I agree, I said before we don't need strengthening in the wide areas. Valencia and Nani are going to be our main wingers with Park being utilized for specific opposition. Giggs can do a job when needed, and hopefully Obertan can add a different dimension when called upon.

* FULL FITNESS: Gabriel Obertan

Gabriel Obertan is going green in a bid to become a regular Red. Manchestert United’s £3m summer 2009 buy from Bordeaux isn’t taking the environmentally friendly route to establish himself at Old Trafford – he’s eating more vegetables!

The 21-year-old French winger is devouring his legumes and working out to put some muscle in his quest to make his Old Trafford breakthrough.

Just 12 months ago, Obertan was the unknown purchase in Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer package.

But a back injury hindered his progress and he ended up with just five starts and eight first team sub appearances on his CV. Now he’s ready to make a fight of it.

“I was quite pleased with my first season in the end. I started some games and came on as a substitute as well in a few matches,” says Gabby.

“But the difficult thing for me was that I arrived at the club with an injury. I had the back problem so was out really for five months.

“That is not an ideal situation when you come to a new club. I was just waiting and watching other players get their chances.

“I don’t have any problems with the back now so it is an important season for me. I want to really prove I can be a part of this team. I want to play as much as possible.

“I have had a pre-season behind me unlike last summer and I feel right now. I feel I am ready for this challenge ahead of me.

“The second season is always when you really have to prove what you can do. I have shown a little bit in games but I don’t think it is anywhere near enough. I aim to prove myself now this campaign.

Obertan efficiency

“I have to be more efficient in the last third. The gaffer has spoken to me about that. I know what my weakness is and I have to work on it. It is all about the accuracy of my service. I need to get my season started now.”

Obertan believes he can now cope with the extra physical game this side of the Channel.

“The English game is so much more physical and quicker. I was used to having time on the ball in France,” he added.

“I have become bigger physically in order to cope with it. I have been working out. I felt I needed to be stronger to face up to the contact.

“Gym work and the way I eat has given me better body strength. The nutritionist and the work in the gym has really helped me.

“I eat even more pasta now than ever. I never used to be fond of vegetables but now I eat a lot of them. I needed to eat more greens.

“It has helped put on extra muscle. We do a fat count and that hasn’t gone up but I am bigger so it must be all muscle I’ve added.

“I did boxing work and speed work in the gym as well. It has all made me better equipped to push myself forward at United.

“There are lot of players at the club and new players have arrived this summer.

“But the competition isn’t a problem for me. I will work harder and harder to make sure I am on the pitch.

“When the coach is ready to use me I will be ready.”

OBERTAN was speaking at the launch of a new soccer website Football4Football.com

Dean Gorre, the former Feyenoord, Ajax, Huddersfield and Barnsley player has launched the revolutionary site which gives information on every aspect of the game, including tips on nutrition, injuries, development and skills.

Showing a great attitude in his interviews, quite excited about him to be honest, I think he has the XFactor which we sometimes lacked last season.

He needs to work on his use of the ball, be an bit economic about it and everything will just flow into rhythm. It is all tactical with him, could benefit from watching Thomas Muller in action.

dont know why but i think bebe's most direct competitor at united is obertan

He looked very strong and muscular in the pre season. Good to see him working so hard

He seems to have the right attiitude. He's got a lot of improving to do though.

Yup great attitude and he has even accepted that he needs to improve alot with his final ball..

More like Ozil.

Great to hear. The one thing he has over Tosic is his potential to fill out his frame. Tosic was a shrimp, and that really hinders you in a rough and tumble league, but with Obertan working hard on bulking up I think he could really take that next step up in the next season or two.

Same is true of Welbeck as well. He's got the same problem of dawdling on the ball too long and losing the advantage. That's something I was very impressed with watching the German team. All their players are sharp on the ball. They may not play the perfect ball, but they don't wait 5 seconds longer then they have to. Ball movement is very efficient and well thought out (which makes sense given they are German).

So could a lot of players, he's fantastic

But it would be madness to expect every young player to be that mature at such a young age. Muller is mature like Fabregas was at the same age, it doesn't happen often. Maybe he doesn't have the raw ability that some players possess but in terms of intelligence and movement and even bottle, he has it over almost every player of his age.

He seems to flick rapidly between shit-hot and just plain old shit whenever i see him play; i really can't figure him out.

I've never seen him look shit-hot....

Mediocre squad player, but will make a good backup winger for us so that Valencia/Nani can rest against the lower teams.

Nani who was a better player than him at the same age needs time and patience as well, and it finally took him 3 seasons to get it going. Give Obertan time.

I thought his debut showed a lot of potential. Sad that he no impact on our season after. I think the kid's got talent. Once he gets used to the physical side of the league and improves his decision making, he could be a very good player.

Decided to give it a bump as it should be the due time for Obertan to get fit again from his Injury over at the states ?

Is this lad training again ? Here's hoping Obertan can somewhat breakthrough an integrate into our squad and be more involved this season.

If he and Bebe make the first team we wouldn't qualify for membership in the Lollipop Guild anymore. That would suck.

He tracks back, but maybe isn't defensively sound enough for SAF's liking to play when Scholes is playing. So once Carrick-Fletcher gets up and running I think Obertan should see some starts in the league over Park. Obertan, Valencia, Nani, and Hernandez for Carrick to pick out would lead to some fine attacking football.

Oh, I guess Hernandez would keep us eligible for the Lollipop Guild.

Hm. I actually like Obertan. Not overly excited about the boy, but he's a direct style winger. one who is more likely to cut in and shoot than cross the ball. however, his decision making has to improve.
I guess, not loaning him out means, that he'll start a bunch of early round CL and cup games.

I can only assume he means this:

Lollipop Guild

so, he means?:

If he and Bebe make the first team we wouldn't qualify for membership in the "San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus" anymore. That would suck.

Exactly. This really changes my mind on the topic. I would keep them from the first team to see that.

My bad. You don't remember these guys?

I assumed everyone had seen The Wizard of Oz and also long-since noted our purported less-than-average height vs. other teams in the league. Goals from corners, and all that.

Oh think i see; you're saying he's tall?

Less vague Wizard Of Oz and San Francisco Gay Men's Choir references, you massive airbender! Just say tall next time!

I don't think our team is shorter than the others?

Vidic, Rio, VDS, Smalling, Evans, OShea, Carrick, Berbatov are all pretty tall.

I think Arsenal have some shorter players - Clichy, Eboue, Denilson, Fabregas, Theo, Nasri, Vela, and ofcourse, Arshavin. Their centre backs and goalkeepers are also shorter than others in those positions.

oh ok . For a moment there, I felt like we now know you, only a bit too well ;-)

How are Ozil and Obertan at the same stage in their career? Ozil played in a world cup where was nominated for the golden ball. He's made over 100 appearances Bremen since signing with them two years ago. Obertan is considerably behind him in pretty much all aspects of their "stages of their career".

Why would you compare him to Iniesta either?

Thats like me saying Obertan is skillful, but not as skillful as Ronaldo

I think a big thing in the argument is that Obertan had a major injury early in his career which was badly dealt with to the point we bought him for a knockdown price because of it and then did the necessary which should have been done sooner and sent him for surgery to get his back sorted out.
Ozil didnt lose the best part of 2 seasons to either being out, playing with a major injury or recovering from it between the age of 19-21.

Dont take that as me saying the only reason he's not better than Ozil or something, just saying it should be considered in any comparison.

On squad average, we are the shortest in the league.
