Graham Potter | turns down Ajax job

I have met and dealt with many ex, and current players in my line of work, and believe me, an awful lot of them are 'thick' and almost all of them are self centred.
This. Not just players, but i'd say professional athletes in general. People would be surprised at how little they know or care about the outside world.

By having experience and first-hand knowledge of the type of institution he was supposed to be managing. The same institution, even.

Conte was a former Juve captain and a firm fan favorite - sort of their Roy Keane type figure. He knew the environment/institution well. Also when he took over Juve were hardly title contenders. Had finished 7th the season prior, with the club still emerging from the aftermath of Calciopoli.

Conte to Juve was hardly a 'too-big-a-club-for-a-green-coach' situation.

Andrea Pirlo on the other hand

Not even close, not even for Chelsea appointees in the last few years.

Derby to Chelsea is a way bigger jump.

Didn't OGS go from Molde to Man United?

Looks like most people's sarcasm meter is completely broken

If anybody deserved time it was him - as he proved his ceiling was extremely high (smacking @adexkola favorite coach 3x in a row on the way to the FA Cup / CL double)

When did Sean Dyche get smacked 3 times by Tuchel?

As an elite manager of an elite club, a high ceiling extends beyond single season successful cup runs, otherwise Di Matteo should have been given more time due to this high ceiling he accomplished (against greater opposition than a Porto and vastly overrated City ;)). Tuchel never demonstrated this extremely high ceiling with Chelsea. Case in point, finishing 20 points behind City and Liverpool.

Why are you so desperate to shoot Tuchel bail? He's a top manager no doubt. Apart from 2 great cup runs, he never showed it consistently with Chelsea. Partly due to unfortunate circumstances beyond his control. Partly due to the same factors that made his time at Dortmund and PSG end prematurely; he's a difficult person to work with. Unlike most of his elite peers. And he's not that special to be exempted from the consequences of that.

"I don't have to give any advice because the club is different to the one I worked for"

It sounds like he's saying, don't worry Graham, the owners haven't got a clue"

The wizard was out of his depth at Chelsea, I always knew he wouldn’t be able to work his magic over there.

I was referring to Pep who you seem to revere.

Just stop with this di Matteo nonsense. Tuchel won the CL, CWC, Supercup in barely a season and a half with Chelsea. Took them twice to the FA Cup final and the EFL Cup (both lost to penalties against Liverpool). Took PSG to the CL final which is their best result ever in the competition. And played some fantastic football with Dortmund along the way. As for the league last year, there was clear turmoil at the club following Putin's invasion of Ukraine and the forced club sale - certainly that throws doubt into player's minds as they ponder their own future. Add here the ridiculous injuries and Covid illnesses and I'd say he did a successful job at Chelsea overall. Did more than Pep or Klopp achieved at their respective clubs in their first season (two seasons). I'm happy Boehly showed impatience because Tuchel at Chelsea was a threat. Never felt the same about Potter for example.

You understand it becomes an impossible job then… some coaches can only win leagues, some other can only win cups, then you have the ones winning all only with Messi in his prime and the ones winning three CL in a row without proving nothing on their own, more so in the end you have one coach who is a washed up toxic grunt and another washed up who still powns everyone & their dog but failed at Everton. It is a darn hard life, being a top top manager.

When everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, has to be done for you by the club, because it does not trust you to deal with basic life matters, then it is obvious that you would not bother to use your own limited cerebral capacity.

There is a reason that it is still remembered in retrospect [and huge false respect] that Steve Coppell went to university - at the time it was unheard of.

Potter to Leicester interview.

It was not my fault that I fecked up with a huge budget at a Champions League club. Back me and I will have Leicester in the play offs next year.

Thanks lads, the way it is phrased does sounds like he just wants a break, which is completely understandable after this season.

Not wanting to risk a relegation on his CV in the same season is a smart move.

In fairness, that line has historically worked given the jobs AVB and Mou walked into straight after us.

So who do you want as the next manager then?

Luis Enrique, Poch, Nagelsmann, Amorim, Zidane seem some of the names mentioned by the press...
my money would be on one of the 2 bolded eventually getting it.

How can you look at that Boehly face and not be absolutely confident and reassured about moving in the right direction if you are a Chelsea fan is beyond me.

Yep, and those huge hands. Stark contrast to the submissive Potter, who couldn't even keep both arms on the table.

Wearing a baseball cap and a (dreadful) suit too.

Never trust a man who doesn’t wear a time piece.

I bet a lot of people will look at this and think “Potter is a joke”, “Too small for big players” etc., rather than footballers are dickheads and stupid.

Not only you got a owner that is playing games but if players didn't respect manager they should been thrown out. Simple.

I can vividly see him going around the working place and shouting "we will kick some asses, yeah!!" while slapping on the back every poor soul that comes near him.

Not to be trusted.
