Gareth Bale

The 'jinx' thing refers to winning (and not just drawing) league games ... he's appeared plenty of times in cup match wins.

The jinx thing is a genuine laugh, I'll admit that .. but I think it's nothing more than an unforunate co-incidence. For me he's a classy 19 year-old LB who has a very bright future ahead of him.

Yeah it is.

I listened to the starting line ups on 5 live and thought "that's them fecked then"

He must be crying himself to sleep these days

I remember we were interested in signing him, but later, advised his parents that Spurs was a better outfit for him to join.... something on those lines.

The curse of Tottenham's Gareth Bale

As Tottenham look to end a four match run in the league without victory when they face Portsmouth at White Hart Lane this weekend, there is one obvious solution presented to Harry Redknapp - don't pick Gareth Bale.

The talented Welsh international is fast becoming something of a jonah for the club, an unlucky charm that threatens to anchor the club to the depths of the Premier League.

On 20 occasions over this season and last, Bale has started a league match for Tottenham; not once has he ended on the winning side.

Eight appearances last term garnered four draws and four defeats before injury curtailed his season. This season has been no better.

As Redknapp took over the ruins of Juande Ramos' kamikaze start to the present campaign, it was with Bale suspended after a sending off against Stoke City.

The rejuvenating effect of Redknapp's arrival saw Tottenham win five and draw one of their first six matches in all competitions - Bale appearing in the 4-4 epic against Arsenal his only league success of note.

Their first league defeat under Redknapp, at Fulham, saw Bale play a full 90 minutes.

With Redknapp's honeymoon now well and truly over and Tottenham back in the bottom three after a run of matches that have seen them lose to Newcastle, West Brom and Wigan and draw with Manchester United and Fulham, the curse of Bale continues.

Bought for an initial fee of £5 million from Southampton in the summer of 2007, Bale showed early promise in the opening part of the season - though never tasted victory in the league - before being injured in a tackle with Birmingham's Fabrice Muamba at the start of December, never to kick a ball in anger for the rest of the season.

Undeterred, Tottenham handed him a new improved four-year contract, unaware that his winless streak would continue.

If Redknapp ignores all evidence to the contrary and selects him to face Portsmouth at the weekend, a peculiar and unwanted record is within the Welshman's grasp.

Failure to win would see Bale equal the record for Premier League winless streaks for individuals, set last season by another bright prospect, Giles Barnes of Derby.

For the good of the team, and Bale's confidence, perhaps it would be better if he was given the day off instead.

Winless wonders:

Name Team Games Period
Giles Barnes Derby 21 2007-08
Gareth Bale Tottenham 20 2007-present
Emanuel Villa Derby 16 2007-08
David Jones Derby 14 2007-08
Willo Flood Man City 14 2004-06

Ah, fair enough then, thought it was too good to be true.

2149: Into injury time at White Hart Lane and still no sign of Gareth Bale from the bench, with Spurs leading Stoke 3-1.
