Not sure I’ve ever seen a striker that has scored so many goals have such a poor highlights reel. Every goal that goes in seems to be via a deflection or the keeper should have done better! This type of striker clearly has their uses but he’d barely get past 10 goals for us due to the service being so abysmal!
 
Darwin looked 3 times better than Ramos at Benfica. I think this guy would flop hard in England.
 
Shouldn't be our first choice. Maybe a fall back option if all other options go nowhere. But certainly not anywhere near the price quoted.

Ever so slightly misleading given 7 of Joao Mario's goals were penalties.

Ramos is returning 0.74 non penalty goals per 90, with an even better xG at 0.81. Whatever way you slice it, the numbers at least have been glowing this season.

How so? Unsustainable finishing hot streak aside, Nunez looked a lot more evidently technically flawed any time I watched him.

His finishing is far from world class for a start. He is better technically than Darwin, but Darwin is faster, stronger and gets more chances than him.

The bold is interesting as the stats I saw suggested quite the opposite, with Ramos' npxG being significantly better than Nunez' was.

But then there's a reason we also actually watch games, stats don't tell you everything.

Yeah that would be great. But do you really think we will pluck a gem out of nowhere? We should, but we won’t.

That's because Benfica has a much better team this year than when Darwin was there. They created and scored lots this year, especially when Enzo was there.
Even João Mario, an average midfielder that could not get into Inter 1st team, has lots of goals.

He hasn't scored since Benfica's form dipped, he's not the kinda of player that creates magic on his own.

He is a good young player, and has great potential but I don't think he will have immediate impact on United.

Not to jinx him but imo Felix, Darwin, Ramos...there's a pattern there, they are all overhyped.

The best thing for him I think would be a mid table team, kinda like Diogo Jota at wolves, and then move to a bigger club.

This would be the typical utd signing of late. Hot and cold player, not able to turn games or inspire the teammates. When we are playing shit, he will come in and go along the same crap, not changing the tide of the game in our favor. Weve gotta stop signing premier league level players who would look ok at everton. Weve gotta be signing manchester city level players like halaand for feck sake

Nunez off the ball movement is top class, and his aggressive play gets him into many good positions. Thankfully, his finishing is shite (except that one game against us).

Was he really the last hidden gem? Then again he wasn’t really a guaranteed starter, as far as I remember.

Can we count Garnacho? If he becomes a regular, I mean.

We’ve taken a punt on loads of lesser known players but they’ve usually been shit.

Our hit rate has been pretty dire. We need to find out how Brighton are pulling it off.

Are you thinking of the last ten years? Cause under ten Hag signings haven’t really been that at all.

who available is Haaland level? Kane and only Kane
 
Has fallen off quite a bit since the World Cup, along with the whole Benfica team tbh. Needs a lot more time to make it to a top club, really hope he stays and develops at Benfica for now,. Still a very good player but could be a Renato if he moves now.

Making it at Brighton is a bit easier than making it in Manchester United I reckon. There's less scrutiny on your every action in the game and less pressure from fans and the media. It also helps to come into a comparatively settled side with a fixed style of play and your style of play matches well with the team.

I also don't think we've been doing things wrong exactly - most of our recent signings have been alright generally speaking.

Hernandez indeed wasn’t a guaranteed starter. In fact, the only time he was regularly starting was on the second half of 2010-2011 season when he completely displaced Berbatov from the starting lineup. He didn’t play as well in 2011-2012 and lost his place to Webeck. In 2012-3013 he was fantastic, but we had Rooney and RVP in attack. Still he contributed massively from the bench, I think he scored as many as in 2010-2011 (around 20 goals).
 
This would be a really boring transfer for us and I say that with little to zero knowledge of the player. Can't shake the feeling though.

Sounds like he's underperforming towards his xG by 9%. If that underperformance is consistent it's a sign of a worse-than-average finisher.

Yep, though you'd need multiple seasons' data to be able to say it's consistent which puts a hard limit on what we can read into that alone.

Plus finishing is just fundamentally less important than actually getting the chances in the first place, especially when the gap is that marginal. In real terms if your striker gets you 17 open play goals in 27 games, the fact that he "should" have got you an another 1.5ish goals on top of that is only so much of a negative.

I don’t know if this is a joke or if Chelsea really did hire all Brighton’s scouting and recruiting team?

Anyway, the point was that there’s nothing inherently special about Brighton, they just have good people in the right roles, doing a good job. We could try and find our own good people but that would be harder than just hiring Brighton’s good people (probably).

I bet if Pellistri or Amad had landed there they'd be doing well by now, for the reasons you've outlined.

They took 6 staff members from Brighton, including their head of recruitment. I agree with your second point though. Alas, we're not very proactive in that department. Maybe that will change under new owners.
 
Starting to think that mobility might be a bigger need for us at #9 than I did previously. We just create so much more with Martial than with Weghorst or Cristiano, and I think it's because he can actually run into open spaces wide of the center backs and create overloads.
 
Multiple reports coming out that Benfica wants to buy Andre Silva from Leipzig so they are already accepted that he is leaving this summer.

Maybe. I thought the season before last Darwin was awful. And was great last year as a left sided forward when counter attacking and obviously a tremendous athlete but I think Ramos is technically much better. And doesn’t take penalties.

Benfica dropped off a lot after the World Cup, struggled to replace Enzo.

I think I’d be ok with him as backup at the right price. Our options aren’t much up front as is
