe I need to post that Liverpool crowd gif.
Just looking now and it is a giant bickerthon.

You write that you take deep offense to the belief of others beliefs? Surely your position is contradictory?

Perhaps you are missing my point.

No, you are missing mine. I am arguing that the principle you would use to ban expressions of belief which you find insulting can and would be used to ban beliefs you hold sacred. Hence it is in the interests of people who want to be free to practice their religion that strong laws protecting freedom of expression, including the freedom to express beliefs others find offensive and insulting, exist.

(Also you misunderstand some of the topic around hell etc)

My comments on hell were made with an eye not just on Islam. But I'd be interested to hear from a believing Muslim how somebody who dies an atheist can avoid the hellfire.

I reserve the right to feel offended by someone insulting me, my family or people I care about.

Nobody is arguing otherwise.

I reserve the right not to be bullied, ridiculed by a group or individual (like a hate campaign or harassment)

This depends on many factors. Just because you feel ridiculed or even bullied doesn't mean you are.

I don't see what is so outrageous about this. Governments have rules around this for a reason.

Governments in the West at least mostly try to protect the freedom to satirise and even ridicule (yes they are different things). Unfortunately there has been some pushback against this in recent years due primarily to the threat of violence emanating from a small but vocal minority.

Hell, this forum does not allow it ffs yet people are complaining about it!

This forum is privately owned and run. We are all guests here and may be banned at the owners duscretion. Just like I would have the right to kick you out of my house if I welcomed you in and you proceeded to do duly me. That is not a violation of free speech - you are free to continue insulting me out on the street and you will not be prosecuted for it.

People are free to think what they want.

But if you had your way, would not be free to express what they think.

Pass a big thanks on to your colleagues. The situation must be very stressful for them too.

I will do mate. A few of them were the amongst the first doctors to run out of the hospital and attend to the victims, one of them even has his face plastered on a few papers today.

All a bit shaken up by it unsurprisingly but I think they've done a great job.

This is a slight occupational hazard of working at St Thomas though, you can't say we don't get unusual things coming through the door. :(

I'm not sure anyone is throwing decency under the bus. The nature of debate means extreme examples will be discussed. Thankfully, common sense prevails in reality. I 'm sure everyone advocating free speech in this thread tries not to be hateful or offensive in their day to day life. I know i do.

You do a great job. It takes things like this for all the emergency services to get the credit they deserve. Which is so wrong.:(

I agree this debate should be done elsewhere but I have been mobbed by a shed load of posters to reply.

Also, I don't think I think your attempt to distance mocking the disabled, physically mentally works. It's not a massive leap from my hyperbole.

Masha-Allah, Bro...

That is or should be the real face of Islam. Helping others.

It's not a hadith, it's commentary from wherever he ctr+c and ctr+V from. Who have interpreted the hadiths quoted at the bottom of his post in a certain way.

From a website called The Council of Ex Muslims, just put it into google.

You compared them to Nazis/hipsters, I sarcastically agreed. I think you'll find Nazism is a bit of a leap from believing the right to offend is part of free speech.

But if you had your way, would not be free to express what they think.

this is your problem, assumptions and biases.

You're taking it to extremes that people should be allowed to express whatever they think (YOUR words). Paedophiles think they have a right to molest children, should we allow them to express what they think? That's one of many examples that makes your flawed reasoning irreconcilable with the reality.

in NO way did I say anywhere that people can't express what they think. All I said was that they should not be allowed to mentally or physically harm others.

How you came to any of your conclusions is beyond me. Post after post I have said the opposite of your claims. If you're not going to bother comprehending what I wrote or misrepresenting what I am saying then don't bother responding.
