Seeing as we appear to be not involved or unable to compete for the two Caf' favourites Martinez and Modric, are there any other top draw CMs out there and available that we will be possibly targeting?

What are the likely options do you think?

Top draw CMs and available shouldn't be in the same sentence.

Maxime Gonalons
Markus Henriksen
Alan Dzagoev
Amidu Salifu
Marko Verratti
Lopez Zezinho
Gueida Fofana
Joel Obi
Marcelo Brozovic
Michy Batshuayi

Hmm Joking
I hate Liverpool for buying all the good ones over the last few years. Henderson, Adam, Shelvey. We need to get Britton before Liverpool rush the deal through.

We should be looking at signing the likes of Modric & Martinez instead of getting an average midfielder who would not improve the overall quality of our midfield.

Fergie goes on about value, well imo Martinez is a value signing. For a fixed fee (I believe it's £32 million) we can sign one of the best and most talented midfielders in Europe and he would add real quality to our midfield. If Real/Barca match that bid and he chooses them over us then fair enough but we should at least be making a bid.

Failing that, Sahin would be a good option but again he would not be cheap.

I can't believe some folk think we don't need one.

They are deluded. Imagine us in the CL next season without a new CM or two.

We need TWO. Look at our competition ffs. Real have about 5 who all are vastly superior to what we have in the centre.

Yeah, £32m qualifies as 'value' doesn't it :wenger:

The problem is that there just isn't a lot of value out there at the moment and Fergie can see that. As good a player as Modric is, we wouldn't be crazy to spend £40m on him when he's worth £25m at a very big push. People who are desperate for us to sign him are just desperate for anyone to come in.

I'm a big fan of Martinez and would advocate us getting him. Whether Fergie feels there is value in buying him or not I'm not sure though. I'm hoping he takes a risk and does splash the cash on him.

We're in this situation in football though at the moment where there are four world class central/defensive mids all at one club in Barcelona, which vastly reduces the world class midfielders we are able to sign.

Alonso and Schweinsteiger would both be perfect as well in my opinion, however we're not going to be able to get either of them either unfortunately.

I think you'll just have to accept that, on paper, we aren't going to look as good as teams like Madrid anytime soon.

On paper or in reality.

I'm not overly concerned about Madrid / Barca.

I am concerned about bringing in players that can keep us top of the domestic tree...right now we could do with that one big influence in the middle.

I think that this is a bit extreme personally. As much as we undoubtedly need a new central midfielder, I don't think we desperately need two new ones at the moment. Eventually we might need an extra one, but for the upcoming season I only really think we need one.

Modric is worth more than 25 million to us...in my opinion. He's certainly worth more than that to spurs. With the likes of Young going for 18 odd million you expect a player of Luka's ability to go for only 7 million more with longer on his contract?

..That could quite easily fail in the PL.

You could say that about any player. It's always a gamble but when you consider his potential then imo it's a calculated risk which has a greater chance of succeeding.

People have been banging on about him since we played them in Europa League.

I'd happily take a few of the Bilbao lot.

Hardly. I don't consider myself to be a keen watcher of other leagues but people have been banging on about this lad since the U21 tournament in 2011 at least.

Thank Christ we don't play on paper then! I don't think Madrid are vastly superior to us in fact I'd fancy us to beat them over a two legged affair!

He's worth more to that than Spurs because they know several clubs are interested and they're going to try and get as much for him as they can.

No, I do not think Modric is worth more than £25m and I'm of the opinion that he's an overrated midfielder who would improve our midfield slightly, but who would not solve some of our major problems such as coping under high pressure. I've stated my thoughts of him in the Modric thread quite a few times so if you want to see more of what I mean have a look through my posts in that thread.

That's nonsense then. We have to accept that defence is the only part where we can match them at the moment. Unless we got very lucky, they would comfortably dispose of us over two legs.

Modric was a no-brainer as he fits our needs like a glove AND we've seen his quality week in week out for some time, so we'd be more sure about him than Martinez, who as some have said is 'flavour of the month' - I can't comment as I haven't seen him too much. However it seems that Modric will now go to Real, because we don't seem to have ever really been in the hunt.

I've read them. I disagree but you're entitled to your opinion and certainly not alone in thinking that.

At the end of the day he's worth what people are willing to pay. 40 million quid is alot of cash...cash we probably wont spend and I can't criticise that...it's too much.

He would do more than improve us slightly. Scholes and Giggs are retiring the end of this season as well.
