Good Central Midfielders?

Hardly. I don't consider myself to be a keen watcher of other leagues but people have been banging on about this lad since the U21 tournament in 2011 at least.

Yep. He, along with Jones and Smalling tbf, were class in that tournament.

That's nonsense then. We have to accept that defence is the only part where we can match them at the moment. Unless we got very lucky, they would comfortably dispose of us over two legs.

We won't get 'comfortably' disposed off. If the Untied that played in the league last time round turn up, we'd be more than a match for Real. I'm not saying we'll 100% win. But it would be 50-50

I've read them. I disagree but you're entitled to your opinion and certainly not alone in thinking that.

At the end of the day he's worth what people are willing to pay. 40 million quid is alot of cash...cash we probably wont spend and I can't criticise that...it's too much.

He would do more than improve us slightly. Scholes and Giggs are retiring the end of this season as well.

I just think that £40m is beyond excessive for him. I could understand a team who could really do with him stretching their fee for him to around £30m if completely desperate, but Martinez is available for less, is a far superior midfielder from what I've both seen and heard, and would help us solve some of our major problems in midfield.

I'd love us to be in for Martinez, from what I've seen he'd be a cracking addition.

To be honest nobody knows what kind of money it would take to get him though.

I agree on Modric partially...30 odd million quid and I'd be in without reservation personally.

The fact is that they are a far better team than us. Alonso is a much better centre mid than anything we have, while they have Bemzema and Higuian, with Rooney being the only forward who is better/on the same level as them that we have. They have Ozil, who is also far better than anyone we have in midfield, and of course they have Ronaldo too, let's not forget. We are probably similar to them in defence, but of course they have Casillas in goal who vastly boosts their defence. As much as it hurts, we have to accept that they are a far superior side to us right now.

Modric is worth more than 25m, and it's crazy to sugggest othrewise. He would also greatly improve our midfield, as would Martinez.

£32m is the price that's going for him apparently. When you see fees flying around with other players, Modric being a fine example, I would happily pay that sort of money for Martinez.

Yeh they both did well. Thiago and Martinez were the stand out performers though IMO.

No, myself, Brwned etc have been banging on about him for years. He's amazing.

He's the definition of flavour of the month, IMO. Search Javi Martinez and there's 5 threads with him even mentioned - none with him being the main point of discussion - between 2006 and 2011. One thread a season, or about 20 posts in 5 years before that European u21 Championship, despite him being a regular in the team throughout that time. A few people knew about him before, now you have people saying we should break our transfer record to bring him in on the basis of a handful of games. Flavour of the month written all over it.

We should be looking at signing the likes of Modric & Martinez instead of getting an average midfielder who would not improve the overall quality of our midfield.

Fergie goes on about value, well imo Martinez is a value signing. For a fixed fee (I believe it's £32 million) we can sign one of the best and most talented midfielders in Europe and he would add real quality to our midfield. If Real/Barca match that bid and he chooses them over us then fair enough but we should at least be making a bid.

Failing that, Sahin would be a good option but again he would not be cheap.

just out of interest how often have you seen martinez???? its statements like these that get on my nerves. sure he looks the part but do you not think we have watched him countless times??? if tehre are question marks about him for what ever reason then it isnt value as fergie would say. we have a limited budget. this next midfieklder we sign is going to be a huge part of our team for many years and he wants to get it right.

people where raving about sniejder and how he was our missing link, he would revitalise our team, make us this and make us that and that we should just pay £35m. Fergie choose not to persue as he didnt see value. how right he was, sniejder has done feck all since the world cup and requires a team built around him.

im pretty sure fergie like the rest of us knows we need a midfielder. he does seem to know a thing or two about the game. however, i agree with him in tat there is not a great deal of world class midfielders out there that are available.

we have missed / not acted on good players in the past who have then gone onto become world class. yay toure, modric etc. which have been mistakes / oversights.

but at the same time we have also correctly dismissed many "new roy keanes" who have then flopped...ie miguel veloso etc.

in short, we cant / dont want to compete with madrid / barca / city in trying to sign proven world class. nor are we in a position to take players away from them. therefore, until somebody realistically becomes available that would walk into our team and improve it then i only see kagawa like "good player great potential at a good price" type signings and i for one am perfectly happy with that.

the amount of times ive heard how great this mvilla bloke is must run into the 1000's and how he'd walk into our team. well watching him in the euro's he looks a big spud and id much rather perservere with what we have then shell out for the likes of him.

realistically i see us signing a yohan cabaye.

we also have to remember despite our opnions of certain players fergie still has huuge belief in ando, cleverley, petrucci and now powell. many on here view siging a centre forward as stumping the development of welbeck and hernandez. well signing some average midfielder will only do that to the likes of ando cleverley and petrucci.

If only football was matching names and comparing. I could see Nani and Valencia giving them something awkward to deal with. I think its not as cut and dry as you think. Yes, in a league system, their billions would show but in a 2 legged tie, we're not that far behind.

Yes, but the original point was that Real Madrid are a far better team than us, which is true. Someone used the two-legged tie argument to try and rebuke that. By comparing players I'm simply showing that they are a much better team than us. Of course we could beat them in a two-legged tie, but the chances of them doing so to us are a lot higher and that's a lot more likely.

I wouldn't say that.

Chelsea this year.

Obviously I'm no scout and I haven't watched every game of his but I saw him in all the Euro U21 games and I caught most of Bilbao's Europa run after they knocked us out as well as any Bilbao game shown on Sky. I've seen him a fair bit more than I've seen any other midfielder we've been linked with, and he has always impressed me which is why I'm confident he would be a big improvement to our midfield.

If we keep waiting for the perfect midfielder we'll never get him as other teams will get involved and we won't be able to compete in an auction. Martinez makes sense as he is the right age, has a release clause and has room for improvement.

Gundogan. Well, he's not somebody I think we're likely to sign but I really like the look of him. I think he'll be one of those big transfer muppet targets for next summer.

Yeah he's a very good prospect but as yet he isnt anywhere near the top tier. Maybe when he settles into the centre back position full time. I suppose his next transfer will impact on that as much as anything else.

His record of buying midfielders is pretty shocking to be fair. Since Keane was bought nearly 2 decades ago, only Carrick has managed to become a regular in our first team. Not a great record, nor does it fill you with confidence that whoever he does pick will be the right man anyway.

Saying that probability states he is well overdue signing a decent midfielder.

Definitely. I think we were linked before he went to Dortmund. Classy midfielder and still very young.

I mentioned luck, which was the definition of Chelsea's win this year.

You make your own luck Cheesy. Chelsea took their chances when they came, played as a team, and took full advantage of the slices of luck that came their way. It was Chelsea's year with the luck they got, but to put it all down to luck is a bit unfair in my view.

They were very determined, organised, committed and did what they had to do at the right times. They have been unlucky at times in the past, this year it all went right for them, but they had the right type of set up and attitude to be able to make the most of the luck that came their way.

Thank Christ we don't play on paper then! I don't think Madrid are vastly superior to us in fact I'd fancy us to beat them over a two legged affair!

I dont think they'l walk over us or something but they'l be definite favorites.

Regarding the OP,

I'd be happy with anyone that improves us really. Absolute top quality CMs are very rarely available. Modric, Martinez, Moutinho, Sahin would all improve us and could be gettable.

Dembele and Cabaye are very good too but Newcastle being Newcastle would probably ask for rooney and Vidic for Cabaye ;) They are hard to get players off.

If it wasn't for his injury (and the fact we've never actually been linked to him) Ever Banega would be perfect for us IMO.

Sahin would be a good option, although I don't see it happening.

The three belgium players, Fellani Witsel and Dembele (in that order) would be good choices.

Banega is a brilliant footballer, he sits deep as well so would manage in a midfield two. Would be a great signing, imagine he would be pricey though.

Yeah Sahin is doubtful but if they get Modric it could happen, would effectively write off Sahin's first team chances.

Got to say aside from a minor link to Modric we haven't really been linked to any centre mids

£32m is the price that's going for him apparently. When you see fees flying around with other players, Modric being a fine example, I would happily pay that sort of money for Martinez.

Yes. Martinez at £32 million in today's market, at his age, with his talent, versatility and pedigree is the very definition of VALUE.

Added to that, if he did fail to fit in with us or in the league, we could potentially sell him on to Spain, Italy, German or anywhere in Europe - as opposed to English talent who rarely venture out of the Premier League.
