Wenger would probably go down with seizures if he had to pay £20m for a young French midfielder, they've always been free.

That's a bit sad. Players retiring to a toy team or even second layer players going there for a last crack at stardom seems OK to me. Though I'm probably just being unfair and snobbish, given Ranieri's a decent manager and players like Abidal, Toulalan and Moutinho should be able to guide him.

Maybe a bit under Pogba at this point, but only down to Pogba's meteoric rise with Juve last season.

Hope Platini does something about Monaco and Psg, not sure how they have spent this summer but someone has to look into this.

I recall UEFA quickly jumping on us when we decided the re brand Carrington to AON.

Did they? I was away travelling when all that happened - what was their complaint?

Disappointing that he's moved to Monaco, though of course I've only seen him play in Rio's testimonial so I can only go on other people's judgement on how good he actually is.

It was said that UEFA would probe our deal and the on that City signed with Eithad Airways.

140m... feck sake

£140 million isn't that mental. Spurs have spent £100 million in the last two weeks, and that's from a club that traditionally doesn't spend big money. Expenditure like that will be commonplace in the next few years, you'd suspect.

Except Tottenham will sell Bale and their total Expenditure will be more or less even.

Spurs are getting £78m for Gareth Bale, it's entirely different. Their net spend is going to be around £20m, Monaco's is £120m, there is no comparison between the two.

They've already sold 20m in Caulker, Huddlestone, Dempsey and Parker, that's including Bale 98m sold. Net spend should be small.

I knew I was leaving myself open to that as Bale to Madrid is nailed on, but my point stands. If clubs want to make the step up from also-rans to challengers, they are going to have to spend that amount of money. It's simple as that really. We can moan about sugar-daddy clubs all we want, but agents and club/player greed are hiking prices up beyond recognition.

The fact that £30 million is thought of a "nothing" figure now and standard for a 'promising but not top-tier' player speaks volumes.

You're not wrong there, tbh, and it's only going to get bigger, might as well get on board with the modern prices.

I don't think your point does still stand, you've just made a different one. Yes, clubs need to spend more these days and as you note the difference between what you get for £30m now and what you would have five years ago is massive.

But £140m net spend in one season is still mad, and the Spurs comparison is invalid since they're going to break even once Bale goes.
