Golf 2022

Because it has very little significance in comparison to the Majors. The Majors are all that matter in golf. The best players are hardly ever playing at the same time on the tour, diluting the quality and interest significantly.

The top level of professional golf should always have the best possible field at any given time but with the way it’s structured it protects old timers like a boys club, younger talents don’t get a look in unless they perform incredibly well on the Kornferry tour because you have so many players who are protected with various bullshit exemptions.
Agree somewhat with the first paragraph, not so much the second.

While the average quality of a ho-hum PGA Tour event does lack a bit in quality, it still is quite good & allows second tier players to accrue both FedEx & world international rankings points. This has been true for decades. Hell, Nicklaus in his pomp played around 20-25 tourneys a year including majors. Then you have the elite tourneys someone mentioned above. The Players is considered the best field in golf bar none.

The PGA Tour is probably replete with the best group of sub 30 y/o professionals ever. They make up both sponsored exemption players who took their chances very well, quality international players, & KF players (which is ridiculously good). It’s very similar to baseball in that regard, the majors with a quality AAA level.

The amount of money that must be flowing out behind the scenes to get these guys to flip must be eye watering. I don't get what the end game is though because I can't see how 2 competing tours can survive.

Disappointed about Ricky who is perhaps the BPITW to have never won a major (in the discussion definitely).

That cnut BDC can take his shit game elsewhere.

Has to be. $400 million was reportedly offered to Tiger for feck’s sake.

I said it above but I'll say it again. This really comes down to sponsors. If the PGA holds the line and keeps the sponsors in line (all the major golf brands, mecedes, etc.) then the new tour becomes a massive negative cash flow for the Saudi's. Similarly, if the networks in the USA stay in line there is no TV revenue stream. Unless the Saudi's are willing to burn a boatload of cash for years to try and wear the PGA down I just don't see how this works. Oh, and deliberately choosing to host an event at a Trump club, while it may appease the asshole, is not a good way to Sportswash yourself.

It'll come down to the players. They hold a lot of power here. I'd say the most likely outcome is the tours co-existing, who knows maybe even the PGA trying to get some of that saudi money.

Decnutbeau is a big name that might turn more heads, there’s no doubting that I’m afraid.

It's disappointing not him especially but the fact it will lead to more of the big names signing up as well

Expecting most Golfers to show some morals was always going to be a hard watch

Difficult to not like this kid…

I wonder if he wasnt as close with Tiger whether or not he would have different views. But JT always comes across well in interviews, and is by far and away my favourite golfer to watch.

It’s always good to see a redemption story.

Based on this ESPN article it appears that tomorrow is "line in the sand" day. If the PGA is serious it would appear that anyone who tee's off will be in line for punishment up to a lifetime ban from the PGA. If that happens, and the LVI folds, some guys are going to be fecked. Also, the majors seem to be be slow playing this but it would appear that the USGA might just let things play out and the Masters might just ban guys who don't qualify using the current system.

USGA came out & stated that anyone who qualified for the tourney in a week are in. Who knows about next year & beyond.

It will be interesting to see how world ranking points are distributed, if at all, for LIV events.

Who couldn’t have predicted Bryson going. Bloke so far up his own arse it’s not funny and generally not that good of a golfer.
Always find statements like this quite hilarious. That’s coming from someone who wishes he didn’t exist.

Had a look at his recent performances? Injury or not he’s been pants for nearly 18 months.
He’s literally in the top percentile of golfers to ever play. He’s more than good at golf.

I'm going to take a wild guess that @mariachi-19 was framing the statement in terms of professional golfers and not the world in general.

Why do the Saudis not go and buy sports journalists.

Has worked fantastically well for Abu Dhabi and City who have gotten glowing media coverage and sports washing from day 0

Agree with this, I’d expect it to happen soon.

I do wonder why the Saudi’s did it this way. The more strategic way would have been to hold all their tournaments on weekends without tour events, at least for the first year or two. While the PGA would still have likely pressured dudes to not join they could not have threatened bans and I think more guys would have played.

By forcing a choice, especially for the first event, they turned it adversarial and this is the result. The PGA has to ban guys today or they lose all leverage.

It's about to tee off. Why is it only 3 days? And since it is, why not make it Friday to Sunday?

Coral not taking bets on his, anyone else not taking bets?
