Gears of War 2

This game is awesome. Am i right in thinking there are only 2 acts, and that act 1(4) is way longer than act 2 (5)? Or am i completely wrong?

Right. feck knows how far i am then. I've just got to the part with the queen, and am flying out of the palace. Any idea how far that is?

Just ordered this last night, loved the first game. Whats the consensus with this one? Ive heard its a bit short but has awesome set pieces?

The problem is the matchfixing system which takes too long to assign players to matches, despite this being currently the most active game on XBL. The problem was alot worse at release and to an extent has been resolved following a patch, but to many the problem still persists.

I'm on bt, and I didn't realise there was an inbuilt firewall within bt

As soon as I turned that off it's been working great...but it's misleading because I never had problems with any game with the bt firewall switched on, other than Gears 2.

Someone I read moaning also said something about ending up in 5 vs 1 matches or 5 vs 3 matches, etc. Was that patched?

The major moan I read was from a person who was going on about issues that Gears 1 had and then were fixed, and then the same issues appeared again in Gears 2.

Gears 2 made a lot of Top 10 lists this year. Based on its single player experience, it does qualify. It's a thrill ride, and tops Gears 1 in almost every way. However, in my opinion, its broken multiplayer makes it one of the most disappointing sequels ever. Despite its Top 10 status, the real story is much different. Players are leaving in frustration. It sank to #4 on Live activity (but bounced up thanks to the holiday). As of now, I only have one gamer on my friends list playing Gears 2 on a regular basis. Hell, the guy that created the Gears 2 official thread sold his copy.

I’m really not sure what Epic is doing with all their money. They certainly aren’t pouring that money into quality control and testing. They aren’t paying someone to figure out how to write good network code. They aren’t paying someone to release a patch to fix the numerous issues that plague Gears 2. They aren’t paying someone to communicate to the community why the game is suffering from its issues and WHY they never fixed the issues when they had over 2 years to do so.

Wow, what a mess of a game. It’s almost sad to see a developer with Epic’s history totally feck a game up. Worse, most of the problems in Gears 2 could have been prevented. Why? BECAUSE WE GEARS PLAYERS HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS FOR SEVERAL YEARS! Epic, a studio that prides itself on “listening to the fans and providing post-release support” did anything but in Gears 2.

Brief summary of the problems (skip if you are familiar with them):

1) Online glitches that were fixed in Gears 1… RETURN!

Epic released a patch for Gears 1 that solved numerous issues such as crab walking and map glitches (e.g. hiding behind the fence in Mansion). All these wonderful glitches make a return for Gears 2. HOW CAN YOU FIX A PROBLEM THEN RELEASE A SEQUEL THAT HAS THOSE VERY SAME PROBLEMS? This is just inexcusable. It’s lazy, sloppy work.

2) Games routinely start without 5-5… SOMETHING THEY FIXED IN GEARS 1!

Epic released a patch for Gears 1 that prevented games from starting with uneven teams. So, you would expect the same for Gears 2, right? WRONG! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a game that is 5-4, 5-3, or even 5-1. Did anyone think this through? Once the players are in the pregame lobby, NOBODY ELSE CAN JOIN YOUR GAME! IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE ON A TEAM THAT’S GOING TO BE DOMINATED 5-3, THEN YOU HAVE TO BOOT TO THE DASHBOARD AND LOAD THE GAME AGAIN!

3) Epic can’t even figure out host migration.

Halo 3? Check. Call of Duty 4? Check. Two huge blockbuster games that feature one simple thing to prevent each match from crashing down when the host quits: host migration. If the host quits during a game, everyone gets booted back to the lobby. If a game is becoming lopsided, you know there’s a very good chance the host will quit. Why does the host quit? Because…

4) Epic introduced a totally broken ranking system that encourages quitting.

Nobody knows how ranking works. I was a 2 bar dude. I go into a game and before the game starts, the host quits. I get booted back to the lobby and I’ve been promoted to 3 bars! The next game our team wins and I had a good k/d ratio of 11-5 (or something). I get demoted back to 2 bars! Is it K/d ratio? Is it wins? A combination? WHY NOT CREATE AN EXPLICIT AND TRANSPARENT RANKING SYSTEM? ALL EPIC IS DOING IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO QUIT!

I can’t believe how monumental a feck up Gears 2 has been. This was Microsoft’s AAA title for the holiday. For a lot of new 360 owners who got in this holiday, this will be the first game they play on their console. Is this really the way you want to introduce gamers to Microsoft first party games? With an incomplete, bug ridden game?

In my books, this is one of the most disappointing sequels ever… WAY beyond Halo 2. At least Halo 2 had a flawless multiplayer experience. Its story was short, sure. But the replayability was there. Bungie took the time to make sure that happened. Bungie would NEVER release a game as flawed and broken as Gears 2. Infinity Ward would never release a game in such a poor state.

Epic: you’ve become a piss poor developer whose success has gone to your head. Achievement unlocked: becoming fat, lazy, and happy with mediocrity.

Personally I havent had the unbalanced match fixing issues, but yet again I havent played much multiplayer with the exception of the cooperative modes. From what I gather the only problem that really seems to have persisted post-patch is the excessive waiting periods prior to entering a competitive game.
