Gill Expects Busy Summer

i think fergei told the glazers years ago that summer of 2011 or 2012 he might need to spend more than ever...this is the time now...

Kuszczak and Brown will leave, some of Gibson, Macheda, Berbatov might be on their way out. I am actually quite convinced Berba is going to leave and he will fetch around £10m. We might well end up with £20m earned there.

I reckon we'd get more than £10m for Berba. I'd like to think maybe £15m. He's had a great season and has proven he can score at the highest level. It would have been a lower figure based on previous seasons however

i hope the word busy doesn't mean we have a massive clear-out and not many being brought in, that be crazy....

It will be busy on both sides

I'm sure SAF will want all business tied up in the next few weeks.

Now that Scholes has retired I can finally see us bringing in a midfielder, unless Cleverley is to be given a chance.

No backtracking. Money will be spent and more than your projected 20 million net.

Cleverly is will be given the chance im sure, on the left. So we do need to reinforce in the middle either way

More info RD, tell them who you WANT.

This is where I have a problem, I don't really know who I want, I am not overl sold on all the players that may be available or within our reach. I can't make up my mind, only player I really wanted was Neuer, that is not what the coaches wanted.
yoof a chance is my default stand

I am not backtracking at all, I still don't expect us to spend heavily.

I will be disappointed if Fergie isn't given a budget of £80m net spend should he require it considering that we have spent sweet FA recently and sold our best player.

He'll spend what he needs to spend and no more.

Building a squad is like building a wardrobe. It's about buying quality and style that will last for the best price possible, it's not about buying designer names that cost half the budget and will probably shrink in the wash.

Why do some believe Brown will leave? He is a useful squad player, still in good shape.

Yes, remember the OP with quotes from Gill saying we're going to sign players?

Just feel there maybe frustration in the transfer market and the usual quote from SAF saying he his happy with the current squad ect ect.

If we really have money to try to spunk, go for bale and/or wilshere etc.

Otherwise the priority should be GK and then two CMs

Remember when we had 20 year old Beckham, Scholes and Neville ready to step up?

Yeah but at the time few thought "That's okay, we have a 20 year old Beckham, Scholes and Neville ready to step up?'

A lot of people thought:

'What the feck?'

I have the feeling that if we sign someone this summer, we ll get a surprise press conference and all the signings will be announced together - similar to what happened when Nani and Anderson were signed.

or else..

the usual "no value" statement from Fergie

You're right. Nothing has changed since then. Now we've got Bebe, Gibson and Obertan.

We also had Cantona to inspire the guys on the field. Most of them also had premier league experience before that. Neither Pogba nor morrison or even petrucci for that matter have that. Plus the League isn't the same.

We're buying, without doubt!. Who we're buying is another matter altogether mind you. I'm not getting into muppetry.

Fergie gets too much criticism for the 'no value' thing. He was right, largely. We don't know the ins and outs of transfer dealings. I heard stories of players, clubs and agents, ridiculously hyping transfer fee and wage demands because it was Manchester United and they felt that they could 'afford' to pay more. Sir Alex has always said that United have to expect to pay over and above everyone else anyway, simply because people think they can try it on with us, and milk more out of the deal. With City and Madrid spending like mad, I cannot see that helped the situation.

It won't be much different, if at all, this summer, but there's a greater requirement to spend now. Last time the boss was happy with what he had and he won the league and got to the CL final, few could argue with that synopsis. However this year we've had three players retire now and perhaps it'll be time to take a knock on the 'value' front.

But even so it is obscene how people bash Fergie around the head and mock him for the 'value' thing, as he was entirely correct.

Good post!

Good post, the only area of the pitch where we have definitely needed improvement for years is midfield but there haven't really been many midfielders going around at reasonable prices which dictated our approach for that matter. We need a midfielder that will improve us, not someone that will just be there to bulk up the numbers, I won't be surprised at all if we pull out this season as well if the likes of Modric and Sneijder will be priced at insane levels.

Remember when Hughes, Ince and Kanchelskis all left and we signed nobody?

Yes and that was just after we surrenderd the League title to Blackburn

SAF is always one step ahead of others, he knew then that the time was right for his fledglings to blossom.
