Glastonbury 2017

Because they're British. Also less contenders when you limit it to one country, which makes it an easier discussion.
My point was that whoever you crown as greatest British band will inevitably be the greatest band period.

That's probably true. I can't think of a better one anyway. If you include America, Velvet Underground were pretty special but don't have anything like the body of work. Then there's the Beach Boys, who confuse me, because I don't get them at all but loads of critics think they released the best album ever.

It's weird. When you actually try to list the bands that could plausibly be considered the greatest of all time... they're all British. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Radiohead etc

If you start talking about the greatest solo artists (Dylan, Michael Jackson, Elvis, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Johnny Cash, Prince etc) then they're almost all American, with the odd Brit (Bowie) thrown in.

Amazed at the praise. I thought Radiohead were shit.

Do you like Radiohead and thought this was a bad performance, or do you generally not like their music?

Not directing this solely at @Gambit but it's strange that so many people who clearly don't like/get Radiohead have felt the need to slate their Glastonbury performance. I won't be criticising Ed Sheeran on Sunday because I won't be watching. Why purposely watch something you know you don't like then moan about it? And why watch some band who's music you haven't followed for 20 years and moan that they are playing some songs you don't know?

They were outstanding

To be fair, I did the same with Kanye West.

I dont like them , so never watched them.
I watched Dizzy Rascal instead and enjoyed it, I dont see the point of sitting though something you dont like.
I will be watching Ed on Sunday because I like him.

Don't be silly
It's not that silly. They're definitely better musicians, have written a similar number of great albums, are similarly innovative, have taken just as many musical risks and have written a ridiculous amount of great music. It's not even that controversial an opinion.

It is silly really. Their musical achievements simply do not compare with The Beatles.

I love the one good Album Radiohead did. I like Radiohead I saw them in 98 and thought they were superb. Last night meh. Turned them off for a bit went back in and still thought they were meh.

Thats just insulting.

Nobody's ever going to achieve what The Beatles achieved but much of that is down to historical context. Taken purely on musical merit, I think Radiohead have made a lot of music that's as good as anything by The Beatles.

In my opinion so have a lot of artists. Using objective measures like record sales, musical and cultural influence Radiohead are a long way behind The Beatles, however.

Not a Radiohead fan so Lorde has been the best act for me so far. Thought she did very well.

Gonna catch up on Kris Kristofferson's set now. Hoping for a good show.

Yeah I was impressed too, I don't know much of her music other than the famous one. Reminded me of Florence and the Machine a bit.

I like Radiohead. I have the Bends and OK computer in my collection but I don't get the almost religious style fervour people have for them. I stopped watching as it was so fecking dirgy last night. Hopefully The second half improved, if it did and they were as good as people say I'll do a catch up today.

Don't take it personally, you literally had nothing to do with it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion when it comes to music, but I will say your standards must be ridiculously high to hold that view.

Do the Radiohead fans in here genuinely love all of the new stuff? I consider myself a fan, but there's always 4-5 songs on the setlist that would bore me to death. Usually the newer, more electronic stuff. Huge part of what made last night's performance so great was having so many of their big hits on the same setlist (something they don't do very often).

No I really really do like Radiohead and I was doing some bantering then for the fun of it but I do find you have to be in the mood for it with Radiohead. Now and please please don't think I'm saying the Beatles are better than Radiohead ( I've had to deal with to many Baby Boomers who as far as they are concerned the Music died when they split) I actually prefer Radiohead but unlike the Beatles there's something for you no matter your mood. Radiohead I have to be in a specific mood or stoned to really enjoy them.

Record sales don't denote the best of anything though do they? I mean...Ed Sheeran?
Can't really disagree with the other 2 points although they're less quantifiable, and you could argue that The Beatles genius was in popularising the niche. That and their genius in the studio considering the constraints of the times. Still, I think, as a band and as a collection of work, Radiohead and their albums stand aside anything The Beatles did. I understand that this is just an opinion though.

Record sales mean something of crucial importance. They mean, in general terms, that the music resonates with a lot of people. It is arguably the most important factor when considering an artist's greatness. If greatness was defined by middle aged sandle wearing Guardian readers then surely Radiohead would be the greatest band of all time, alas, the net must cast wider than that.

I was more referring to your opinion that Radiohead have had only one good album, I do agree that Radiohead are acquired taste however, and I definitely do listen to them more often when I'm in certain moods.

By that logic you could consider Michael Bay one of the greatest directors of all time given that the Transformer films have "resonated" with such a large audience. In reality that's more of a reflection on the commerce of filmaking than any sense of artistic merit.

I said arguably and you have made an argument against it.

The Beatles
Elvis
Michael Jackson
Madonna
Elton John
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Rhianna
Mariah Carey
Celine Dion

The top 10 selling artists of all time. Some are arguably manufactured and part of a commercial machine whilst just as many are not. It is simple to eliminate those manufactured artists and get back to considering my original point.

Is there anyway I can watch this outside the U.K.? Love the festival but have had no idea how to watch it ever since I left.

Jimi Hendrix.

America had all the Blues masters, and all the college rock bands, culminating in a few really great bands (REM, Nirvana, Pixies, Sonic Youth etc), but I think The Velvet Underground have aged better than any American rock band.

They almost feel more like a British band to me, same with Nirvana, and to a degree the Pixies, both of whom really blew up in England before America really 'got it' (same with Hendrix).

Watching Radiohead's set, now. Thom can't sing half the songs, these days. I'm still loving it, as I'm a huge fan but if you tried to tell someone who'd never come across them before, that this was one of the best bands of all time, whilst they were watching this, you'd look a bit odd.

You do realise Craig David is currently spitting fire on the main stage, right?

Does Thom smoke? Might explain the decline in his vocal range.

Just seen the radiohead set, I'm biased because for me they're the best since The Beatles, astonishing performance for me.
