So much this, without the new handball rule VAR would have looked at this goal and gone, yep. 100% legitimate.

With the new handball law VAR looks at the replay and the law is pretty clear. Did it hit an arm or hand? Yes? No goal.

I think 80% of the salty tears in this thread could be moved down to the new handball rule thread.

There's evidence to suggest those changes may or may not happen. Disliking something purely because of what may happen makes little sense to me. Especially when it's clear that football seems to be taking it's own approach to things.

It's not more likely, it's a definite that it will expand to many aspects of the game. That's what the majority on here want though. I would really like to know the demographics in here of those who support VAR so much. Just a simple match goer or not. Over 40 or not. American or not.

Non-calls weren’t reviewable under last year’s rules either.

I’ve given about 25 different angles to my opinion. The rebuttal is always the same: the rules are the rules. To which my response has consistently been: grow a pair or a brain.

Correct. I don’t think I said it was. I said IR doesn’t improve my enjoyment of the game. I also said that it’s been in use a long time in the NFL and it still sucks—started in 1986 I believe. So, if you think VAR is going to be great in a couple years, then good luck to you.

In the original posts about that incident I responded to, there was sarcasm about instant replay helping the Saints avoid a poor call, as if IR failed them... it didn’t. The rules failed them. An instance of barking up the wrong tree.

I'm in favour of more fairness, but I was on the fence about VAR as I didn't think it would be used in the right manner. In fact, I'm not sure it's possible for it to be used to achieve total fairness.

A fallacy we have encountered in recent times is more sc technological = more accurate, when this isn't always the case. I think the same is happening with VAR which may be why quite a few are advocating for it, some without even really knowing how exactly it works or how exactly it will be implemented.

I will accept the occasional dubious decision via VAR if it cuts out decisions that really should’ve never been.

Nothing is perfect and we should accept that. I for one am with VAR right upto the moment it first pulls Smalling over for pulling in the area......
 
I’d prefer if there was just goal line technology and leave the rest to the play out naturally.
But I know time will breed familiarity and it will just become 2nd nature I’m sure.

Well yes because refs have a certain level of discretion when it comes to pulling in the box they always have. That sort of challenge happens in every game. If they were to over rule the ref on that kind of decision then every game would have a pen for pulling in the box.

This is one of those common sense calls that you guys like to claim. Hopefully they will change the rules to be more clear about puing in the box.

VAR can't check if the goalie is off his line. The goal was ruled out for the player encroaching into the area before the penalty was taken. So he had an advantage to clear the ball before any player.
 
Ita all very well saying its the rules not VAR, but it was VAR that lead to these rules, or at least the silly pedantic enforcing of them.

I said it before, but in the search to get 100% correct decisions the game has become too sterile. It was better at 95% correct decisions. Mistakes even themselves out generally anyway.

It wouldn’t happen every game because players would stop cheating if they were actually penalised for it.

I literally don’t understand how people fail to comprehend that VAR did its job yesterday and that there was nothing wrong with VAR. The only thing, potentially, wrong yesterday is the rule. It’s baffling how people are incapable of understanding that.

What is the big problem in that incident with the rule? The ball deflected off his arm to a teammate who scored - it shouldn’t count.

Yeah I agree, however, my main issue with VAR is that sometimes with a million replays it’s still subjective for a lot of decisions. Supporters will have to accept that it’s still down to a referees opinion, as it’s not tennis where a ball is in or out. Obviously they are looking at clearing up the rules, but it’s very hard to make things black and white.
 
I was actually warming to VAR after the World Cup and CL, but the early signs of seeing it every game are not good, it just looks like it's going to such the joy out of the premiership.

We are in a period of adjustment. It will all be fine soon we just have to go through this period of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Evolution is a bitch and some dna is a bit stubborn.

Just like football has always been. VAR tries to correct certain mistake but it will never ever correct everything without any reasonable doubt.
 
Looked a straight forward decision.

Wouldn't be surprised if the ref suspected handball from his position as the player missed the ball with his head and pushed the ball on with his arm inadvertently.

Thought City should've had a penalty with the holding in the box earlier. He had both arms wrapped around and pulled him down. We saw in the world cup the holding wasn't clamped down on.
Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.

It wasn't a clear goal scoring opportunity though. Not sure if there's more rules regarding this so we'll see how it's implemented. I fear for Smalling and his rep.
 
2 games into the season and people want to abandon it. How do you make any progress with anything if you want to quit something before even trying it.
