very interesting* polling from Germany here!

Comparing left-populism (Linke) with right-populism (AfD), and liberals (Grune) with leftists (Linke again).

So:
Populist left = anti-war, pro-refugee
Liberals** = pro-war, pro-refugee
Populist right = anti-war, anti-refugee

*very subjective, but at least @Sweet Square will read it!

**every thing including the left and right is liberalism

Whoa. Sure as hell hope the church did not or does not delete video evidence of the teacher allegedly striking a child, if true and it exists. There has to be something in this for the woman to attack the other woman, even if not over an incident with the child. May never know the truth. An interesting sidenote from the YouTube vid is the husband of the teacher responded to a yelp review of his business with capitalized buzzwords in a similar manner to Trump/right wing nutters.

Absolutely insane the amount of empty properties in china. 90 million properties.

There is enough empty property in China to house over 90m people, says Logan Wright, a Hong Kong-based director at Rhodium Group, a consultancy. To put that into perspective: there are 5 G7 countries — France, Germany, Italy, the UK and Canada — who could fit their entire populations into those empty Chinese apartments with room to spare.

Not to downplay it but capacity for 90m people =/= 90m properties.

Out of interest what is the homeless situation like in China?

Wasn't sure where to put this but the difference between this and how much Sarah Everard was in the news (even before an officer was arrested) is stark and all too predictable.

Absolutely no idea on that. Interesting point though. May do some googling.

Weird story, this. Has a bit of an Eric Ruldolph vibe with the boyfriend apparently taking to the backwoods. He won’t survive in a Florida swamp as long as Ruldolph survived in the western NC forest, that’s for sure.

I don't think he's nearly as prepared as Rudolph was to live there indefinitely. Maybe I'm wrong. Rumors have been flying in Western NC that Laundrie is there. https://abc11.com/brian-laundrie-gabby-petito-update-dog/11064024/

I was just talking about Rudolph today. Growing up, we would go to the mountains near the Nantahala River in the far western tip of NC. After Rudolph went into hiding in that area, we would joke about finding him in the woods when we went hiking. Then one year he was arrested maybe 15 miles away from where we stayed.

Nope, I think you are correct, it doesn’t seem that the two are very equatable. Rudolph was hardcore, Rudolph’s brother even more so especially when considering the table saw incident; Laundrie seems a pussy compared to them. It was just the apparent taking off to inhospitable nature by both that struck a chord with me.

The forest in western NC in the mountains is no joke. Rudolph did have assistance from the local populace, but he did have some quality survival skills to last five years in that part of the world with near constant policing for him.

It must be really annoying to be the great grand child of people who actually lived through slavery to see your words about trans gender people take up more pages and airtime than news that police dragged a paraplegic black man named Clifford from a car after he pleaded with them that he didn't have the use of his legs and couldn't comply with the "step out of the vehicle" commands from police.

Can you imagine if police dragged a paraplegic trans gender woman from a car. The police would be cancelled.

that's true. after this series of incidents, there are no more policemen :(

Abandoned children found living in Texas apartment with brother’s remains
Three siblings aged 15, 10 and seven discovered in Houston, telling police their brother had been dead a year

The skeletal remains of a child and three surviving siblings who appeared to have been abandoned were found inside an apartment in the Houston area.

The children’s mother and her boyfriend were located, questioned and released without charges being filed, police said on Monday.

The plight of the children came to light on Sunday afternoon when one of them, a 15-year-old, called the Harris county sheriff’s office and said his nine-year-old brother had been dead for a year and the body was inside the apartment, the office said in a statement.

Deputies found the teenager and two siblings aged 10 and seven living alone in the apartment, said the sheriff, Ed Gonzalez, adding that the other child’s skeletal remains were located.

“It appears that the remains had been there for an extended period of time,” Gonzalez told reporters. “And I emphasise extended.”

In tweets on Monday morning, Gonzalez said: “It is believed the parents have not lived in the unit for several months. The mother of the children and her boyfriend were located late last night … interviewed and released. [Child Protective Services] is assisting with the children. Our investigation remains ongoing. No charges have been filed.”

Gonzalez said the investigation was being conducted by sheriff’s office homicide, child abuse and crime scene units.

Speaking on Sunday, Gonzalez said the children had been “living in pretty deplorable conditions” which he said were “very disturbing”.

“We definitely want some answers for these children,” he said. “It appears that they were caring, basically fending for each other, which is very sad … I think the older sibling was basically doing the best he could to take care of the others.

“And again … it appears the skeletal remains have been there for an extended period of time. So just connecting all the dots at this point it seems that [the children] were in there while the body was deteriorating.”

The younger children appeared malnourished and had physical injuries, Gonzalez said. All three were taken to hospital to be assessed and treated.

Gonzalez said: “There appears to be some food, so we don’t know where they were getting that food or who was leaving it.”

He added: “The initial information that we’ve gotten leads us to believe that this isn’t just something that’s been unfolding over a period of months, but it’s been perhaps as long as the entire year or many, many months. So we’ll tighten up that timeline, but that’s why we need some answers. These kids deserve answers, and the public should never tolerate anything like this.”

In a statement on Monday, the Texas department of family and protective services said it was seeking emergency custody of the 15-year-old and his two siblings “to ensure the safety of the children”.

The agency also said: “Child Protective Services does have history with the family, but there was no active CPS investigation at the time the children were discovered alone in their apartment.”

Neighbours expressed shock and disbelief. One, Kayla Williams, told the Houston Chronicle she had two children but did not plan to tell them what happened.

“I don’t need to put this in their heads,” she said. “This is crazy.”

Germany Set To Legalize Marijuana Nationwide After Major Parties Reach Agreement

Party leaders in Germany’s incoming government coalition have reached an agreement to legalize marijuana nationwide.

The legalization legislation is expected to be introduced during the upcoming legislative session. It will also provide broader drug harm reduction services and restrict advertising of tobacco and alcohol, along with cannabis.

As it stands, personal possession of marijuana is decriminalized in Germany, and there is a medical cannabis program in place. But this forthcoming proposal would seek to establish a regulated market for adult-use marijuana.

The governing coalition—comprised of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens—said that it will be “introducing the controlled distribution of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes in licensed shops,” according to a translation of a multi-party working group report first noted by Funke Media and circulated by Der Spiegel.

The so-called “traffic light coalition” is making the case that regulating marijuana sales will help drive out the illicit market. That will be revisited four years post-implementation, when a review of the social impact of the reform will be required.

And while the lawmakers emphasized that the objective of the reform is not to boost tax revenue for the country, FDP said in its election manifesto that taxing cannabis like cigarettes could generate €1 billion annually.

The new report, which was agreed to by the coalition’s working group on health and care, also discusses how the legislation would promote harm reduction, in part by allowing drug-checking services where people could have illicit substances tested for contaminants and other harmful products.

There will also be provisions related to advertising, with the intent being to restrict the promotion of marijuana, tobacco and alcohol to deter youth use, Der Spiegel reported.

“We measure regulations again and again against new scientific findings and align measures for health protection,” the report states.

Bloomberg noted earlier this month that the parties were nearing a deal on the issue.

This reform has been a long time coming in Germany. It was 2017 when members of the Christian Democratic Union and its ally the Christian Social Union entered into talks with Free Democrats and Greens about advancing legalization.

Police unions in Germany have come out against plans to legalize marijuana.

Christ, ever since I became a dad these stories just kill me. And I can only read the fecking intro since it's behind a region wall.

Blegh.
A six-year-old boy had warned people “for well over a year” before his death that his father would kill him but “nobody listened”, a murder trial has heard.

Arthur Labinjo-Hughes died in June last year after suffering an “unsurvivable” head injury while solely in the care of his step-mother.

His father Thomas Hughes, 29, and step-mother Emma Tustin, 32, are on trial at Coventry crown court accused of murder – which they both deny.

Medical evidence shows Arthur would not have been able to inflict the injuries on himself, but Tustin maintains that she is innocent of murder.

The step-mother has pleaded guilty to two counts of child cruelty, specifically intimidation and assaults.

In her closing remarks on Monday, defence barrister Mary Prior QC said Tustin “let that little boy suffer and she accepts that, and she will pay a heavy price for that”.

Hughes regularly abused his son at their home in Solihull, she said, adding that Arthur – whose biological mother is in prison for murder – had also told people that his “dad was going to kill him”.

Since he was five-years-old, before his father and step-mother got together, Arthur had told relatives, his school, and his doctor that his father had been making death threats – Ms Prior told the court.

Arthur had warned a number of adults “for well over a year and nobody listened,” she added.

Ms Prior went on: “He was going to die and he was going to die because Thomas Hughes was in charge of Arthur’s life and Arthur’s life consisted of nothing other than misery.”

The court previously heard Hughes had made threats towards Arthur, such as to “put him six feet under”.

He had also sent Tustin messages such as “[the] kid’s getting ended when I get back”.

Although he was not present at the time of the injuries that led to his son’s death, Hughes is being accused of being equally culpable for having “encouraged” violence and been physically abusive himself.

In his closing speech, prosecuting barrister Jonas Hankin QC said Arthur was “persecuted” and “dehumanised” by Hughes and Tustin who then “murdered” him.

Also on Monday, it was revealed by Tustin’s cellmate Elaine Pritchard that Arthur had 137 bruises on his body at one point.

She told the jurors that she read about the injuries on Tustin’s paperwork inside the HMP Eastwood Park cell in November 2020 while Tustin was awaiting trial, before kicking her out of the shared room.

A heartbreaking recording has also emerged in court of Arthur crying while saying “no one loves me” and “no one is going to feed me”.

Jurors have been told that Tustin would send Hughes voice notes of Arthur crying whenever the boy’s father was not home, and that Hughes would reply with messages such as “dig Arthur’s grave”.

The pair deny a count of child cruelty relating to allegations such as that they had poisoned Arthur with salt in his drinks and food, and had made him stand for 12 to 14 hours a day in their hallway.

Recommended
Ms Prior said that Arthur had showed anxious and clingy behaviour, and suffered nightmares, after his mother Olivia Labinjo-Halcrow was imprisoned for 11 years for killing her boyfriend in 2019.

The barrister added that Hughes ignored advice from Arthur’s school and doctors to treat his son kindly and without harsh punishment, and that he also did not share this advice with his partner.

The court has heard that Arthur and his father were living at Tustin’s home for more than a year because they were there when the coronavirus lockdown was announced in March 2020.

The trial continues.

I saw that the Kazakh president asked Russia and the other Eurasian coalition members for military aid.

Of course there will be a violent crackdown on civilians by Kazakh and especially Russian soldiers. It'll be like Hungary in 1956 or Prague in 1968.

Putin can't have another neighbor looking for more independence while he's trying to annex all of Ukraine. Maybe it will require him to move some troops from the Ukrainian border to Kazakhstan and impact his potential invasion plans/saber-rattling?

From what I was reading, the long dictatorship of Nazarbayev and repression of dissidents means there are no national opposition figures who could unite the whole country in revolution against the government so there isn't much hope for any real change.
