FDP keeps getting further out with every update. BSW still capable of making it according to ZDF… Union under 30 and AFD over 20%.

Both FDP and BSW are out in ARD’s latest (haven’t seen an update for over an hour now)

Edit: Tagesthemen shares ARD’s latest now. FDP even lower (4,6) and BSW still raus (4,9).

This was the CDU's second worst result of all time I think

The alternatives were all part of a failing government. They were the only viable opposition. I personally believe they should have done much better, considering the general resentment towards the SPD, Greens and FDP coalition.
Understood, thanks for the insight. So they've capitalised on a failed coalition while the AFD have siphoned off the far right types.

Multiple factors. But I’d like to start with pointing out that BSW isn’t socially conservative. They are flat out racist and xenophobic.

First of all, the east has only been a democracy for 35 years now. That’s not long. The people there often grew up with the west as their enemy. That resentment and a generally skeptical perspective on democracy itself still prevail in parts of eastern Germany.

Worth noting that East Germany itself only existed for 45 years. 35 is not so short in comparison...

At this point i'm hoping for BSW in because that would force Merz to get SPD and Greens on board, which is the sole somewhat progressive option left.

Don't know why but that made me laugh

Worth noting that Habeck (Greens) just stated something similar, even much more drastic than Merz.

If it happens that they need to form a coalition it could result in a big push for European independency on the US.

He also repeated the batshit insane drivel about leftwing loonies or antifa being the ones protesting in thousands against his cozying up to the fascists. It's going to be a long 2-4 years until the next election.

You seriously believe by replacing the FDP with the CDU anything will change?
That's just "ein weiter so wie bisher" and no fundamental change will happen.

And CDU/SPD will innovate things?
That’s the problem isn’t it? Germany needs change and both options are not likely to deliver on that if we look at the last 20 years.

if we get more status quo, I am convinced that the AfD will be part of the government in the near future.

I know absolutely jack shit about German politics, am I right to he encouraged by this?
That depends on who you are and what you like

It likely means more investment in both the military and modern technology/industries to become politically and economically indepented from Trump and his oligarchs.

It kinda existed until the 80s, did it not? May not ever had universial healthcare, but on most other fronts, it wasn't that much different from Europe, i don't think.

What happens in the US tends to carry over to Europe though, which is a bad sign in of itself.
I’d say that social democracy existed in the USA from 1932 (when FDR was elected) until 1968 (when the New Deal Coalition fell apart). The post-war economic consensus was gone by about 1979-1981, and was followed by neoliberalism, which has been the economic consensus in OECD nations ever since.

I’m one of those filthy commies who hates everything we’re seeing in the US and for that matter the UK.

So sounds at least somewhat encouraging.

Is that like the German equivalent of ITV?
No.

ZDF is the equivalent for the BBC.
And ARD is the equivalent for the BBC as well.

Historically that's caused by German federalism - the ARD is a cooperation of state TV channels, while ZDF is the only public channel directly for the whole republic. Why does it exist? Because of power struggles between state and federal governments (back in the days of our first chancellor Adenauer)

I'd say it depends on the time frame. AfD profited massively from the frustration of the poor and Merz is unlikely to improve their living situation. On top, he won't be able to see throuh a lot of his campaign promises. Partly because he has to make compromises with parties of a completely different ideology now but also because he made promises he could never see through. Like going back to nuclear power which would be economically disastrous or other laws that would either violate the constitution or European right. It didn't took Weidel a day to call him out on "election fraud" because he isn't ready for a coalition with the AfD and instead chooses to water done right policies by working together with left-leaning parties. If they aren't careful, the AfD will become even more popular in 4 years time and then their might be no government without AfD pariticipation.

I guess that makes sense. The USA is also a federal republic but doesn’t have a similar thing.

found this on twitter, not sure if it's true, but it's supposedly the youth vote separated by gender.
