VAR - Love or Hate?

It's fecking dreadful, with or without VAR he would have got away with it because the ref didn't see it but knowing that some cnut who is supposed to know what he is doing has watched that and thought it's fine is so much more annoying than the on-pitch referee not seeing it. It's arguably meaning there are more wrong decisions as referee's are guessing or not giving stuff presuming they will be bailed out but then the bar for "clear and obvious" is so nebulous and seemingly so high that they aren't being rectified. The only thing it's adding is giving pedantic offsides that nobody gives a shit about.

There is just no logic to how it is applied. The VAR team will happily spend 5 minutes using all sorts of image techniques to prove someone was marginally offside, but then ignore challenges like Romeu on Greenwood.

At the very least there needs to be some communication as to how it is decided what is looked at, and what is not looked at. Currently it is a complete mess.

How are we meant to trust referees without VAR when they are this shocking with perfect camera angles to look at?
To be fair that could be easily missed in real time. With fifty million replays it’s a bit harder to miss. I wish they’d explain their reasoning. Probably just come out and say whoops sorry we got it wrong again

Anyway, EPL has by far the worst implementation of VAR I have seen. It is like the VAR is there to validate referee's decisions rather than help the referee to make the correct decision. And with referees being buddies to each other, they seem to rarely overrule each other.

Just do it like the rest of the world, when for pens and red cards, the referee checks himself. For offsides, the VAR referee can check. Much cleaner and then the refs won't have their ego hurt cause they would overrule themselves.

But if the ref in the room saw thst in real time with worse angles at a faster pace, logic dictates he wouldn't send him off then neither.
I simply dont understand how a ref sees that and doesnt give it. Theres literally no excuse for it

This is why VAR will never work as you will always have partisanship , like with Tiss thinking it’s not a red. Fans/managers will still keep thinking their being screwed over

Ah yeah I see what you mean. That’s why I’d like to see the decisions explained after the match. I don’t know wtf they’d say about that

I think the point is, it's the same refs who are officiating VAR as the ones on the pitch. They've got the benefit of all the angles, yet that doesn't stop them being incompetent. How can anyone trust them in real time?

I'd start with disbanding the referee's association. If you've seen the sky episode of Neville and Carragher going to visit them, it sounded like a massive cult/old boys club - and the referees weren't really being held accountable for poor officiating.

Get rid of it. Every single game there's an incident involving VAR which is constantly more talked about then the actual 90 minutes of football.

Until they get it right, there's no point using it for one decision and then not using it for another even though it's the same that was given a red card a week ago.

That challenge on Greenwood was legit dangerous, I don't know how the VAR can ignore that.

To me, if Nketiah's challenge was a red card, then Romeu's has to be. At least Nketiah made an honest attempt to win the ball. Romeu has just left his foot in, studs first, with the only intention being to leave one on Greenwood.

If the video referees are too scared to contradict their on field colleagues then we need to have the screens at pitchside, like in the Champions League. There's no way the referee could look at Romeu lifting his trailing leg to stud Mason and not see it as a red card. Disgraceful.

Yeah the PL implementation has its own pros on paper but for reds and penalties they should do like the CL. Makes me wonder if they have an end of season performance review.

Agreed. If Nketiah is sent off for dangerous play that wasn’t intended then Romeu has done far worse here.

I think we should have an official explanation for every VAR decision. Every check that’s done they have to explain why they arrived at the conclusion they did. I’d like that.

I don't understand why VAR sometimes lets the referee rule on these matter via his monitor, but on other occasions, they just get to make final decison themselves. Even if they didn't think that was a red, surely they must agree that it was contentious enough for the ref to look at it. I was a supporter of VAR when it came in but the lack of transparency around almost every aspect of it is unacceptable.

Shocking challenge. Could have ended Greenwoods career there and then. Le Tissier claiming it wasnt a red...dick

How do VAR refs look at that challenge and not see a red card? I don’t get it.

Whats the point? Complete joke.

Deliberate stamp on a player's ankle, reviewed by VAR with one job - refer it to the referee and they couldn't even manage that.

Mike Riley should be sacked in disgrace.

I’m not being funny but is sticking your arm out to stop the through ball as the last man not a red card? Rashford was 1v1 with the keeper of that doesn’t get stopped by his arm.

Would love to know the reason Romeu's stamp was ignored.

VAR is a good system, but the way it's been implemented in the PL is fecking shocking. PL refs must have personal minders or something. I don't think they could bathe themselves without choking on a bar of soap.

A lot more clarity needed overall.
That was a clear as day red card, just inexplicable how it’s not even a yellow in retrospect.
When I stopped playing footy I was a ref for a year and although I was only Sunday league ref and it’s not remotely comparable I did attend some functions etc and (probably understandably) there was a big feeling I had of us vs them.
Refs will look after their own..........

Easy solution, have a separate group of VAR officials that won’t protect their mates

What would it have taken for the ref to send him off,Mason having his leg broken I presume.

I like the NRL version. Ref makes a decision when they refer to VAR and then there as to be clear evidence to overrule the original call.

In theory, VAR/instant replay is supposed to remove the controversy when in reality it is there for the networks to build the drama. Have we really reduced the controversial calls? fecking hate this shit cuz it gives refs, like the one today, an out for either their incompetence or cowardice. feck it, I‘ll let them make the call...??? Did he really miss that? Players make mistakes, managers make mistakes, refs make mistakes. Live with it.

It's not like the ref didnt see Mason going down but in fairness he may not have seen the challenge in real time which is where VAR needs to step in.

The point of making it a red is to deter those tackles, not when it is a broken leg.
