Group C | Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia & England

Interesting. Are you slovenian? I remember the team best from the Euro’s in 2000, when an unusually good Norway beat Spain 1-0 and wood go by to a historical qf either with a win vs Slovenia, are a draw providing Spain didn’t win. We played a cautious game ending 0-0, which seemed boring but sensible because Spain was 3-2 down to Rest-Yugoslavia three minutes into extra time. Unfortunately they got a pen and another goal after that and we were out, coach Semb on his knees crying as the radio message came through.

Zahovic was quite a nifty player back then, I remember.
Nah, my missus is. I’m not a Zahovic fan, he’s a knob and is forever linked to the rival of the team I support. Clearly one of the best players in their recent history though. Most of my knowledge is post 2015 so anything before that I’ve learnt retrospectively, I can barely remember the England Slovenia game in 2010.

I probably want to see Slovenia do well more than England, seen as I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with our national team. In fact it’s barely love/hate. I’ve not loved the national team since 98

Kek's last Slovenia team that got to 2010 were a very physical, dirty, well-organised team that were tough to look good against. Don't know if he's got them playing similarly nowadays, but they'll be a potentially very frustating opponent if he has.
Yep, but it’s difficult to be a “dirty” team now. They’re compact and well organised, defending in a 442 block before Pep made it trendy again. Having a top goalkeeper and a strong fast striker really make a difference when playing that way.

I’ve never understood English patriotism/antipatriotism tbh. And I hate nationalism.

Expecting a dull uninspiring 1-0 win for England tomorrow.

I said the exact words earlier. Southgate gets a lot of credit from pundits and media due to a SF and F but he’s the reason for me that England aren’t clear favs for this tournament.

This English side is the most exciting player wise in years and only Southgate can stop them other than France

1. Is this squad better than the squad with Beckham etc?

2. The goalkeeper position is very important. Do you think that Pickford could play for Real Madrid? Because currently he plays for a team that fights relegation. So perhaps the squad is not that great?

Meh. Decent enough first half performance from Denmark in terms of pressing and possession, but no real bite in attack. Then we lost all intensity and control of the game in the second half. Højlund could have made it 2-0, but in the end a draw seems like a fair result. Could also have been a loss if Slovenia were sharper.

We've got nothing though. England will spank us, and then we'd be lucky to get a victory against Serbia to progress.

Well after the first round of games, I’d say Slovenia are the happiest.

I’m not sure Denmark saw anything to be truly fearful of in England tonight. If Trent continues in midfield, that game feels like more of an even match.

Hjulmand failed us this time, not the players... he has this idea that he wants to NOT play the same system as Morten Olsen, and Hareide did before him, the system ALL academy players has been trained with and they play all the way up their ranks.. it is not just "do it"
he plays 3 men in the back the to "supporting" defensive wingers, 3 on the mid field and two in attacking roles, it is not great this.. 5-3-1-2 he plays, Denmark has ALWAYS played a decent 4-3-3 with two FAST wingers, and what we also saw that WORKED last EURO´s was what they called Hjulmand brillant for, what i think was just not.. is that he reverted tactics 1/2 way to the games normally to our old school 4 in the back, and then it worked.

he should have picked Vestergaard and Wind out (yes nice backheel) and then have put on Damsgaard and Andreas Skov Olsen, gotten a bit more offensive in second half, and have gotten a "bit" of speed and also players that challenged, the Player Hjulmand was an abomination, and our defense was slow.. AC stepping up leaving Andersen and an EXTREMELY slow Vestergaard to pick up did NOT work, and we just got nervouse (Saw the same in the Serbia England match that could just as well have ended 1-1)

Tactics was WRONG.. Eriksen tried his best, he is a CAM, that is also why he fails here, he is not a CM or even worse a DM.. he needs to be the creator on the attacking midfield.

Also Kristensen SUCKED, much rather have a Mæhle there, even though he has not been "great" lately.

Kinda like Højlund working it, but with 2 attackers, it is not great for him, because it is a lot of "handling" of the ball, he needs to use his pace, with wingers, and be put into running position..

The match was GARBAGE, and to be honest, 5 minutes into 2 half, he should have made the changes, so CLEAR this was falling apart. to be honest i think we would have won it, if we like Italy went behind early, because then he could have mixed up the team, i did not see Slovenia as scary at all, this is also what kinda angers me, is that they looked bad.. a team we should beat 99 out of a 100 times. even though we are not a TOP 5 team. not even 10

Be interesting to see if Southgate plays for the usual second game 0-0 or actually tries to beat Denmark and get the group wrapped up.

A lot of hindsight here if you ask me. For large periods we were good and the passes were precise for long spells in the game, but second half we lost energy in midfield.

Wind was also quite good and mobile, clearly the better attacker than Højlund at the moment. But it was quite clear how slow the defence is and what happens when we run out of legs in central midfield. More width should be used to keep up the tempo.

If I was Southgate I'd play Palmer and let him, Trent and Trippier pick passes over or behind the defence all the time.

Reading Kasper Hjulmand's comments after the game makes me want to tear my hair out. He actually says that there was nothing to indicate an equalizer was coming from Slovenia, that we didn't lose energy or initiative, and that if he had made substitutions earlier people would be saying that he made them too early. The guy is delusional.

Next game will be very interesting. I think England were lucky to get the three points and it might be more evenly matched v Denmark than most expect.

I'll be shocked if England don't win that game. Denmark has shown over a few games now, that we are unable to put together a good 90 minute performance. We might be good for a half, but not a full game. Also, there were plenty of warning signs against Slovenia, where the defense showed cracks, but the opposition just didn't have the sharpness to capitalize. England will punish us a lot earlier than what Slovenia did yesterday.

I think it will probably be 2-0 or 3-0 for England.

England will probably go 1-0 up in the first half and then spend the rest of the game sitting back, punting it long and hoping for the best. Could easily be a 1-1. Serbia dominated the second half against us and I'd say Denmark are at least as good as Serbia.

From the 02 matches watched, Serbia looks like the worst team in this group. I think Slovenia and Denmark will give England more difficulty.

It seems both teams have some similar problems. England are favorites of course, but sitting back like they did 1-0 up vs Serbia won’t do them any good - Denmark did the same and was punished.

Yeah, but even if England do sit back, I can see Denmark struggling mightily to score a goal. I'm quite pessimistic about our chances, but I guess we can play without pressure, as no-one expects us to get a point. We'll have to beat Serbia though.

As the qualifiers results and last match have shown both NT current squads are of similar quality.

I think you have a very clever manager who gets a lot out of the squad. We have the opposite. On paper our squad is much stronger.
On paper Englands squad is also much better than Serbias but the match painted a very different picture.

As a Slovenian very happy with results in group so far. After dominant performance by Denmark in game in qualifiers in Copenhagen vs Slovenia I expected tougher game and a win for Denmark but our team grew into the game and were a better opponent in second half. Displayed more will and were winning most of the first and second balls. With a bit more luck (Sesko shot, Sporar putting his scoring boots on) we should have won. Serbia looks beatable and already starting their regular self-implosion (Kostic injury, Tadic voicing displeasure with being sub, Mitrovic angry at being subbed etc.). For now nothing to fear from England as long as Trent is playing in midfield and Southgate is masterminding selection where Palmer is an unused substitute with the form and impact he had for Chelsea.

Agree with this. You have a good chance of going through. I think Serbia will be fourth

Serbia have threatened to quit Euro 2024 after accusing Croatia and Albania fans of chanting “Kill, kill, kill the Serb” during the latter countries' match in Hamburg on Wednesday.

If they forfeit, would they automatically lose their remaining matches? Might be Denmark's best chance of three points.

TAA and Foden again. Really not a winning combo

feck me we cannot catch a break in EC and WC. Goal in the last minute. Fck. Need England to beat Denmark and then hope for a draw of all teams in last round... :( :annoyed:

Nonsense. We are playing at EUROs after 24 years, first time as Serbia. Quitting like that is not an option.

Slovenia still has a chance against England as long as Southgate is manager. If you look at the names and then how they play they are shockingly bad.

Saka anonymous. Foden shockingly bad. Trent in mid? are you effing kidding me? And you have Mainoo and Palmer on the bench that would get this team moving through the lines. If he doesn't sub Foden/Saka for Palmer and Trent for Mainoo at half time Gareth is a clown. Let's see. I'm betting on a clown. :)

England need more dynamism in midfield.

TAA and Foden off for Mainoo and Gallagher.
Didn't lack it against Iceland which is much worse than Denmark and much worse than the Iceland team that beat them last time.

England need a new setup, different tactics. Personnel is not a problem.

Exactly, people think changing good players and putting them in a shit system will change something. This team would be fine if it was coached properly, with no press, sitting back after a goal, and no movement. Players get the ball, pass and everyone is just standing there with their hand down the front of their shorts. It's like watching Ole ball.
