Television Gomorra (TV series)

Where was it actually implied that Conte was gay?

I actually used the term 'gay' a bit carelessly I think. I suppose the exact terminology comes down to how one would label attraction to differently categorized people that don't fit in to classical groupings (non-binaries, transsexuals etc.).

It was never explicitly stated that he was gay or that his lover was a born a biological male but I think the pieces added up to it or at least heavily alluded to the fact.
  • The gang called her out as a ladyboy when she sang at Conte's birthday party (this was never confirmed as accurate or inaccurate).
  • Conte was using her sister as a decoy when going to visit the apartment and also at his birthday party.
  • Conte killed the main culprit who was mocking her at the party.
  • Upon reflection she looked like a transsexual. Fake breasts, boyish body and odd face (that sounds awfully judgemental I know).
  • This is the only lover Conte is seen with in the entire show.
  • There is an earlier scene with Conte's Mother who she says something along the lines of "you just have to find yourself a good woman" which Conte reacts awkwardly/evasively to.
  • There is also a scene with the two of them where it appears Conte is reluctant to engage sexually with her. I assumed at the time it was to do with Conte's philosophy of denying himself certain pleasures but it may well have been a subtle clue towards more but I would have to go back and watch it again.
*I've used 'her' and 'she' as pronouns for ease of description and because I can't recall the name.

wow, great attention to details!
thanks a lot for the reply.
I must say that I agree with you. I never consciously realized though that there was something with the singer. But now with you mentioning it, all pieces fall into place.

Hahaha, yeah.

They love their gold, their marble, their mirrors and their big velvet thrones, don't they? They live in shitty apartment blocks, but fill their flats full of gaudy opulence.

It's going to be a humdinger of a finale next week!

I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but that was feckin incredible.

Best show on TV by a mile!

Amazing end to the season. Just wow. Can't wait for the third season and it's apparently been commissioned for a fourth as well.

A good finale even if I'm not too fond of the outcome. Hopefully the next season comes a little quicker than the 18month/2 year wait we had for this one.

Fecking Ciro, the quintessential cockroach!

Every scene carries an ominous tone. During the wedding I was just waiting for something to happen and then we had the first scene with Ciro's kid when it felt like something would happen.

It'll be interesting to see where they go now that Don Pietro is dead. Where will they draw a rivalry from? Ciro looked like a beaten man despite prevailing and virtually every big player has been wiped out. I'm not even sure whether the outcome was Genny deciding to take over or simply opening up the market for him to make money again from Rome.

I have four episodes saved up, can't feckin wait now that I read your reviews.

love that noisy-ambient sound of the show!

I was thinking about this myself. Could go one of a few ways really. Could be Genny vs a revitalised Ciro. After all, he's Immortale, and you can never count him out. Or it could be Genny (and maybe Ciro) vs the Alley Kids. Or it could be a completely new storyline with different characters.

Let's not forget, Genny seems to be the don of Rome as well now, so it could be about him and his wife schmoozing and murdering their way to the top in the capital. Might be less explicit violence, more about backhanders, corruption and intrigue. Either way, I'm excited to find out.

Whtever way it goes, Genny and Ciro will survive the next season. I think those are basically the stars of the show now and it would be good if they wrap up the series in 4 seasons.

I have no idea how the ballot thing worked.
Two years later...

I'm reading Saviano's book, My Italians, and he describes how it works. The clans sell blocks of votes to politicians they like, usually in batches of 500 or 1000. They approach people who don't usually vote and offer to buy it from them, for about 50 euros, say. The voter will receive a ballot paper, already filled in with the clan's selection, and will go to the polling station. There, they'll receive a blank ballot paper. They go into the voting booth, pocket the blank, and produce the one given to them by the clan. They place the clan's choice in the ballot box, and return to the clan for their money. The blank ballot is then filled in and handed to the next voter and the cycle repeats.

Pretty ingenious really.

Oh right, so they go through the trouble of getting the first ballot and swapping each time just so they know the people they're paying aren't voting for someone else?

Yeah. And, apparently, some clans will also demand a photo as proof that the vote has been cast for their candidate.

Just finished episode 10 of season 1. Really good show so far although the second half of season 1 has been better than the first half, it's gotten all more gritty and dark since Genny's comeback. Fair to say if this was an American show it'd get way more buzz.

Finished the last 2 episodes of season 1. My god, that was a rollercoaster. Up there with my favorite shows, looking forward to season 2.

I watched the first season. It's good but I don't get the Wire comparisons. Both are very far apart IMO. It also think it has quite a bit of flaws.

Some spoiler related discussions for S1 - Please don't spoil S2 if you respond to this

- I find it very hard to root for Ciro, can't empathize with him at all. There is almost no, infact there is definitely no redeeming quality in him. This makes the whole drama just too dark IMO. I have seen S2 episode 1 and I think they made a mistake not showing his family much in S1. That could have humanized him a but more rather than him just being this evil force, killing people left and right for his own selfish gain.
- On the flip side, all 3 members of Savastano family are great characters. Imma was my fav. infact. All 3 have great storylines and I would have actually liked the season to be even more focused from their POV than Ciro's.
- S1 also suffers from lack of Police POV or one major police character. There is just so much killing and you needed a character to give perspective on Police's response to the same.
- The show overdoes the theme of innocent people getting corrupted by these mafia folks and then getting killed off quickly. It gets very predictable after third such instance. I hope they don't repeat this pattern in S2.

Overall, it was probably a bit too dark for my taste. I still enjoyed it and will watch S2.

BTW this has started to air in US on sundance so will probably take off now and get some buzz going.

Finished season 2. Really good show, really fecking good. When a large hit is going to happen the tension they build with the street scenes and the dark soundtrack is directing at its finest.
There are some things that bothered me though and I'll ask them in spoilers:

I might have missed things because of the English translation.

Just finished season 2

Absolutely amazing season, not as good as the first one for me, but nevertheless, one of the best shows I've ever watched. I consider it better than Breaking Bad and comparable to the Wire.

One thing I didn't like about this season is that the rise of Pietro was far-fetched. Not unrealistic, but everything this season went too perfect for him right until the end. I mean, for example, why did Scianel betray Ciro? He helped her against Conte, he gave her son the most lucrative drug spot even though the alley kids were far more deserving and he gave her and the rest equal powers to his. Yet they all went on to betray him for no apparent reason. You can say that it was greed and I get that, but it just seemed too implausible.

Anyway, Ciro is kind of fecked up right now. What's his point of living anymore, anyway? He lost his best friend, he lost his wife, he lost his daughter even. The guy got wrecked massively. At least Genny has a son and a wife now, this guy has absolutely nothing going for him. I don't know how he'll move forward to the new season, he is just too fecked up.

And the next season will be very interesting since there is no specific villain that has been shown. Pietro is dead and Ciro and Genny's rivalry can't continue anymore because Genny decided to bury the hatchet. I actually think they'll make some sort of an alliance now, but we'll see.

Anyway, despite some things I didn't like in this season, it was definitely an amazing season nevertheless.

I didnt get that too.

I didnt get that too.
I think because Ciro didn't allow Scianel to kill off the alley boys? Can't remember it anymore. But I do agree that Pietro's comeback was a bit far-fetched as in Ciro allowed far too much (or seemed incapable of tracking down Pietro's men).

I've almost finished season 2. One of the best TV shows out there for sure.

For people who are doubting this show: don't worry about the production values in this show, they are very good and better than lots of American shows. The direction is pretty slick too.

One of the better crime/dramas out there. However, season 1 was better than 2.

Anyone have any idea when S3 is due for release?
I saw on twitter recently that they were out filming in certain areas of Napoli and Bulgaria (where Ciro has fled to). Unfortunately, my Italian is almost nonexistent, so I can't tell you when it's out, though I saw '2017' a lot and no '2018'.
